Shania Twain is back with her sixth studio album, a somewhat safe but satisfactory reminder that she's one of a kind. Read our review.

The days of blazing trails are behind Shania Twain, and that’s perfectly all right. Shania Twain completely changed the game throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s. [Netflix](https://consequence.net/tag/netflix/) documentary Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl, the country-pop singer’s longtime manager Jon Landau recalls the first conversation he had with the then-rising artist.

ADRIAN THRILLS: Giddy up! Shania Twain gallops back to the top (Daily Mail)

ADRIAN THRILLS: Before Shania Twain started breaking sales records, the idea of a country-pop singer becoming a global superstar seemed far-fetched.

But despite the slings and arrows, her story is one of survival. My 21st Century Blues is the emotionally-charged album the 25-year-old says she has always wanted to make and it captures a fascinating talent. Frustrated that the label wouldn't let her release an album, she parted ways with them in 2021, and now releases music independently Formed with his musical (and romantic) partner Rose Elinor Dougall and pronounced 'the wave', the duo specialise in experimental, but tuneful, pop. Frustrated that the label wouldn't let her release an album, she parted ways with them in 2021, and now releases music independently. It's a theme echoed by the title track: 'I've got a life, and so many other amazing things to do.' Short of shouting 'Let's go girls!', as she did in 1997, she couldn't sound more upbeat. Queen of Me: The omens for the new album are better than before. The omens for new album Queen Of Me are better. There's also the lovely Last Day Of Summer, co-written with singer Jack Savoretti. With certified sales of more than 30 million, and claims that the true figure is closer to 40 million, Come On Over is not just the biggest country album ever — it's one of the biggest sellers across the board. At the end of the 1990s, Shania was impossible to avoid. She nearly lost her singing voice after damage to her vocal cords, linked to a diagnosis of Lyme disease.

I Feel Like a Woman.” The cheers of “Queen!” in the title track sound half-hearted at best, hitched to a plodding rhythm that proceeds with all the pizazz of a conveyor belt. She accomplished that with [Now](https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/shania-twain-now/), which drew more heavily on rock and Top 40 pop textures while keeping a relatively even keel. She’s still got some of that country flavor, but instead of a seamless crossover, it makes for an awkward combo. When she sings “you’ll always be the same old you/ but I’m a brand new me” on Brand New, you know she’s speaking from lived experience, while her indefatigable optimism recalls that of Dolly Parton, who has always known that you attract more bees with honey. These tribulations doubtless shaped her character, instilling the kind of resilience that was required to return to singing after losing her voice, and to bounce back after discovering that ex-husband Lange was having an affair with her best friend (two years later, Twain married her best friend’s husband). I Feel Like A Woman, You’re Still The One and From This Moment On, the album benefited from the Midas touch of Robert “Mutt” Lange, Twain’s then-husband and super-producer on some of the biggest albums of the era including AC/DC’s Back in Black.

Twain strays away from her country roots but already sounds a decade behind her peers, both in theme and sound.

You don’t have to listen too closely between the lines, however, to realise that there is also score-settling going on with Queen of Me. Despite her country roots, it would be inaccurate to classify the 57-year-old in that same genre these days. If you were to believe everything you read in the press release, you’d assume that Shania Twain’s latest album is entirely focused on self-empowerment.

But I go out there with the confidence that I’m the best I can be and that I’ve worked hard to be my best. I’m not the same body I used to be. I just am not afraid of the criticism. TWAIN: I may not have it forever. I wanted music that was going to make me want to dance. I wanted to be on a horse. One of the places I feel most liberated is riding a horse. It was the only way. It became the theme of the whole album.

Review: Shania Twain's 'Queen of Me' (Rolling Stone)

Shania Twain Feels Like A New Woman On 'Queen of Me'. The carefree feel of her Nineties dominance may be gone, but the country-pop legend still knows how to ...

“Got It Good” has a touch of the old maximalist Twain energy, but it’s underpinned by a sleek disco beat out of Kylie Minogue’s Fever era and ABBA-style vocal harmonies. It’s a grounding moment on the heels of a fortifying pep talk. “Giddy Up” has a touch of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” in its rhythmic swagger, “Waking Up Dreaming” wanders a bit too close to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” (and Toni Basil’s “ Mickey” by extension), and there’s a sense of allegiance to the moment when Swift’s 1989 and Dev Hynes’ assorted productions were everywhere, all soft synth pads and ghostly vocal samples. “You’re such a fuckin’ liar,” she sings, sweetness flecked with acid. In “Brand New,” she emerges from a relationship with a clean slate and fresh perspective. And though there are a few subtle nods to that imperial phase of her career, Queen of Me doesn’t concern itself too much with her former dominance.

Queen of Me review | Shania Twain reborn – whilst still reminding us ... (whynow)

Shania Twain, the best-selling female country artist ever, delivers Queen of Me, the follow-up to 2017's Now. Holly Smith reviews.

It’s about the excitement of a Shania reborn, or as she says on ‘Brand New’, “you’ll always be the same old you but I’m a brand new me”. Shania made her name as a crossover artist, and it’s fair to say that, at least on this album, she is standing quite firmly on one side of the pop-country line. When Shania stops singing midway through to say “get the lights”, you’ll find yourself instantly taken back to the “okay, so you’re a rocket scientist” of ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’. Though, of course, as Shania holds the record of being the best-selling female country artist of all time, it’s a matter of opinion on who inspired who. Despite some rather on-the-nose lyrics (“I’m not a girl, I’m not a boy, I’m not a baby, I’m not a toy, I’m a queen” on the album’s title track, for instance), it translates to an infectious euphoria that makes you want to cheer her on – and maybe even share this tape with your friends.
