"Until she is found the police will be working on this to help her family understand what's happened. "That is what would make it less likely to think it's a criminal act, there is not a lot of supporting evidence." She said: "You would have had to of taken her some distance to get her away from the scene. "And another is looking to see if a criminal act has taken place and involved a third party. "Another one is that she's a misadventure, like an accident, because she was so close to the river and fell in. "One is that is would have gone off of her own volition, but that is unlikely because she seemed happy at home.

Nicola Bulley: Missing mother fell in river, police believe (BBC News)

Detectives say they are not treating the disappearance of mother-of-two Nicola Bulley as suspicious.

Ms Riley said the dog was dry and that Ms Bulley could swim. "She puts her phone down to go and deal with the dog momentarily, and Nicola may have fallen in," she said. Supt Riley said an "issue" with Ms Bulley's dog may have led her to the water's edge. "We believe that Nicola was in the riverside area and remained at the riverside area," Supt Riley said. Lancashire Police said its "main working hypothesis" was that she fell into the River Wyre and this was "not suspicious but a tragic case of a missing person". Supt Sally Riley said the last confirmed sighting of Ms Bulley was at 09:10 GMT when she was seen on the upper field.

Ms Bulley's heartbroken family and friends had made desperate pleas for information during the week-long hunt after she vanished.

“It has made local women fearful,” she added. Superintendent Sally Riley urged against speculation, but said it was “possible” that an “issue” with Ms Bulley’s dog may have led her to the water’s edge. [CCTV](/topic/cctv) we have been able to negate that Nicola left ... Her father told the newspaper: “We just dread to think we will never see her again, if the worst came to the worst and she was never found, how will we deal with that for the rest of our lives.” Lancashire Police said they were working on the hypothesis that Ms Bulley may have fallen into the River Wyre. Her family released a statement saying they had been “overwhelmed by the support” in their community, and that her daughters were “desperate to have their mummy back home safe”. “There may have been an issue with the dog that led her to the water’s edge, she puts her phone down to go and deal with the dog momentarily, and Nicola may have fallen in,” she said. Ms Bulley’s parents, Ernest and Dot Bulley, spoke to The Mirror about the “horror” they faced over the possibility of never seeing her again. Police urged volunteers to exercise caution, describing the river and its banks as “extremely dangerous” and saying that activity in these areas presented “a genuine risk to the public”. She added that “the dog was dry” and Ms Bulley can swim. Supt Riley said that police believed she may have “momentarily” been dealing with an issue with her dog when she fell although the pet was not believed to have entered the water. Superintendent Sally Riley told a press conference on Friday that police were working on hypothesis that Ms Bulley had fallen into the river.
