Based on our first look at the CX-90, it appears promising and should prove to be more competitive in the North American market which is the primary domain for a larger utility like this. The same infotainment system found on other current Mazda models is retained with a 12.3-inch central display and the rotary controller on the center console. With a longitudinally mounted inline six up front, the CX-90 has revised proportions compared to the CX-9 with a longer hood and cab set back further on the chassis. Mazda isn’t yet saying how much electric range the CX-90 will have, but promises that it will be competitive with others in the class without identifying what that class is. Inside, the further step up in premium feel is immediately visible with the maple trim on the center console and doors and the fabric covering the dashboard. In addition to its dimensions, the CX-90 has a fundamentally different architecture. The standard configuration is a new 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system and eight-speed automatic transmission. I sat in the third row of the CX-90 and found that I had plenty of knee and head room and two adults (or three children) could sit comfortably back there. The first fruit of this effort is the new joint assembly plant in Alabama that produces the CX-50 and Toyota Corolla Cross. Remarkably, in 2022 when most other automakers struggled to minimize sales losses due to supply shortages, Mazda sold nearly 300,000 units in the US, more than it did in 2019 before the pandemic and had its highest market share in two decades. The latest step in that direction is the new CX-90 upper-midsize three-row crossover. That’s why it has partnered with Toyota with the Japanese behemoth taking a 20% stake in Mazda and the smaller firm taking 5% of Toyota.
The CX-90's new longitudinal platform, electrified powertrains, and gorgeous interior could help it give many luxury SUVs a run for their money.
We look forward to learning more about the CX-90 and, of course, getting behind the wheel, but early signs are promising for Mazda's new mindset. The CX-90's grille detailing is a bit different than on Mazda's current models, and its wheel designs (up to 21 inches on the top model) and chrome trim on the lower body further the luxurious vibe. in the spring of 2023, and top models may approach $60,000. [BMW X5](https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/x5) than [Toyota Highlander](https://www.caranddriver.com/toyota/highlander), and that's entirely the point of the CX-90. The dash-to-axle ratio—that is, the amount of bodywork between the front axle and the dashboard—is commonly viewed as a differentiating characteristic for luxury cars. The CX-90's third row is definitely more spacious than the CX-9's, but the floor is still high, meaning adult passengers riding back there will find their knees in their chests. It will go on sale in the U.S. Mazda has filled this spacious interior with luxury-grade materials, especially in the top-trim model we sat inside. It establishes a clear difference between this model—and the [two-row CX-70](https://www.caranddriver.com/mazda/cx-70) that will follow on this same platform—and Mazda's older SUVs. A new eight-speed automatic is standard with both powertrains and is unconventional in that it swaps out a torque converter for a multi-plate wet-clutch setup, an arrangement AMG also uses. This platform supports a new range of electrified powertrains, including a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six with 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque that also includes a 48-volt hybrid system. There's also a plug-in-hybrid setup that produces 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine and a 17.8-kWh battery pack.
It's got a longitudinal engine, rear-biased all-wheel drive, and an available turbo straight-six making 340 hp. Tell me that doesn't sound like a sport ...
It’s equipped with a mild hybrid setup Mazda calls M-Hybrid Boost that places an electric motor between the engine and transmission for better engine response. With 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, Mazda says the engine was specifically tuned for the U.S. In keeping with the brand’s Zoom Zoom heritage, Mazda designed an all-new platform for the CX-90 with a longitudinal engine and a rear-biased all-wheel drive layout. The base-model offers an e-Skyactiv 2.5-liter inline-four paired with a 17.8-kWh battery for plug-in capability. The CX-90 offers two all-new powertrain options: a plug-in hybrid and a high-power mild hybrid. Mazda designers say the curves of the body create changing expressions, meant to purposely reflect light and shadows so the car’s look changes throughout the day.

The CX-90 is fitted with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of safety and convenience features. The CX-90 will take the position as the top vehicle for the entire Mazda line, with the latest and greatest of all the brand has to offer. It uses a mild-hybrid system, with an electric motor placed between the engine and transmission that can power the CX-90 at low speeds. The exterior is smooth and tasteful, though understated. Shoppers would be smart to wait a model year or longer to give the company time to perfect its building processes and address any initial hiccups. Mazda crafted the CX-90 with its key brand elements: a “zoom-zoom” personality and premium cabin elements. The CX-9 has had a long run, being last redesigned for the 2016 model year. It’s an accomplished SUV in terms of ride and handling. The CX-90 is a big launch for the small brand, as it is more “new” than most vehicles. While it sounds promising, even enticing, it’s worth noting that such a fresh, from-the-ground-up design and powertrains tend to bring teething problems that could affect reliability. Such a setup is considered to optimize ride comfort and handling agility. Mazda has taken the wraps off its new flagship model, the three-row CX-90 SUV.

Mazda unveiled the new 2024 CX-90 crossover. It's a three-row flagship SUV offering both inline-six and plug-in hybrid engine options with more than 300 hp.
Mazda didn’t give any firm dates beyond that the CX-90 is a 2024 model-year vehicle. The CX-90 with more space and two more capable engines should command a fair premium above that. But Mazda describes it as the flagship, meaning it should be more expensive than the CX-9, which starts at $38,750 MSRP and ranges up to $48,460 for the signature model. Mazda also sells the CX-90 with a 2.5-liter inline-four plug-in hybrid. Mazda says it delivers 340 horsepower (+90 hp over the CX-9) and 369 lb-ft of torque (+49 lb-ft) when running on premium 93 octane fuel. On paper, it sounds like the Mazda everyone has been waiting for: [a CX-9](https://www.gearpatrol.com/cars/a523597/2019-mazda-cx-9-review/) with more space, power, and fuel economy.
