'Doing something Unholy': Sam Smith breaks records and barriers ... (ABC News)

Sam Smith became the first out non-binary artist to reach number one with their song Unholy. Now, their new album Gloria is set to storm up the charts.

"Expect Gloria to be a global, mainstream hit. I'd go in the studio, and writing about that felt easy," Sam said. And it's this feminine energy and voice that has always been in my music. "And so for me my challenge of this record … I think it's the voice of all the divas I've studied and loved in pop music. But life is just so much more messy than that." "It's absolutely fantastic … I wanted to write songs that had the felt joyful and felt strong, stronger in terms of the messaging and more confident." Unholy — a tale about a man who leaves his wife and kids at home to get up to "something unholy" — is notable not only because it's a banger, but for making Sam Smith the first out non-binary artist to reach number one in markets across the world. "I've got to allow myself a little bit of a pat on the back, because it's an incredible thing, you know, to have made that many people dance," Sam said about the success of the song. But Unholy has heralded a new era for the singer, not just comfortable in their own skin, but proud of their sexuality and gender (they came out as non-binary in 2019) and ready to party. And, to top it off, the singer visited Australia for a couple of weeks and got to pat a koala.

Sam Smith's "Gloria" Review: Queer Glory (Metro Weekly)

Sam Smith's strength as a crooner is once again on full display in their very personal new album, "Gloria."

While far from the strongest track on Gloria, “Unholy” is a satisfying middle finger not only to the church as an institution, but to the destructive unwritten rules and norms that can take a lifetime to unlearn. And yet it’s crucial we stay active and provide vital resources and information to both our local readers and the world. RuPaul’s Drag Race as a stand-in for LGBTQ identity is a convenient shorthand, but it feels a bit like an unnecessary guidepost, given the song’s strength as a sultry, openly sexual small-hours dance number. Smith has, after all, not made a secret of the fact that they are a queer ex-Catholic who has struggled with self-acceptance. Smith embraces and showcases that complexity on their most personal and up-front album yet, effectively saying to the world, this is what growing up can look like. In the past, uneven production and inconsistent songwriting have sometimes failed to match Smith’s vocal prowess.
