And that was pretty much that for Liverpool, who never really looked like winning this game in the second half. The main negative was a lack of any obvious understanding the rest of the time. Klopp will feel it was poor defending, poor cover, sleepiness in the centre. The main positive here for Liverpool was the odd flicker of synergy between the front three. He glides, he skates, he dusts the ground. The Amex Stadium was a grey chilly place at kick off, with a low nautical drizzle creeping in under its swooping plastic eaves. On the other hand, this does not look like a team poised to mount an irresistible surge. Brighton would go on to win the game, deservedly, with a brilliant goal a minute and half into stoppage time. There has been talk of tired players, of the shadows of last season’s ghost quadruple, of recruitment mistakes made, of Klopp losing his magic dust. Elliott made a wonderful run through the centre as Salah scurried down the right. At the final whistle Klopp hugged Roberto De Zerbi and hand-slapped the Brighton bench. It was beautifully taken by Karou Mitoma, a footballer who is basically made of feathers, dandelion spurs and some kind of super-light high-tensile alien metal.

In the league, we haven't been good enough and now we're out of both cups now. At the start of the year, we wanted a fresh start but that hasn't happened. At a club like Liverpool, fans expect a lot and to lose with the last kick of the ball it's disappointing.

Harvey Elliott has calmed any fears regarding a blow to the head that could have seen him join Liverpool's lengthy injury list.

I want to keep playing for Liverpool and contributing, helping us win games and getting us up the table. It’s just a bang on the head, so I should be over it in the next couple of days. That’s what I want to keep doing. There were concerns that the youngster could be joining the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on the treatment table, but the England Under 21 international insists that will not be the case. That would be the cherry on the cake for me. It’s a bit sore, but it’s nothing that’s going to stop me.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the club will not do any last-minute transfer deals in January, despite troubling results.

Such a clause underlines how deep the respect between Klopp and the club runs. Crucially, he also retains the full support of both the Anfield hierarchy and the fans and is focused on putting things right. The Reds chief was forced to scotch talk earlier in the season that he would walk away from Anfield after people noticed similarities between the Reds' current run and the circumstances surrounding his exits from previous clubs. You have to have wide shoulders and really just take it.

Pep Guardiola may just have settled Trent Alexander-Arnold and ... (Liverpool.com)

Pep Guardiola and Man City have just taken a huge transfer decision late in the January window, and the contrast for Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool is clear.

The bottom line is this — even when he's out of form, the Englishman isn't seen as expendable, whereas Cancelo evidently is. There's never really been any genuine prospect of Alexander-Arnold losing his place in the side. [Pep Guardiola](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/guardiola-klopp-man-city-liverpool-26086544) has preferred to use 18-year-old Rico Lewis and predominant center-backs Nathan Aké and John Stones in the full-back positions. This, indeed, is part of the reason why Alexander-Arnold has been criticized so widely this season. Guardiola's snubs are less puzzling with all this context applied. You can see here that Cancelo's creative numbers have fallen across the board, sharply in some areas. And that last stat is telling too. 2022/23 2021/22 those with a large enough sample size attached), Cancelo possesses the worst record in that department. Eleven Premier League teams have now been eliminated before the fifth round. His latest strike earned Brighton a come-from-behind win, backing up a 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool in the Premier League two weeks ago. Mitoma, who played for Japan at the World Cup, is proving a revelation in his first season at Brighton, scoring or setting up a goal in eight of the team's last 11 games. Sheffield United scored their equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time to force a replay, meaning Wrexham, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, will be in the draw for the last 16 being held on Monday. It's only January but Liverpool are already out of the FA Cup and League Cup, languishing in ninth place in the Premier League and their only realistic chance of silverware this season is in the Champions League -- where a last-16 match-up against Real Madrid awaits next month. On a dramatic afternoon of late goals, Liverpool became the latest high-profile club to exit the FA Cup on Sunday as the defending champions conceded a goal in the second minute of stoppage time to lose 2-1 at Brighton in the fourth round.
