It's a rematch of last year's AFC Championship as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals from KC with a trip to Super Bowl LVII on the line.
The O line sorted itself out midway through the season, and Cincy went on to win their final eight games to finish the season at the top of the AFC North. Joe Burrow and the Bengals lost four of their first eight as the offensive line struggled to protect their face of the franchise. Tyreek Hill’s departure opened up the offense even more and Patrick Mahomes carried KC to a top seed in the conference and back to the Conference Championship for a fifth straight time. A field goal pulled the Bengals with in eight points, and Burrow found Ja’maar Chase on a short TD completion to end the third quarter. After throwing two quick TDs, Burrow took a back seat for the rest of the day as Joe Mixon and the ground game carried the Bengals to their second straight Super Bowl with a 27-10 win at Highmark Stadium. They start their drive from the 25 and Burrow finds Mixon with a 6 yard catch. Burrow led the Bengals into the end zone before he half-time break and the Cincy defense took control for the rest of the game, holding Mahomes and KC to just three second half points. Gay was slow to get up and will get some attention from the medical staff. They went to review but the call on the field stands. Burrow rolling out and threw it across his body to the middle of the field looking for Hurst. Burrow finds Higgins on the slant pattern for 11 yards and a first down. Mahomes rolls right and finds Hardman on the run for an 11 yard gain, and a first down.

Steve Spagnuolo and the defensive players will have to play their best game of the season for them to slow down the Bengals enough to win. [Conner Christopherson:](https://twitter.com/Conner_DKC) The Chiefs will eventually beat the Bengals, but I don't think it will be this year. [Marlow Ferguson Jr.:](https://www.si.com/nfl/chiefs/author/marlow-ferguson-jr) Despite it being a real possibility, it’s just incredibly difficult to imagine any team defeating this iteration of the Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs four times out of four, particularly with three of the four at home. Mahomes will be able to overcome whatever the Bengals throw at him and he will show the world why he is the NFL MVP. Andy Reid will have a masterful offensive gameplan, and you get the feeling Mahomes will not let them lose a second consecutive AFC Championship Game at home. Mahomes will be absolutely dialed in and play at an all-time level as he leads the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl in four years. This version of the Bengals is the only team to truly have the edge over the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs. The Bengals have won three in a row against the Chiefs, so it’s tough to say those were flukey wins despite some very strange things that took place. [Jordan Foote:](https://twitter.com/footenoted) The Chiefs showed in Week 13 — as well as in their other two matchups against the Bengals — that they're more than capable of hanging with Cincinnati. The rematch we’ve waited nearly a year to see. [Patrick Mahomes's ankle and Travis Kelce's back](https://www.si.com/nfl/chiefs/news/final-kc-chiefs-injury-updates-before-afc-championship-game-against-cincinnati-bengals), the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals approach kickoff with a chance to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LVII. However, with recent growth from the Chiefs’ defense and the potential for an all-time gameplan from Andy Reid and Co., the case for KC isn’t hard to make.

On top of beating the Chiefs three straight times, the Bengals are a perfect 3-0 in AFC championship games. Mahomes (ankle) was a full participant in practice all week and is slated to start Sunday. What the Chiefs need to do to win: Mahomes needs to be at least 80% of his best. What the Bengals need to do to win: The offensive line has to prove that their remarkable performance against the Bills wasn’t a fluke. If Mahomes were healthy, it would be difficult to pick against the Chiefs at home despite the fact that he is 1-3 against Burrow’s Cincinnati in his career, including that memorable collapse during last year’s AFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals, who upset the Chiefs in last year’s AFC title game, had to take the scenic route after going a mere 12-4 in the regular season. The Bengals are going to start strongly, get a proper stomp on through the first three quarters, but the Chiefs have strength in depth, and most of all, resolve. Story of the season: The Kansas City Chiefs went 14-3 in the regular season, thus earning the all-important bye week in the AFC. I like the Bengals in something of a cake walk, 31-21, with Mahomes suffering through a tough outing on one leg. That’s the QB situation: we’ll take a look at some of the other fun factors leading up to kickoff, but for now, settle in, drink your drink, and if you like, drop me a line. That is the longest streak to begin a career in the Super Bowl era.” Hi folks and welcome to our coverage of the American Football Conference Championship game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs. That is absolutely a 9.5 out of 10, the highest I’ve given in a very, VERY long time. Mahomes hits Kelce, who laterals it to Jerick Mckinnon who drops the ball on the 20 and falls on it!

And he just picked up a huge return to get the Chiefs close to FGF range. He broke a tackle and took off for a huge play last week against Jacksonville, and just did the same here. Cook tipped it up in the air and Williams (who is filling in for Sneed) came down with it. And obviously, the Chiefs have both of their timeouts to conserve time and try to get the ball back. Chiefs will get the ball for one last go at it. And Chris Jones picks up the sack! And now the Chiefs are in clear field-goal range. Mahomes scrambles for the first down and then gets hit late out of bounds. Mahomes and the Chiefs offense responded to that Cincy score with an 11-play, 77-yard touchdown drive of their own to retake the lead. Mahomes scrambled up the right side of the field for five yards and was hit out of bounds, which drew an unnecessary roughness penalty to put them within Butker's range and send them to the Super Bowl. From here, the Chiefs will travel to Arizona, where they'll face the Philadelphia Eagles, who defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship earlier Sunday. Harrison Butker was able to kick the 45-yard game-winning field goal after Patrick Mahomes and the offense moved the ball 39 yards down the field with less than 30 second left in regulation.

'Burrowhead my a**!': NFL star's brutal jab as 'dumb' act spoils Super Bowl dream.
Neither side was properly able to gain a foothold late in the contest until the very end, when a mad dash from Chiefs WR Skyy Moore off of a Bengals punt got the home side into prime field position. It would take some magic from Mahomes and top target Travis Kelce to bring up the first touchdown of the night, seeing the Chiefs take a 13-3 lead. That scoreline soon became 13-13 early in the second half, as Bengals WR Tee Higgins leapt high to haul in a pass from Burrow to score the team's first touchdown of the evening. With that touchdown wiped off the board and Kansas City picking up another penalty, the Chiefs would yet again turn to Butker to add a field goal and make it 6-0. Having forced the Bengals to punt it away on their opening drive, the Chiefs then quickly moved the ball down the field after a pair of 16-yard gains from Travis Kelce and Isiah Pacheco. The Kansas City Chiefs are through to the Super Bowl as a last-second field goal from kicker Harrison Butker secured a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game.

The Bengals got a lot better at running the ball once they moved away from the way they wanted to run the ball at the beginning of the season. Honestly, I have no idea, and I think anyone (other than maybe the Chiefs' team doctors) who tells you they know with any degree of certainty is lying. Jacksonville's top receiving threat was [Christian Kirk](/nfl/players/2180820/christian-kirk/), so the Chiefs moved Sneed into the slot again. [Ja'Marr Chase](/nfl/players/2966320/jamarr-chase/) and [Tee Higgins](/nfl/players/2809208/tee-higgins/) give him two alpha No. The top threats for Cincinnati remain Chase and Higgins, not [Tyler Boyd](/nfl/players/2071582/tyler-boyd/), so it might make sense to get Sneed back to the perimeter and allow McDuffie to try to play physically against Boyd inside. Burrow's superpower is his ability to quickly decide where he is going with the ball and get it out of his hands when the situation calls for him to do so, but he also has the extended play ability that the league's other superstar quarterbacks bring to the table. The Chiefs actually pressured opposing quarterbacks at a higher rate (35.7%) during the regular season than did the Bills (33.7%).
The officiating down the stretch of the AFC championship game is under a microscope.
Cincinnati picked up a first down after the grounding call, and the Chiefs picked up minimal yardage after the extra third-down play. Those are the plays that will be talked about, but the Chiefs were on the receiving end of seemingly raw deals, too. Second, on the play in which Joseph Ossai would enter Bengals infamy, there was an argument that officials missed defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson being held. The result of that conversation was that the third-down play would not count because the clock mistakenly ran off extra time after the second-down play in that series. There was no CIN receiver in the immediate area of the pass. In the fourth quarter alone of Sunday's Bengals vs.

And he just picked up a huge return to get the Chiefs close to FGF range. However, Zac Taylor elected to keep his offense on the field for a fourth-and-6 attempt, which was one of the gutsiest calls of the night. He broke a tackle and took off for a huge play last week against Jacksonville, and just did the same here. Eli Apple was called for DPI on a third-and-9 to erase a sack on Mahomes, and, of course, the unnecessary roughness penalty on Joseph Ossai assisted in allowing the game-winning field goal. While the running game had been nonexistent for the Bengals in this game (Perine and Mixon combined for 41 yards rushing), this might have been a spot to simply move the chain and live to fight another down. That punt was returned 29 yards by rookie Skyy Moore which put the offense already at midfield, needing a manageable amount of yards to get within field goal range. That set the tone for the remainder of the game and helped force the quarterback into two interceptions. That score stood at 20 for the bulk of the fourth quarter until Kansas City's defense was able to force a punt with less than a minute in regulation, and the offense took care of the rest to clinch their spot in the Super Bowl. Over that stretch, the defense was able to play stout against the Chiefs, but they still came away with a field goal to go up 6-0. While this was before Mahomes aggravated the ankle, he was still limited in his mobility but extended the play enough to eventually find Travis Kelce -- who was also dealing with an injury of his own -- for the touchdown. Mahomes scrambled up the right side of the field for five yards and was hit out of bounds, which drew an unnecessary roughness penalty to put them within Butker's range and send them to the Super Bowl. Harrison Butker was able to kick the 45-yard game-winning field goal after Patrick Mahomes and the offense moved the ball 39 yards down the field with less than 30 seconds left in regulation.

Bengals fans were irate only Joseph Ossai was called for a flag on the most pivotal play of the game.
The rip move is one of the most potent moves in a defender's arsenal, and it forces offensive linemen to hold to combat it. Watch the play above again and take note of Hill's pass-rush technique in the center. It is a foul regardless of whether the blocker’s hands are inside or outside the frame of the defender’s body. When that happens, there's more of a no-holds-barred mentality among officials all over the field, not just in the trenches. Use his hands or arms to materially restrict an opponent or alter the defender’s path or angle of pursuit. Instead, the Chiefs were able to kick what was effectively a game-winning field goal.
It didn't last as long as we'd like but it was fun to see Wikipedia getting in on the whole Mayor Jabroni act following the AFC Championship.
Pureval made a paternity test joke about the Bengals relationship to the Chiefs and then declared it “Burrowhead”. Pureval does a solid job as he goes about the business of trying to make life better for his constituents in southern Ohio. As the Mayor of the city of Cincinnati, which is honestly a really underrated town with some fun neighborhoods, we’re sure that Mr.
