Jane Fonda 'Tries Not To Think About' Upcoming Barbarella Remake (MovieWeb)

The 1968 science fiction actress states she is worried about the upcoming film.

It is yet unclear which direction the film or Sweeney as the new Queen of the Galaxy will take in revisiting any pre-feminist, sexploitation aspects of the film. In addition to starring in the film, Emmy-nominated actress Sydney Sweeney will executive produce the Barbarella remake. A box office flop about a sexy, 41st-century astronaut out to stop Durand Durand from destroying the universe (a mad scientist villain, not the band), the film launched Fonda to sex symbol status in the 60s.

Jane Fonda Shares Concerns For Sydney Sweeney Barbarella ... (Screen Rant)

Jane Fonda, the original actor who played the comic icon in the 60s adaptation, shares her concerns for Sydney Sweeney's upcoming Barbarella remake.

On the other hand, a strong female lead does not need to be completely covered up to be empowering, as Sweeney could find a balance between maintaining Barbarella's iconic look and also bringing the character up to speed in today's day and age. [Fonda's "sex symbol" status](https://screenrant.com/jane-fonda-career-resurgence-monster-law-role/), which she has criticized throughout the years. Opening with a strip tease and featuring a controversial self-pleasuring scene, Barbarella led to Fonda, a feminist pioneer in Hollywood, seems unenthusiastic at the prospect due to its sexist nature. While various projects have been in development for years to revive Barbarella, Sydney Sweeney is now set to take on the role in a new adaptation with Sony Entertainment. “It could've been a truly feminist movie”: Jane Fonda Concerned ... (Fandomwire)

Jane Fonda's attempt to deal Barbarella a feminist voice on-screen had failed in 1968 and she worries the same might happen with the new remake.

The cinematic adaptation, borrowed from the French graphic novels by Jean-Claude Forest, was released in 1968 to a demography that was already besotted with the star of the film, Jane Fonda. The saga that began with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Fonda was one that was a rebellion in itself, having been un-preceded by anything similar and being utterly unparalleled in its magnitude. The ’60s were a revolutionary era, as Hollywood – and by extension, its global fanbase – reinvented and redefined ideas of sexuality and empowerment in never-before-attempted projects that only grew bolder and fiercer with time.
