Shrinking Series-Premiere Recap: Psychological Vigilante (Vulture)

What happens when a therapist gets tired of incremental self-improvement and speeds up everyone's mental-health journey? Let's find out!

But the jokes themselves feel like they could be a little snappier, and I have some concerns about the longevity of this premise. Ecstatic, he and Sean spontaneously take off on a joyful drive (and then run) through Pasadena to get to Alice’s soccer game. Jimmy’s brilliant idea is to take him to a boxing gym to find a safe outlet for his violent impulses. Jimmy Laird (Segel) is a therapist who is tired of advocating for the tedium of incremental self-improvement. They make it there to impress Liz and see Alice score a goal, and everything seems perfect — until Grace’s husband shows up and headbutts Jimmy, furious about what he told Grace to do. Critics and viewers described it as a [warm hug of a show](https://www.vulture.com/article/ted-lasso-apple-tv-review.html), a source of much-needed escapism at a time of national mourning (a time that never really ended). Jimmy first deals with the serious consequences of his new plan after a few sessions with Sean, a young soldier referred to him by Gaby. (The third is star Jason Segel.) Bill Lawrence’s influence is particularly apparent in the way Shrinking weaves a strain of darkness through its affable, inoffensive humor; the high-concept premise may sound like goofy fun, but the script from Lawrence, Segel, and Brett Goldstein makes sure to acknowledge the ethical murkiness baked in. It confirms for him that there could actually be value in going full “psychological vigilante” and changing his methods entirely. During a session with Grace (Heidi Gardner) one day, he decides to cut to the chase: Her husband is emotionally abusive, he has no intention of changing, and she needs to be done with him for good. Jimmy desperately wants to reconnect with his daughter and shake himself loose from his yearlong malaise. It’s a show that frequently deals with mental illness, heartbreak, betrayal, and all the other agonies of life that cannot be fixed with a can-do attitude alone.

Why Harrison Ford is Shrinking's big surprise - and secret weapon (digitalspy.com)

Apple TV+'s new comedy-drama Shrinking drops onto our screens with an impressive resumé – it's written and created by Ted Lasso writer/producers Bill ...

Despite the comedic talents of Segel and a terrific supporting cast that also includes Jessica Williams and Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie, the answer could have been ‘no’. Jimmy’s coping mechanisms have estranged him from Alice – who is spending most dinner times over at Liz’s house rather than with her emotionally distant dad – and have led him to just go through the motions at work. Any real therapists watching will probably have checked out in horror by this point, but if you hang in there, the writers do establish early on that these therapy sessions are just one part of the story being told. Of course, you could argue that with After Life already out there, do we need another comedy-drama about a middle-aged man mourning his wife, dropping truth-bombs and debating the meaning of life? You can’t help thinking none of this will end well (and, without spoiling anything, there are some less than positive consequences to Jimmy’s actions). Shrinking isn’t just about Jimmy the therapist, it is about one man’s grief, and how he finds a way through it (maybe).

Shrinking review: 2023's first great ensemble comedy | Digital Trends (Digital Trends)

Shrinking stars Harrison Ford and Jason Segel as a pair of diametrically opposed therapists. The endearing new comedy series premieres January 27 on Apple ...

At its best, the series is able to do what all great TV dramedies should, which is smoothly shift between moments of comfort, heartbreak, and humor all within the span of a few seconds. By the time the series has reached its layered, emotionally complicated ninth episode, Shrinking has already earned its place as one of the more impressive ensemble comedies that have premiered in recent months. The series is an ambitious and emotionally resonant dramedy that isn’t afraid to let its characters be as messy as possible. While its transition toward a looser narrative structure does result in its central premise — Jimmy’s reckless new therapy tactics — essentially falling by the wayside, the adoption of a more leisurely pace gives Shrinking the chance to become a true ensemble comedy. Both of those problems are solved when Gaby and Liz become friends around halfway through Shrinking’s first season, which allows both Williams and Miller to establish a comedic dynamic together that is among the show’s best. Here, Ford is just as gruff and sarcastic as ever, but he’s also allowed to be silly and heartfelt in ways that he’s rarely been given the chance to be on-screen before. However, there are moments of brilliance scattered throughout Shrinking’s uneven initial episodes, and it doesn’t take long for the series to start to emerge as the first truly great ensemble TV comedy of the year. His daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), has been so thoroughly abandoned by her father in the year since her mom’s death that she’s essentially turned to Miller’s Liz to provide the parental supervision Jimmy hasn’t. Jimmy’s mentor and boss, Paul (Harrison Ford), meanwhile, has already been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease by the time Shrinking’s premiere begins. Shrinking’s messy premiere episode follows Jimmy as he decides to finally break out of his own cycle of drugs and general cynicism. Across its first nine episodes, the [Apple TV+ series](https://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/new-on-apple-tv-plus/) runs headfirst into the difficult emotional terrain of its story with the same playful spirit that has, for better or worse, come to define many of Lawrence’s previous TV efforts, including Scrubs, Cougar Town, and yes, Ted Lasso. By the time Shrinking begins, Jimmy’s self-destructive coping methods have become so repetitive that his next-door neighbor, Liz (Christa Miller), reacts to him partying loudly in his backyard at 3 a.m.

Jason Segel's grieving therapist isn't likeable enough to carry this directionless dramedy. Shrinking Apple TV TV Still Jason Segel as Jimmy and Harrison ...

Everyone in the show seems willing to give Jimmy a second, third or umpteenth chance to redeem himself but based on these first two episodes, viewers might not be so accommodating. As a result, he decides to go rogue and tell them what he really thinks, proudly declaring himself “a psychological vigilante” (a move that I imagine actual therapists may be overturning their couches at).
