All of which I guess brings me to my bummer of a conclusion: As fun as any Teen Wolf outing is going to be, by sheer dint of being a Teen Wolf outing, Teen Wolf: The Movie is disappointing. It’s just that the only reason I can see for Allison to be back for The Movie is so that Allison can be back for The Movie, which just feels insulting to everyone involved. Well, being obliged to perform a dangerous ancient ritual with a hard deadline of the next full moon in the middle of a paradoxically dark and rainy night is absolutely par for the course for Scott and his friends, as is said dangerous ancient ritual completely backfiring in a way that’s all but certain to leave someone dead. Part of the issue, of course, is that Teen Wolf, the series, excelled at weaving long emotional threads together not just over many episodes, but multiple seasons; a single 2-hour movie just doesn’t leave room for that kind of slow burn. And like all the deadly dangerous rituals performed under the full moon on a paradoxical night that came before it, the one the Nogitsune kicks into gear to get the Allison Argent of it all going has a classically small-scale goal: kill Scott and his pack. No, the problem is that, of all the critics in the world, I’m the only one who’s committed to Paste’s digital pages the two exact takes that Teen Wolf: The Movie seems determined to be in a fight with. Which means that either that 2014 season really took place in 2008, or The Movie is set in 2029. (On that note: The Movie opens 15 years after the events of the Season 3 finale. As the brief highlight reel I rattled off above hopefully makes clear, The Movie has a lot going for it. Basically, it would have taken one of the Nogitsune’s own Divine Moves to make a Stiles-free, Kira-free, Allison-centric Nogitsune storyline work. On the contrary: I could never hate Teen Wolf, just as I would never suggest it contort itself to fit inside literally any box. In many ways, I am the absolute worst person to be reviewing Teen Wolf: The Movie.

Aside from her involvement in figuring out the real reason behind the Beacon Hills fire, Lydia's return also effectively sets up a new Teen Wolf mystery after she revealed that she has broken up with Stiles because she started having nightmares of being in a car crash that kills him. The Teen Wolf Movie does a great job focusing on the McCall Pack and establishing what their lives have become since the finale. While the young werewolf doesn't have any personal ties to Allison and the mystery surrounding her return other than being a target because of his form, the Teen Wolf Movie did a great job establishing the character, making it the secondary plot. The Teen Wolf Movie doesn't reveal more information about Lydia's dreams, but it's a narrative that could be worth exploring moving forward. It could be the premise of a potential sequel film or spin-off. Years after her tragic death, Allison Argent returns, but while it's supposed to be a reason for celebration, it poses a fresh mystery for the McCall Pack to solve that's especially tricky to navigate since Scott is pitted against the love of life. Since she was gone for a long time, her next act could revolve around reincorporating herself into the team and the world, in general. More than a decade since Scott McCall and his pack dealt with Gerard Argent and the Anuk-Ite, a new mystery pulls them back to their hometown for a new mission.

And with a revival, which is ultimately an act of fan service, doing more is certainly a risk. And the resolution is too neat. Unfortunately, in the case of Teen Wolf: The Movie, the film’s mysteries aren’t labyrinthine enough—nor are the many action scenes compelling enough—to carry a film that’s over two hours long. The action, arguably the most disengaging part of the series, is still lackluster. Additionally, they’re avoiding a group of masked fighters known as the Oni (who have always looked too much like The Jabbawockeez to be taken seriously) as they mercilessly slaughter civilians on the Nogitsune’s behalf. Additionally, the movie is so plot-heavy that viewers don’t get an opportunity to sit with the characters they invested six years in or learn much about their current lives. Expanding the Teen Wolf universe without him is sort of like making a After gathering clues and wielding their magical abilities, they’re able to resuscitate her from a state of limbo (or “bardo”). The show’s creator and writer, Jeff Davis, brings back some of the series’ most fearsome bad guys for a final—but who can be sure?—battle between Beacon Hill’s good and evil supernatural communities. Freed from the shackles of cable, Teen Wolf: The Movie has bare butts, f-bombs, and more blood than when the series lived on MTV. Shows like CW titans Supernatural (2005-2020) and The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) are off the air, Shadowhunters (2017-19) never really got its footing, and the show that felt like the genre’s last stand, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (the Riverdale spin-off and Sabrina the Teenage Witch remake that ran from 2018-2020), seemed to end in a whimper. I’m not sure that being force-fed beefed-up and unpredictably violent young men as romantic heroes [was the healthiest thing for my coming-of-age](https://flipscreened.com/2021/04/02/the-progression-of-werewolf-stereotypes-in-the-media/), but the werewolves of yore weren’t useless. Davis has not only revived the series, which ended in 2017, for a reunion movie (aptly titled Teen Wolf: The Movie), he has also created a brand-new series about teen werewolves, Wolf Pack, both premiering tonight on Paramount+. And by releasing both at the same time, the streamer feels like it’s making a statement: Teen Wolf: The Movie is ending an era, making room for Wolf Pack’s new one to begin.
