Barney Stinson is back, and it will presumably be legendary.
“But it’s also about how they impact the How I Met Your Father story, and how they send one of our characters in a new, unexpected direction. Once we catch up to that, I think people will be pleasantly surprised by how her story turns via Barney.” However, both Aptaker and co-creator Elizabeth Berger are well aware of the timeline disruption this does to their show. “Whenever we talk about bringing back a member of the original crew, you want it to serve two purposes: You want to give some tidbits about what is going on in their lives, where they’ve landed and where they’re at,” Issac Aptaker said. Though the duo is keeping mum as to the role Barney will play in [How I Met Your Father](https://deadline.com/tag/how-i-met-your-father/), they confirm he is not Sophie’s father. “Similar to Robin last year, we’ll learn some more about where Barney’s at, but it’ll also have a major impact on the trajectory, and main narrative, of our season.” The serial womanizer of the group, Barney usually rejected any form of commitment and had a string of debauchery in the early seasons of the series. Could he be the aforementioned daddy? In the final beats of the episode titled “Cool and Chill,” the timeline shifts to a year after the events earlier in the episode. He shrugs and tells Sophie, “Dude!” just as the bumper falls off the Audi onto the sidewalk.
However, that was only the start of his return as co-creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger confirmed he will appear in some more of this 20 episode season ...

How I Met Your Father season 2 is teasing more from a character that isn’t a part of the show. The cameos keep How I Met Your Father interesting, but it should actually be the story and new characters that hold the audience's attention. It’s no secret that How I Met Your Father is tied to How I Met Your Mother in more ways than one. However, How I Met Your Father has yet to firmly establish itself apart from its predecessor to warrant such big cameos. [How I Met Your Mother guest stars](https://screenrant.com/how-met-mother-saturday-night-live-actors/) to keep audiences hooked. Premiering in 2021, How I Met Your Father took the basic premise of its parent show, introduced brand-new characters, and signed on [Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall](https://screenrant.com/sex-city-reboot-sarah-jessica-parker-kim-cattrall-feud/) to play the older version of Hilary Duff’s Sophie.
The Hilary Duff-led spin-off doesn't stray far enough away from the path HIMYM paved for it.
With a whopping 19 episodes left in the season, HIMYF still has plenty of time to prove that it’s more than just a carbon copy—I just hope it’s worth sticking around until then. [20% offW&P Valentine's Day Sale](https://go.linkby.com/IWCKCONS) And for one couple, Valentina (Francia Raisa) and Charlie (Tom Ainsley), their entire dynamic is about how much they love having sex—which is not just notable or edgy anymore. It’s set in the same universe as HIMYM and revolves around the same premises (and more or less the same friend group—that is, a motley crew of millennials trying to take the city by the horns) with an overall tone that feels very beginning-of-Obama’s second term. Sophie’s earnest, devoted, blinders-on quest for love—however less annoying than Ted’s—is out of step with the zeitgeist, one that’s largely characterized by “All I’ve ever wanted was to find love, and I think maybe it was just right in front of me and I ran from it,” she tells him.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did Barney's return on HIMYF come about? · ELIZABETH BERGER: · Was it always the plan to save Barney's cameo for season 2? · ISAAC ...
Barney is so known for his suits and and making sure that it looked great, which is not hard with Neil, but that it was like a perfect Barney suit if we're going to revisit the character. BERGER: It's something we thought a lot about and we knew it was something that was very important to Neil as well, that if he were to return he would want to feel like the creative was right and do service to the original character while also recognizing that things have changed and the time that we live in now. We were really proud of the creative and the way his character is handled and our hope is that How I Met Your Mother fans will really feel like they're seeing the character that they loved and knew but also like he is existing in a 2023 world. APTAKER: Yeah, we can debunk that, just based on the fact of the math of it. We were blessed to be a part of that Hollywood legacy before it got torn down. It was right in the middle [of the season]. But yes, we think it's so much fun and it makes our world bigger and it satisfies fans on a really deep level, so we love to do it and we have the ideas. Now it's just a question of parsing them out and hoping that people are available and want to do it when it's the right time to ask. I'm really excited for how his character changes Sophie's life and the totally new direction that he sends her on. APTAKER: It sends her in a totally new direction, which becomes the engine for a big chunk of our season. Similarly, in season 2, it's going to take a while for the exact situation to reveal itself, but once we fold back around to that Barney moment people will see that he's the exact right person that she needed to run into at that point in her story. We got on a zoom with Neil and pitched him our idea for it and it fell into place very quickly, which was amazing.
Opening Shot: We open on the home of older Sophie, our narrator, in 2050. “Mom, where are you? If you don't come back in three seconds, I'm going to hang up ...
[How I Met Your Mother](https://decider.com/show/how-i-met-your-mother/), I can’t help but feel like this new iteration of the show shares some DNA with Hulu’s one-season wonder [Maggie](https://decider.com/show/maggie/), in which a psychic named Maggie (Rebecca Rittenhouse) sees a glimpse of her future (at her own wedding), and has to piece together who she ends up with. There are too many good writers in Hollywood for us to get drivel like a marine biologist character referring to someone who looks confused by saying, “He looks like an anglerfish who just saw a crab!” (When Sophie seems confused by this, Ian tells her that joke would have killed back on his boat full of other marine biologists.) I don’t know why this line offends me so much, I’m not a marine biologist, but I am someone who appreciates humor, and this is just lazy seafood word salad. We only see him for a moment, much like we only saw Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) briefly last season, but the familiar presence of adults we trust makes the entire situation feel comforting, less bad than it actually is, if only for a brief moment. The only thing the show truly has going for it are the references it makes to its predecessor; in the final moments of the episode, Sophie rear ends a car and the driver happens to be Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). Jesse (Chris Lowell) is an Uber driver and music teacher that Sophie has has feelings for, but Jesse introduced Sophie to Drew (Josh Peck) and they dated for a while before Sophie broke up with him at the end of season one. [How I Met Your Mother](https://decider.com/show/how-i-met-your-mother/) was a [Friends](https://decider.com/show/friends/)-style sitcom with an enduring mystery fans had to earn the answer to over the course of it’s nine seasons on CBS – WHO WAS THE MOTHER GOING TO BE?? Sid and Hannah invite everyone to the bar after Sophie’s show for an impromptu wedding party where we learn that Sid is obsessed with trying to get groups of people to join him in the Electric Slide and Valentina and Charlie can’t keep their hands off each other despite breaking up. But even as a show judged independently of its predecessor, it just lacks so many elements that an endearing, funny sitcom needs. It’s like How I Met My Husband, as Maggie tries to work out who she ended up with (alas we’ll never know because the show was canned). To complicate things even more, Ian (Daniel Augustin), the marine biologist that moved to Australia last season, has returned. Her delivery of this not funny line elicits guffaws from the laugh track, which in turn, elicits a groan from me. [HOW I MET YOUR FATHER SEASON 2](https://decider.com/show/how-i-met-your-father): STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
How I Met Your Father season 2 sees Kim Cattrall's return as future Sophie. However, her role in the comedy series makes another issue frustrating.
Though her absence is indeed a loss for And Just Like That’s quality, How I Met Your Father works well enough for what she’s perhaps looking for. How I Met Your Father is a relatively light workload by comparison, which is likely what Cattrall wanted after years of being a series regular. How I Met Your Father doesn’t utilize Cattrall very well, as she’s limited to scenes where she’s alone talking to her character’s son offscreen. When it was announced that Cattrall would be narrating How I Met Your Father, she seemed like a good fit for the role. While Cattrall landed How I Met Your Father, it's an underwhelming comedy that isn't on par with the actress’ talents. Cattrall narrates the How I Met Your Mother spinoff like the late Bob Saget, as an older Ted Mosby, did for its predecessor.
