Following a brief rain delay, the match was reduced to a 19-over affair. Abbott finished the game in emphatic style, removing Thunder tailenders Sandhu and Qadir for a duck to roll the cross-town rivals within 15 overs. The Sixers won the toss and elected to bat first at the SCG. Dwarshuis returned to the attack and found immediate success, dismissing Thunder teenager Joel Davies for 10 (10), caught at deep mid wicket by Murphy. The 38-year-old wasnโ€™t done there, removing Ben Cutting for 6 (9) for his fourth scalp of the evening as the Thunder crumbled to 7-48. In response, Gilkes departed in the second over for 1 (4) after trying to slap Sean Abbott over the mid-off fielder, instead gifting a regulation catch to Jordan Silk on the inner ring. Veteran tweaker Steve Oโ€™Keefe was brought into the attack and immediately had an impact, dismissing Thunder young gun Ollie Davies for 2 (3) after feathering a catch through to Philippe with the gloves. Smith and Sixers captain Moises Henriques then combined for an unbeaten 155-run partnership for the third wicket to put the hosts in a commanding position. The 33-year-old reached triple figures in the 17th over with a mighty heave over the long-on boundary, bringing the 38,757 Sydney spectators to their feet. When Oโ€™Keefe bowled Sams later in the same over, the Thunder fell to 6-40 and were out of the game. By the drinks break, the Thunder had more batters back in the dugout (four) than boundaries on the scoreboard (three). They were to be the only wickets lost as Smith and Moises Henriques (45no) forged a 155-run partnership - the largest in the current edition of the tournament.

Smith hammers back-to-back tons as Sixers smash Thunder (cricket.com.au)

Steve Smith's century five days ago was good but he outdid himself in the Sydney Smash with a stunning century on a difficult SCG pitch.

It was the Thunder's second batting capitulation of BBL 12, and Sixers mastermind Greg Shipperd and skipper Moises Henriques appear to have uncovered Smith's ideal position in the shortest format. "That's not an easy wicket to bat on. Losing partners Josh Philippe (10) and Kurtis Patterson (2) in the space of five balls in the fourth over only slowed him down for a brief period as Sams (0-47 from four overs) again copped the treatment from as Australia's No.3 as his second over of the match went for 13. 12 respectively. The Australian superstar treated a sold out SCG of 38,757 to a knock for the ages in the Sydney Smash on Saturday night, belting his second straight hundred to lead the Sixers to an imposing 2-187 from 19 overs.

Steve Smith belts second consecutive century, equals Big Bash ... (Sporting News AU)

Steve Smith has become only the second Big Bash player to hit consecutive centuries in the competition as he helped the Sydney Sixers to a big win.

"That's not an easy wicket to bat on. The former Australian captain brought up his century off only 56 balls as the Sixers amassed a score of 2/187 off their 19 overs. Smith smashed an incredible 125 off 66 balls - which is the fifth highest score in BBL history - to lead the Sixers to a 125-run victory in the derby.

Smith's career-best T20 knock puts Sixers in hunt for top spot (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Sydney Sixers 187 for 2 in 19 overs (Smith 125*, Henriques 45*, Sandhu 2-42) beat Sydney Thunder 62 (Warner 16, O'Keefe 4-10, Abbott 3-11) by 125 runs.

In the penultimate over he was then in the firing line from Smith himself when a fiercely struck drive off Sams hammered in his thigh at the non-strikers' end. The Sixers' captain had one of the best seats in the house, although he copped a few blows for his efforts. Warner's return to the BBL, after a much longer gap than Smith's, has brought nowhere near the same rewards for Thunder. That marked a gear change for Smith who went to fifty from 31 balls in an over where he again put Sams into the stands. Smith sped into the 90s with two sixes in three balls off Sandhu in the 15th over before launching Qadir over wide long-on, his second fifty taking just 25 deliveries. He became the second player in the BBL to score back-to-back hundreds after Ben McDermott.
