Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo put on a show as they came head to head in Paris Saint-Germain's 5-4 win over a Riyadh All-Star XI on Thursday.

“Footballers like Ronaldo and Messi have huge profiles and we’d like to see them resisting being used as the famous faces of sportswashing, including by speaking out about human rights issues in both Saudi Arabia and Qatar.” “Ronaldo’s big-money transfer to Al Nassr and Messi’s engagement by the Saudi authorities as a tourism ambassador are both part of Riyadh’s aggressive sportswashing programme, with the authorities seeking to exploit the celebrity appeal of elite sport to deflect attention from the country’s appalling human rights record,” Peter Frankental, Amnesty UK’s economic affairs director, said in a statement. [sportswashing](https://www.cnn.com/videos/sports/2020/04/27/sportswashing-history-saudi-arabia-newcastle-united-russia-china-football-world-cup-spt-intl.cnn) – a phenomenon whereby corrupt or autocratic regimes invest in sport and sports events to whitewash their international reputation – from both Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which bankrolls PSG through the company Qatar Sports Investments. “Backed by an incredibly passionate crowd at the King Fahd International Stadium, the Saudi Pro League players truly put in a performance to be proud of that showcased the strength of Saudi Arabian football.” “Players from our league relished the opportunity to pit their talents against some of the best players in the world, such as Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, Achraf Hakimi, and, of course, Lionel Messi,” Saudi Pro League chairman AdbulAziz Al-Afaleq said in a statement. Despite being a friendly, the game was played at a furious pace as a packed out crowd inside the King Fahd Stadium was treated to a goal-fest between the French champion and a team consisting of the best players from Saudi’s domestic league.

Ronaldo scores twice, cops punch to the face in lively reunion with Messi in $3.7m friendly.

It was the first outing in oil-rich Saudi for Ronaldo, who will make his Saudi Pro League debut for Al Nassr on Sunday after signing for more than 200 million euros, according to a source close to the club. Mbappe put PSG back in front shortly after the break, turning his marker inside-out and laying on an easy finish for Sergio Ramos, before Hyun-soo Jang found a third equaliser for the hosts. For Qatar-owned PSG, Messi and Kylian Mbappe both scored and Neymar missed a penalty before they withdrew on the hour-mark alongside Ronaldo, who was representing a composite Saudi side, to leave the world’s four best-paid players watching from the bench in Riyadh. Ronaldo’s first touch in Saudi football was a throw-in but he had a shot saved and a penalty appeal waved away before Navas caught him flush on the cheekbone as they challenged for a high ball. Ronaldo, 37, was decked by PSG ‘keeper Keylor Navas’s flailing fist but he drilled the resulting penalty and then added another in a 5-4 exhibition defeat, his first appearance since moving to Saudi Arabia in a deal said to total more than 400 million euros. Cristiano Ronaldo recovered from a punch in the face to score twice against Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday in a lively reunion with his great rival Lionel Messi that demonstrated the financial firepower of the resource-rich Gulf.

Ronaldo and Messi might never play head-to-head again but they rose to the moment on Thursday, scoring goals and delighting fans in Riyadh.

Then [Marquinhos](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/297070/Marquinhos) scored a tap-in to make it 2-1, before PSG had the chance to make it 3-1 when Neymar was awarded a penalty after a VAR review. By the time Ronaldo and Messi -- last on the same pitch when Barcelona met Juventus in the Champions League in 2020 -- were substituted after 60 minutes, the score was 4-3. [Juan Bernat](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/164194/Juan-Bernat) was sent off for wiping out Mohamed Kanno on the halfway line. What's certain is that Ronaldo, approaching his 38th birthday and firmly in the final stage of his career, isn't bored of scoring goals, and with seconds left at the end of the first half, he got above Ramos to head against the post and then turn in the rebound. Jumping to head a free-kick floated into the penalty area, he was clattered by former Real Madrid teammate [Keylor Navas](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/73247/Keylor-Navas), and Qatari referee Abdulrahman al Jassim pointed to the spot. The football superstar recovered from an early blow to bag a brace in a thrilling clash against his long-time rival.

Neymar then had a weak penalty saved by Mohammed al Owais after he was tripped in the area, and Ronaldo made it 2-2 before half-time when he converted the rebound after his header came back off a post. The All Stars, made up of players from Al Hilal and Ronaldo’s new club Al Nassr, equalised when the Portugal captain crashed in a penalty after he was fouled by PSG keeper Keylor Navas. End of an era? Messi & Ronaldo trade goals in late-career clash as ... (Goal.com)

Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo scored as the two rivals faced off one more time in an eventful 5-4 draw between an All-Star XI and PSG.

He was nowhere near a cross and clattered into Ronaldo to concede the penalty for the first goal, and looked shaky throughout the rest of the game. [Scoring from the penalty spot](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/watch-ronaldo-scores-twice-punch-psg-navas/blt1d6666847c9163a9) to get himself off the mark, the 37-year-old's second of the evening was much more impressive. Ronaldo vs Messi for one last time – goals, trophies and why they ... (The Athletic)

Two of the game's greats met in an exhibition match in Riyadh - this is what happened and how the game came about.

[The Athletic’s Spanish football coverage](https://theathletic.com/4064085/2023/01/09/barca-barcelona-real-madrid/) has expanded… There was a mass exodus here, too — though this time it was the wholesale substitutions at the hour mark that did the trick for the fans, some of whom paid up to SAR 1,500 (£320, $397) for a ticket, battling one of the coldest nights of the year. Once VAR confirmed the penalty (yes, there was VAR), he attempted his trademark slow run-up penalty, but was thwarted by Al-Owais. At the other end, Ronaldo made sure to get one up on his rival. There followed a collective ‘Siuuu’ with the force of those 67,000 fans, including Ohio-born Youtuber/Ronaldo fanboy Speed, as the Team Riyadh Season skipper powered home his first goal on Saudi soil. For Ronaldo, it is an anticipated league debut at home against Ettifaq 24 hours earlier. Outside the tent-shaped stadium located on the outskirts of Riyadh, which is reminiscent in its own way of Qatar’s Al Bayt Stadium used in the World Cup, fans of the two Riyadh rivals arrived holding hands, a sign of friendship in Arab culture, and donning scarves of each other’s club. The outcome was never in doubt. Ronaldo could not stop smiling as the 67,000 supporters chanted his name in unison before the game began. The same awkward holding of hands between foes-turned-friends was on display minutes before kick-off as Al-Alshaikh was joined by Al-Khelaifi and, somewhat inexplicably, by octogenarian Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. They were here to play an exhibition game against “Riyadh Season XI”, a selection of the top local and foreign players from the Saudi capital’s two powerhouses, Al Hilal and Al Nassr. It was the latest in a growing list that included WWE, Cirque du Soleil, Bruno Mars, BTS and more.

How Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer to Saudi Arabia makes a move for ... (The National)

Thursday's high-profile exhibition could pave the way for the Argentine to follow his old foe and sign for Riyadh rivals Al Hilal.

“Messi will come in the summer. Hilal are the biggest club in Asia. So they must have the best player also.” Of course, everyone would love to see again Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi playing in the same league. Echoing Joyce's remarks, and underlining the newfound interest outside the kingdom in its football, Al Kassim added: “Now that Cristiano Ronaldo is here, that will also open the door for so many other players who can join the league. The nine-time Saudi champions hailed the acquisition as “more than history in the making”. “If Messi comes to Al Hilal, I would not be surprised," Abdullah said. For sure, Hilal is a very big team and if they want a player, they can afford it. “For sure, if Nassr have Ronaldo, we must have Messi,” Al Daher said. In the past three weeks, in the slipstream of the five-time Uefa Champions League winner's signing, the names mentioned to potentially follow have included Real Madrid stars Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Eden Hazard, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets, PSG’s Sergio Ramos, Liverpool’s Robert Firmino and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante. “If you ask me about Messi coming to Saudi Arabia, who would not love to see Messi playing in their country? Ronaldo grinned wide; later he blew a kiss, prompting his name to reverberate around the arena.
