The veteran actor, who was born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, is happy to be back together with Red Forman in Point Place.
"It was always in the back of my head that that’s where we were," he said. While "That '90s Show," like the original series, is set in Wisconsin, it's not really about Wisconsin. Red isn't the same person he was in "That '70s Show." "I thought the script was right on the money," Smith said. It's not like Smith had been in storage since "That '70s Show" ended. All 10 episodes of the follow-up to "That '70s Show" are now streaming on Netflix.
ComingSoon spoke to That '90s Show star Kurtwood Smith about Netflix's sequel series, which begins streaming on January 19, 2023.
And it changed the focus of their lives, the direction of their lives, I think, and so they certainly remember that. How great is it knowing that the original show’s legacy is just going to grow because of this and it works on multiple levels? I mean, especially, I think, when they found out who was behind the show — the Turners and Greg — they felt comfortable coming back. I mean, I knew it was going to be done the right way because we had the people with the right pedigree there. Maybe he brought it for after the show.” But I said, “Tommy, what’s in the little bag?” And he said, “It’s my Tesla key, man.” Now he’s carrying around a Tesla key instead of a pouch of weed. the talent is obvious and their work ethic — they’re there on time, they know their lines, they don’t screw around, but yet at the same time, they have fun. When I was at the premier the other night, I was standing next to Tommy, and Tommy has quite a reputation with weed, so we’re standing there and he is got this leather pouch hanging around his neck. I just knew it was going to be right, and it was. She’s new to the show, of course, Andrea [Anders], and she’s just terrific. So it was really fun having him back on the show, and I’m sure we’ll see more, in the same way it was with Tommy, Tommy Chong. Or once you knew that this was being done the right way, were you on board? Tyler Treese: I love that the show wasn’t just aping off the original, it was a proper continuation.
Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, who play Red and Kitty on That '90s Show, talk working with Mila Kunis and the old cast and meeting a new generation.
"You're an Eagle Scout." "OK," Rupp says. And you can really see that when you see him redoing the part." "It was great seeing them playing the parts, and it was great seeing how much of the roles actually came from the actors," he says. But Red and Kitty's dynamic has remained a constant from "That '70s Show" to "That '90s Show," and it's a centrepiece of the revival. "Could I at least be in the Eagle Scouts?" "You're very helpful. The pair, who play Eric Forman's parents, Red and Kitty, on "That '70s Show," reprise their roles on "That '90s Show," which premiered on Netflix on Jan. But years later, even with a new set of feisty youngsters hanging out in their basement, Red and Kitty's dynamic has remained the same, with Kitty's laugh a constant presence ("I do not have her laugh," Rupp emphasises) and Red as crotchety as ever. In the original, "Kitty had 4,000 owls in the kitchen. "She found it. "It was really fun seeing everyone searching, trying to find their character again," Rupp adds.
PRIDE spoke with returning stars on how their iconic characters have evolved since the '70s — oh, and an adorable coming-out scene.
I was happy to do it for the kids.” “I was kind of honored to be the one that Ozzie chose, or the writers chose,” she shares. “I was happy to do it. And it was so right for the decade it was, it was just perfect. “I already had it in me and it was very, very easy and,” she says, turning to Smith, “then all I have to do is look at this guy and anything I’m missing comes back.” “It was very easy for me because I know who she is and the writers wrote to my strengths,” Rupp tells PRIDE.
