¸Alexander Zverev manages comeback win over Varillas in Melbourne (TennisUpToDate.com)

Varillas played a very brave match taking it to Zverev in most rallies but the German stayed calm and was able to turn around a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

In the final set, Zverev elected to stay patient as Varillas was still bombing away winners. Varillas once again got the better of Zverev in the 3rd set taking it 7-5. It was a very interesting match between Zverev and Varrilas.

With the crowd very much on the side of the underdog, Varillas looked to have matched Zverev on serve in the fifth until a couple of crucial unforced errors set up two match points. Zverev was able to convert the second of these to advance to round two after four hours and six minutes. Things were no easier in the fourth and approaching the tie-break, the upset looked on but Zverev was able to convert the crucial points to set up a decider. Zverev was broken in game nine giving the Peruvian the opportunity to serve for the set and he held his nerve to take a surprise lead.

Juan Varillas vs Alexander Zverev Prediction and Odds: Australian ... (Pundit Feed)

A place in the second round of the Australian Open is up for grabs as Juan Varillas takes on Alexander Zverev on Tuesday. The German player has had a slow.

Alexander Zverev’s 2023 campaign got off to a rocky start, as he lost two of two matches at the United Cup. To be fair, Juan Pablo Varillas has mostly plied his trade in the Challenger circuit; however, he has won seven of his last eight matches, and is heading into this match with a lot of confidence. - What are the bookmakers’ odds on these players? However, due to the withdrawal of Marin Cilic from the main draw, Varillas qualified as a lucky loser. Although Alexander Zverev is the overwhelming favourite to win this match, his recent form hasn’t inspired a lot of confidence. The German player has had a slow start to his 2023 campaign, and he’ll look to get back on course with a win today.

In other matches, Grigor Dimitrov beat Aslan Karatsev 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 6-2 in a battle of two former Open semi-finalists and five-time runner-up Andy Murray rolled back the years with the win of the day to oust Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (10-6). Fifth seed Andrey Rublev eliminated former finalist Dominic Thiem 6-3 6-4 6-2 in two hours, 10 minutes before the roof was closed on JCA. But Basilashvili applied his own heat before eighth-seeded Fritz advanced with a 6-4 6-2 4-6 7-5 victory under a closed roof on John Cain Arena. But he did enough in the fifth set to keep his 27-year-old rival, who mostly plays on the challenger circuit, at bay. The German 12th seed was expected to breeze past the Peruvian, ranked No.103, but instead had to claw his way to a 4-6 6-1 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 victory on Margaret Court Arena on Tuesday. The 12th seed, who was a semi-finalist at Melbourne Park in 2020, never looked comfortable through the match, with his unforced error tally a costly 58.
