At a packed Coffs Harbour, Steve Smith's stunning century repaid the cash shelled out for him to sign with the Sydney Sixers – with interest.
Smith’s innings was a statement of T20 intent for the future. As though relieved, Smith slammed his very next delivery over the cover boundary, and was on his way. At times in the past, all these statements held a kernel of truth.
The Australian Test star smashed 101 from just 56 deliveries in his second game back in the BBL.
Carey made the most of the short boundaries to reach a half-century in his second game back from Test duty before Dwarshuis’ yorker crashed into his stumps. The Strikers missed three early chances to dismiss Smith. With the last ball before the drinks break, Smith equalled his previous BBL high-score of 66 and then became the third man this summer to hit a BBL century with a six over deep backward square leg. But called in to replace Nathan Lyon (knee soreness), India-bound spinner Todd Murphy had a hand in three quick wickets and finished with the best figures of his young BBL career (3-35) to make the equation easier. Smith’s innings, the equal-best of the BBL summer, came to an end when he scrapped plans to sneak a second run but slipped as he turned back to his crease, only to be run out by Matt Short. K 'bargain': Smith ends 12-year Sixers drought with 'absurd' ton as Head flops again.
Obviously a mix-up in the middle between us, but I was wanting him to face as many balls as possible and he’s still trying to come back for two. “It didn’t even light up, he was pretty quick to get his bat down... a man on a mission and a fine display of power hitting,” Fox Cricket’s Isa Guha said. “Steve was batting on a different wicket tonight. “I was pretty much going to try and hit every ball for six from there,” Smith said later in the coverage. Smith sat on 95 and couldn’t help but hit a huge six to raise the bat, bending down to sweep the bowling of Ben Manenti over the rope.

Kurtis Patterson came along for the ride as they took 27 runs from the Power Surge without losing a wicket. Back from international duty, the 33-year-old has been in supreme touch, but he took his powers to another level as the floodgates opened. A happy, comfortable, and completely ruthless Steve Smith has steamrolled the Adelaide Strikers’ bowlers with an incredible century in Coffs Harbour.

But no doubt, his two returns of 36 (27) and 101 in his new role at the top of the order has given Australian selectors plenty to ponder. "There's not a great deal of T20 internationals, so for me, Test and one-day cricket are the huge priorities with what's coming up and then we'll wait and see," Smith said last week ahead of his return for the Sixers. It was his first KFC BBL hundred and second overall in the T20 format, but he wouldn't face another delivery as he was run out in the following over after a mix up with Sixers skipper Moises Henriques coming back for a second run.

Having been sidelined for most of Australia’s recent T20 World Cup campaign, Smith would have felt a sense of vindication while raising his bat and saluting the 9576 spectators on Tuesday. “At the moment, it feels like if it’s not the perfect conditions maybe we’re susceptible when it starts swinging or the spinners get a hold of us in the middle of the innings.” T20 globetrotter Tim David forced Smith out of the side ahead of the 2022 tournament, with national selectors opting for muscle over finesse in the middle order — but the decision backfired during Australia’s opening fixture against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at the SCG, rolled for 111 in pursuit of a 201-run target. It was a white-ball masterclass. “So that was disappointing, I would have liked to get a couple more at the end but wasn’t to be.” Smith would have inflicted further damage if not for a mix-up while running between the wickets in the 16th over, slipping on the pitch and failing to make his ground.
