Stefanos Tsitsipas Starts Australian Open Bid With Halys Win | ATP ... (ATP Tour)

He will meet home wild card [Rinky Hijikata](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/rinky-hijikata/h0bh/overview), who battled back to beat [Yannick Hanfmann](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/yannick-hanfmann/h997/overview) 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3, in the second round. Djokovic had later described the Frenchman as playing 'like a Top 10 opponent', and he belatedly showed some of that form in the third set as he began to apply some pressure to the Tsitsipas delivery. [Carlos Alcaraz](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/carlos-alcaraz/a0e2/overview) to become No. A barnstorming start from the Greek severely reduced the chances of a third Halys victory in row, however, as the World No.4 deployed his serve and forehand to good effect en route to taking a commanding two-sets-to-love lead without facing a break point. The Greek certainly started his campaign like a man on a mission on Monday at Melbourne Park, where he eased past [Quentin Halys](https://www.atptour.com/en/players/quentin-halys/hb64/overview) 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(6) to reach the second round. The 24-year-old did just that, delivering a highly aggressive and largely consistent performance — and holding off a third-set resurgence from Halys — to seal victory in exactly two hours.

Tsitsipas: “I have worked a lot, 2023 will be different” (Greek Herald)

A few days before the first big meeting of the new season in Melbourne, Stefanos Tsitsipas seemed optimistic about his course in 2023.

I have the ability to handle the pressure and challenges this year will bring. “I have made it clear since the beginning of the year what I want to achieve this year (the No.1). I want to stay grounded and do my job, the way I do it. I am thankful that there is no problem at the moment and I am really playing the way I want to play. And for us it is an incredible honor to be able to do it at such a high level and of course on the occasion of the United Cup. “It’s hard to put it this way, but a lot of analysis has gone into understanding what needs to be done to be able to get to the next level.

Stefanos Tsitsipas barely survives in the 3rd set to win the match against Quentin Halys in three sets 6-3 6-4 7-6(6) moving on at the Australian Open.

A good performance overall but he was very lucky in the final set. The 3rd set was the most complicated one because Tsitsipas trailed in that one. The second set was rather comfortable for the Greek as well.

Men's wrap: Tsitsipas, Felix, Tiafoe hold strong (Australian Open)

Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Frances Tiafoe all advanced on Monday in Melbourne, but their passages to the second round didn't come easily.

And he exited in the first two rounds in his past two Grand Slams. But I like the conditions here, I like the courts. Once there, he earned a match point against the mighty Novak Djokovic. "Just happy I got out of there," Tiafoe said in his on-court interview. "I think my fighting spirit showed at the end," Tsitsipas, who tallied a tidy 46 winners and only 17 unforced errors, said. Tsitsipas isn't Australian but you would be forgiven for thinking he was, given the support he habitually receives in Australia.
