The riders are just about to to head out of the neutral zone and officially be on their way. The UCI Women's World Tour event has attracted 77 riders to take the start in Glenelg today. Boilard is back in the race, but Stannard has had to unfortunately abandon. Sylvie Swinkels is attempting to brave the block headwind. The riders are on Chaffeys Road and approaching the first classified climb of the day. The speeds are high with 42km to go. It's looking nervous in the bunch as they get closer to the sprint finale. The wind is too much for a solo attacker it seems. Miermont is back in the peloton after a brave chase and gets a pat on the back from her teammates. The chase group is still in pursuit. With less than 30km to go, Tiril Jorgensen has dropped back in the peloton. Dilyxine Miermont (St Michel - Mavic - Auber93) has given up the ghost and gone back into the peloton.

Ewan’s last grand tour stage win was on stage seven of the 2021 Giro d’Italia, which he abandoned the next day, citing knee pain. Daria Pikulik wins Women's Tour Down Under stage 1 sprint (Cyclingnews.com)

Human Powered Health rider beats Copponi and Baker after battle in crosswinds.

After going through the finish with 39 km to go, Isabelle Carnes (ARA Skip Capital) and Gina Ricardo (Team BridgeLane) went on the attack and built a gap of up to two minutes. Her teammate Grace Brown used her power to win the first intermediate sprint in Willunga, taking three bonus seconds ahead of Alex Manly and Ruby Roseman-Gannon (both Team Jayco-AlUla). “The team didn’t have a WorldTour win, and now I am the first one in the team with a WorldTour win. But as no team had more than two riders in the group and the wind direction wasn’t ideal, the race came together again. A first crash in the neutral zone forced Elizabeth Stannard (Zaaf Cycling Team) to abandon before the flag had dropped for the 100.4-kilometre stage. Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health) won stage 1 of the 2023 Women’s Tour Down Under, crossing the line first at Snapper Point in Aldinga.

The sprint trains formed and in the final 200 metres, Pikulik powered between Georgia Baker and Clara Copponi for the victory. The Canadian contingent is Simone Boilard, who was 10th in last year’s RideLondon Classique, and Coles-Lyster of the Spanish Zaaf squad. TDU Ride Diary (Tour Down Under): catching up with team ... (Ride Media)

This is a little update about what RIDE Media is up to now that WorldTour racing has returned to Australia for the first time since 2020...

There is a lot to see when visiting the TDU and I hope you enjoy seeing what I’m getting up to while back in South Australia. And also keep following RIDE Media on this site, [YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/embed/@ride-media) for updates on other aspects of the TDU in 2023. I noted the (well-publicised) change from Shimano to SRAM for the 2023 season and, after a few minutes of discussion, he agreed to do an impromptu interview about getting the Cervélo bikes ready for racing. and, that time, the fractures were on my left side (and I also copped a pneumothorax and some road rash). In the coming days we will be presenting a series of interviews with team mechanics and an overview of the equipment being used in 2023. While in Adelaide, I’m collecting content about a range of things related to the race, South Australia, and pro c cycling.

Michaela Drummond takes second behind New Zealand criterium champion while Nina Buijsman secures third.

That’s because the gap was now shrinking, at 26 laps to go dropping below 30 seconds and then with one of the big teams who had missed the move – Trek-Segafredo – pulling on the front it ultimately fell below 20 seconds. The time trial runner-up at the Australian National Championships, Georgie Howe (Jayco AlUla) was an early aggressor, out the front and taking the first of the intermediate sprint points but then Dutch FDJ Suez rider Loes Adegeest crossed the gap. The time advantage grew and grew, heading closer to 50 seconds and then near a minute. The lead group appeared to be in a dominant enough position that the talk started about what would happen if the field was caught – they’d be taken out with 2 laps to go was the answer to let the lead group have a clear run to the finish was the answer but the need to use this option never eventuated. "I think once we got to around 45 minutes, I was thinking, Yeah, okay. I think we did have a good chance," said Wollaston.

Tour Down Under Version 3.0: How Australia's biggest race is ... (VeloNews)

Women's race is upgraded to WorldTour status and new summit finale replaces Old Willunga Hill.

The race was born in 2016, and put the WorldTour on its radar. It’s a popular concept for riders and teams, which can keep all their bikes and equipment in one place for the entire race. Live music and chats with racers fill out the week. For years, the race was often decided by race bonuses in a sometimes gripping battle that went down to the final sprint. The race features four stages to open the busy racing period. The ex-pro takes over as race director intent on making his imprint. The wildly popular climb saw tens of thousands of rowdy fans packed in for a big day of beers, barbecues, and bikes. In are a men’s time trial and WorldTour status for the women’s race. At 5km, that’s unlikely, but any gaps will put pressure on teams to attack and chase back the time. Things evolved for Version 2.0 when the men’s race bumped to WorldTour status in 2010. What hasn’t changed is the summertime vibe and bike-festival feel to the WorldTour season opener. O’Grady’s debut as race director was delayed by two years by the pandemic stops.
