Napoli crush Juventus to extend huge Serie A lead (World Soccer Talk)

Juve will now have to regroup as they turn their attention to the Coppa Italia next week. Napoli added a fifth goal as substitute Eljif Elmas scored in the 72nd minute. Osimhen and Kvara connected again for the team’s fourth goal on the night. With his back to goal, Arkadiusz Milik played a simple pass to the Argentine who, like Kvaratskhelia, curled a shot passed the goalkeeper. Osimhen pounced on a loose ball inside Juve’s box and found the wide open Georgia international. It was only the fourth time this season that Juve allowed the opening goal in league play.

Rampant Napoli thrash Juventus to open up 10-point advantage in ... (The Guardian)

Victor Osimhen scored twice and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia once as Napoli thrashed title rivals Juventus 5-1 and opened up a 10-point lead at the top of Serie A.

However, Napoli took the lead in the 14th minute. The humiliation was complete in the 72nd when Elmas’ effort was deflected beyond Szczęsny and into the net. That eventually sparked Juventus into life and Di María hit the crossbar after rushing onto a wayward pass from Rrahmani.

Napoli Look To Run Away With Serie A Title After Overwhelming ... (Forbes)

The match, which was played before a full crowd at Diego Armando Maradona stadium, ended up being a potential watershed in the 2022/23 Serie A season.

In a single game, Napoli inflicted a five-goal defeat on a team that had just conceded seven times up to that point in the season. The second half, however, turned out to be a one-way match. Prior to Friday night’s game, their defense had conceded only seven goals in 17 Serie A rounds. The work of head coach Luciano Spalletti has especially borne fruit this year, with the Partenopei implementing an exciting brand of soccer based on ball possession and offensive mindset. Osimhen was also responsible for setting up his side’s second goal, courtesy of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. 'Napoli hurricane' – How Italy reacted to Serie A leaders' stunning ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis declared himself 'ecstatic' after watching his side dismantle Juventus on Friday night.

They play the game the right way and showed that tonight. We had little energy but we were coming off eight wins and now we need to get to work and get back on track next week in the Coppa Italia. Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri: “These nights can happen, the defeat is deserved. This enormous satisfaction is for you, for those who were at the stadium and for those who supported us from all over the world. Turin-based Tuttosport took a Juve perspective, calling it “another disgrace”. It was a huge moment.

Four things to watch during Serie A Matchday 18 as leaders Napoli ... (BT)

Four things to watch during Serie A Matchday 18 as leaders Napoli end Juventus' winning run in emphatic fashion! The Old Lady had won their last eight league ...

Only Osimhen sits ahead of the World Cup winner in the division's scoring charts this season. However, defensive sloppiness saw a 1-0 lead soon turn into a 2-1 deficit in the first of those matches, while in the second, a 2-0 advantage evaporated late on as Lazio were forced to accept a draw in front of a stunned Stadio Olimpico. Maurizio Sarri's men now head into a meeting with Sassuolo needing three points, with city rivals Roma and Atalanta sitting on the same number of points as the Eagles and Inter three points ahead of them. On their return to action, games against Lecce and Empoli, although tricky, were not the sort of fixtures that should intimidate a side with ambitions of dining at European football's top table. However, Verona have the second-worst rearguard in the entire league, one that needs to work out a way to stop Lautaro Martinez, who has scored in each of his last two games. In what has been a depressing season for Hellas Verona and their fans, the form of Scottish left-back Josh Doig, signed in the summer from Hibernian, has been a source of some solace. That was how Monza profited deep into stoppage time last weekend, while second-tier Parma were on top of Inter for long spells of their Coppa Italia clash on Tuesday before eventually succumbing to the favourites. Things got worse in midweek as they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia at the last-16 stage by Torino in extra time, and the reigning league champions now head to Lecce hoping to pick up at least a point and consolidate second spot, but they will be up against an opponent that has taken 11 points from the last 15 on offer and has Lorenzo Colombo, on loan from Milan, leading the line. Every one of his four strikes has come at an important time and he also has the strength of character to respond emphatically to setbacks, as he showed by scoring a screamer at Napoli just minutes after missing a penalty. The 20-year-old underlined what he's all about in Monday's vital 2-0 win over Cremonese when he produced a lung-busting run from well inside his own half to the edge of the visitors' penalty area and then played a lovely measured pass for Darko Lazovic to bag his second of the evening. Juventus were unable to capitalise on Milan's capitulation against Roma last weekend as the Old Lady saw their run of eight straight wins and eight straight clean sheets obliterated by leaders Napoli on Friday night to fall back to third behind Milan on goals scored, with the Rossoneri travelling to in-form Lecce on Saturday evening. The 20-year-old has really come into his own, scoring three and assisting two in his last five top-flight games for the side who won Serie B last season.

Napoli deserve to be on top, now we must put this defeat behind us and move on,” said Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri. The home side went ahead in the 14th minute when Kvaratskhelia’s acrobatic kick forced Wojciech Szczesny to parry it into the path of Osimhen to head in from close range, before the Nigerian returned the favor in the 39th minute for Kvaratskhelia to finish with a low strike. It was the first time in almost 20 years that Juventus had conceded five goals in a Serie A match. Di Maria put Juventus back in the match three minutes later when he made it 2-1 with a low shot into the left corner, leaving Meret helpless between the posts. Juve striker Arkadiusz Milik tried to find a way past Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret with a header five minutes later, however, his shot was not strong enough to cause trouble. Napoli went ahead in the 14th minute, after Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny saved a close-range bicycle kick by winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia but failed to deny Victor Osimhen’s follow-up with a header. Juventus slipped to third but are level on 37 points with second-placed AC Milan, who have a game in hand. Follow Serie A live updates with InsidesSport.IN

CorSport: Serie A will debut semi-automated offside in Supercoppa ... (SempreMilan)

AC Milan and Inter will square off in the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday next week and semi-automated offside will be devoted by the Lega for that clash.

The Supercoppa will be played in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and kick-off is set for 20:00 CET. It will then be used for the rest of the season in Serie A, as per the newspaper. Hopefully, it will contribute to less controversy.
