Tatjana Patitz, Original Supermodel, Has Died (Vogue.com)

Supermodel Tatjana Patitz, who appeared in the Freedom '90 video and on many Vogue covers, has died.

The German photographer, noted for his unretouched images and preference for a “natural” beauty look, would shoot Patitz for the famous image, “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu,” in 1988, and again for British Vogue’s January 1990 supermodels cover. The prize was a trip to Paris and a limited-time contract. Born in Hamburg to an Estonian mother and German father, she moved with her family to Skanör, an idyllic seaside town in the South of Sweden when she was quite young.

Tatjana Patitz's agent told Insider that she died Wednesday morning and the cause of death was breast cancer.

She was a compassionate soul, kind and generous of heart and an avid advocate of animal rights. The statement from Nicolas referenced her devotion to both: "Needless to say, we are all devastated by her passing. It was there that Patitz got her modeling start, in a 1983 contest where she won third place, "I couldn't imagine my life without animals." German-born model rose to fame in the 1980s and later starred in George Michael's Freedom! '90 video.

It’s impossible not to admire her and over the years not to be just a little bit in love with her.” Outspoken, too, about the dangers the industry had on the new generation, in 2009 she told the Guardian: “It would be nice if models were allowed to be a more healthy weight – for the models, and for the young women who look up to them. She’s very soft, but at the same time she’s very strong and knows how to stand up for what she thinks, and it’s always very enriching to be with her. Known for his preference for a “natural” look and resistance to retouching images, the German photographer shot Patitz in his “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu,” for Vogue in 1988 before shooting her for the famous 1990 cover. Despite coming of age with some of the most famous models in the world – it was also in 1990 that Linda Evangelista claimed her cohorts wouldn’t wake up for less than $10,000 (£8,200) a day – Patitz was not interested in living in New York or Paris, instead buying a ranch on the west coast. The prize was a trip to Paris and a short-term contract.

She continued to work in fashion throughout her 40s and 50s, but she chose her projects "very selectively," she told Mercedes-Benz's 63Magazine in 2016, and on those projects would attempt to "combine my work as a model with my vocation as a protector of nature and animals." She was less present in the public eye than her contemporaries, and when she relocated to California rather than modeling hub New York, her legacy wasn't as widely acknowledged as theirs. When a supermodel dies early we lose the chance to see beauty at ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

We are meant to outgrow schoolboy crushes, but I cried this morning at the news of German supermodel Tatjana Patitz's death from breast cancer, aged 56.

[Patitz said in 2016](https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/beauty/how-the-fashion-world-woke-up-to-the-power-of-older-models-20161012-gs0usv.html), after appearing in a L’Oréal Paris advertising campaign alongside Helena Christensen and Andie MacDowell. She also appeared in lifestyle profiles with her son Jonah Johnson, 19, which often focused on her love of horses. Her name didn’t become a brand, like Elle (Macpherson), Claudia (Schiffer) and Kate (Moss), but that was part of the attraction. [Evangelista was the chameleon](https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/fashion/supermodel-linda-evangelista-has-nothing-to-hide-in-today-s-fashion-world-20220822-p5bbo4.html), Crawford the all-American pin-up, Campbell the trailblazer and Turlington perfection, according to the 90s standard of beauty – but Patitz was my favourite. You need to be able to look at a picture of a woman who’s your age and go ‘She’s hot and no, she does not look 39,’” Porizkova told “You need to be able to find yourself out there. “To be a size zero or a two when you’re tall is incredible to me. Both models had chosen an ageing route prioritising wrinkles over the pillow-faced appearance of filler devotees, with Patitz maintaining a healthy figure outside the confines of sample sizes. The indie aristocratic Tennant, who worked with Versace, Alexander McQueen and Chanel, never reached crush status, my heart was already taken, but I felt robbed. On the airbrushed surface there is very little for me to cry about. It was crush at first sight because of her almond-shaped eyes, symmetrical features, milkmaid skin and vowel-laden name.
