And she was like, “Well, how much are they paying you?” And I said, “Well, Avery, it’s not about the money honestly, it’s about the moral question of —” And she said, “Jerrod, enough of all that, how much are they paying you?” And I said, “$500,000.” And she said, “Boy, if you don’t put on a good suit and take some white people money —” So I said, “Stephen, I’m torn, I’ll be honest with you, I’m a little torn because, you know, one, it’s a great opportunity, thank you for the call, but I’m only being asked to host this, I know, because I’m Black.” And Stephen said, “Let me stop you right there, Jerrod.” He said, “You are being asked to host this show because you are talented. And I said to Avery, I said, “Avery, they asked me to host, and I said, you know, what should I do?” And she said, “Oh, bookie, I’m so proud of you, now remind me, which awards show is that again?” And I told her what the show was, and I told her about how last year didn’t air because of the no-Black-people thing. Stephen Hill is a great producer and he said, “Jerrod, really I’m honored to be making this phone call.” He said, “I’m producing the 80th Golden Globes, and it would be an honor if you would agree to join as the host.” I was like, “Whoa. I look out into this room and I see a lot of talented people — like, people that I admire, people that I would like to be like, and people that I’m jealous of and people that are really incredible artists. And I kind of forget that, like, where I’m from, like, we all live by a strict take-the-money mentality. “I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael,” the comedian began, “and I’ll tell you why I’m here. Like, one minute you’re making tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the Black face of an embattled white organization.” Life really comes at you fast, you know. “Regardless of whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate.” I’m here because I’m Black. Carmichael said he wasn’t interested, saying, “I know a trap when I hear a trap.” Noting that the group that gives out the Golden Globes had no Black members until recently, Jerrod Carmichael, the show’s host, said: “I’ll tell you why I’m here.

Host Jerrod Carmichael opened the show with a scathing monologue that skewered the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's racism scandal.

Assuming the organisation executes its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.” A tiny group full of quirky characters — and no Black members”, a scathing exposé of the 87 journalists who made up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. We are proud of the work we have done, the progress we have made, and the journey we are on. We commit to continue strengthening our partnership with Hollywood and with our worldwide fans, who celebrate — like we do — the best in film and television. The official HFPA guidelines explicitly state that members are not to accept gifts at a value greater than US$125. Thank you again for joining us, and thank you to our presenters, and congratulations to all our nominees and winners.” “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. Carmichael, perhaps paying homage to the flamethrower and former Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais, wasn’t done roasting his peers and biting the hand that feeds him, though. [January 11, 2023] So what was Carmichael — who famously came out as gay himself during his HBO stand-up special Rothaniel — insinuating, exactly, by drawing a direct link between the two seemingly unrelated actors? Hudson was, at the time of his death in 1985, arguably the most famous person to have died from the disease, and it wasn’t until he passed that his identity as a homosexual man was revealed. Rock Hudson was a matinee idol who rose to fame in the ‘50s as one of Hollywood’s leading men and sex symbols, until the (then) closeted actor’s life and career took an unexpectedly tragic turn when he was diagnosed with (and subsequently died from) AIDS. Just some quick housekeeping stuff, if you’re listening, if everyone’s listening,” Carmichael began.
