Koala Man TV Review (JoBlo.com)

We review Michael Cusack's animated superhero series Koala Man featuring the voices of Sarah Snook and Hugh Jackman.

Taking it upon himself to break out of the doldrums of everyday existence, Kevin dons a mask and a cape and adopts the alter ego of Koala Man. Much like Solar Opposites, this series brings a distinct voice to animation that will surprise many unfamiliar with the talent involved. There is an overarching narrative that connects the episodes but I found I was more interested in the throwaway gags than the plot of the series. Having watched the eight episodes of Koala Man made available for this review, I can say there are some truly bizarre and crazy storylines here that rival most adult animated productions. Inspired by his shorts, Koala Man is a curious little show that is profane, hilarious, and very weird in a way many Australian projects seem to be. Plot: “Koala Man” follows middle-aged dad Kevin and his titular not-so-secret identity, whose only superpower is a burning passion for following rules and snuffing out petty crime in the town of Dapto.

In an era where there are so many flawed caped crusaders – The Boys and Peacemaker being two prime examples – Kevin, his “shattered psyche” and domestic problems just doesn’t really feel like anything particularly innovative – or compelling. That means there will be no recycling and rubbish to collect kerbside on this day, a catastrophic state of affairs that unwittingly unleashes a monster that has been hidden in the town’s rubbish dump for 200 years. Inspiration for what he may be missing comes from his self-aggrandising boss – television fishing guru Big Greg (Hugh Jackman). * “Sometimes I think I’m the only thing standing between this town and anarchy,” he muses to himself.

'Koala Man' season 1 review: Making the mundane extreme (AIPT)

The next great superhero TV series is not from Marvel or DC, but from an unlikely place. Created by Michael Cusack (Smiling Friends, YOLO: Crystal Fantasy) ...

This all helps foreshadow the ending and the true identity of his nemesis, the Kookaburra. The series also explores the toll the superhero life takes on the ones closest to you. It’s endearing to see the family grow closer together as the season progresses. Both he and his alter ego are a stickler for the rules and are unwilling to compromise, even for the smallest of infractions. Because of his lack of powers, there are real stakes as he takes on a variety of enemies such as street level gangs and cannibals to larger cosmic dangers and invading forces. Though episodes stand on their own, it’s nice to include sprinkles towards the overall narrative tied to the big bad, the Kookaburra.

Koala Man – Season 1 Episode 6 "The Handies" Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

In Koala Man Season 1 Episode 6, Australia holds the handball Olympics, “The Handies,” with teenage athletes from across the country.

Alison is on the rise to popularity and power, Kevin has made strides in his relationship with Alison, and Vicky saved the town from its self-imposed cursed cycle. It turns out that the realm of the gods has boxes of Sick Sunnies, so she takes a stash of sunglasses back down to Dapto. She talks to him about her desire for Dapto to win. She can’t do that to Greg, but she will try to realize her own potential. To save Dapto from losing handball again, Vicky decides to end the curse. Koala Man tries to inspire Dapto students to try out for the team. She jumps at him, not to tear him apart, but to give him a hug. And he can turn Alison back after the Handball Olympics. The Legend of the Dapto Sick Sunnies says that the gods of Dapto once formed a luck charm called the Sick Sunnies of Dapto. They fought each other, causing the lab (and the fish) to explode. It does make her better at the game, but it also makes her transform into a dingo. When the Dapto team accidentally incinerates itself while lighting the torch, the town gathers to discuss what they are going to do.

'Koala Man' Review: Hulu Series Is Un-bear-able, Despite Hugh ... (IndieWire)

Hulu's Aussie animated comedy "Koala Man," created by Michael Cusack and Justin Roiland, is superficially strange but inherently familiar.

Each of these physical challenges helps instill a personal life lesson to Kevin or his family members: “A tall poppy,” for instance, is also an Australian custom of cutting down your successful fellow countrymen if it seems they’re growing too big for their britches (and that’s what Kevin thinks people are doing to Koala Man); the American speedsters’ beguiling rebelliousness challenges Kevin’s desire to instill obedience and order in his son; the intergalactic creature… [Hulu](https://www.indiewire.com/t/hulu/)’s new animated series “Koala Man” is squandered over its eight-episode first season. [Hugh Jackman](https://www.indiewire.com/t/hugh-jackman/)), deems beneath him. He battles a human-devouring flower (“a tall poppy”), American street-car racers, and an intergalactic creature so large it can have sex with planets. Like [last year’s “Little Demon,”](https://www.indiewire.com/2022/08/little-demon-review-fx-show-danny-devito-daughter-1234754569/) it’s another retread of the lame-dad sitcom that tries to hide its lack of imagination with increasingly silly circumstances and celebrity performers. Please don’t judge me!” Tall Poppy cries out in a soul-baring admission — and the Tradeys, a group of local skilled laborers who actually do have superpowers but are no match, of course, for Koala Man (and Vicky, Alison and Liam). and a killer theme song for his flashy, self-promoting Website, (“Fishing Big with Big Greg”). That’s the basic setup for “Koala Man,” as Kevin encounters various forms of menace, including a killer flower, “Tall Poppy” that was dumped in a Dopto landfill in 1821 and is now eating everything in sight (including humans) — “I know I’m addicted. It’s a hit-or-miss affair wrapped in a “Family Guy”-type animation style with enough absurdism and meta references that should appeal to the casual fan. The family harbors a big secret: Kevin is also Koala Man, a wannabe bumbling superhero with no superpowers and a habit of only making things worse with his civic-minded obsessions (like making sure his Dapto neighbors put their trash bins out on the correct day).

Koala Man Interview: Creator Michael Cusack on Juggling Shows ... (ComingSoon.net)

ComingSoon Senior Editor Spencer Legacy spoke with Koala Man creator Michael Cusack about developing the show.

Justin was so good at just being like, “Just do anything you want.” And I was like, “Are you sure you don’t want to look at the script before I do it? He messaged me out of the blue, I think it was at the height of Rick and Morty in Season 2, and he said, “Did I want to do this April Fool special?” I just couldn’t believe how lucky — I was like washing dishes at a restaurant at the time. I think it was a year and a half-ish, maybe, ago. I grew up with all that stuff so I feel like I owe them all something. I think Kevin and Maxwell are quite different and sometimes Liam can sound like Kevin and I’m always on top of that and redoing Liam lines and still trying to make him go higher, because he goes a bit too low sometimes. If anything, the network and the executives wanted to make it more Australian and we were able to do that because at the end of the day, the characters still have motivations and wants and needs and everything like that, so we could get away with doing weird stuff on the side. When it comes to those things, in the writer’s room, the Australians would bring up things that we felt were quite Australian and the American writers just loved it and ran with it and kind of expanded it. We realized that the weird stuff that is normal to us is kind of funny to Americans. I was also really pleasantly surprised to see Damo and Darren show up in the series. They’ve also got to sell it to — if it’s in a studio, they’ve got to sell it to a network. I am lucky enough to have a lot of talented animators and people around me that can ease the load. So it was in development hell for quite a few years, but yeah, we just stuck to it and it was good.

Exclusive: Koala Man Creator on How The Simpsons and Spider ... (MovieWeb)

Michael Cusack says he snuck Australian culture onto Hulu and hopes audiences resonate with the real-life hilarity of Koala Man.

I'm always a big fan of championing Australia and Australian oddities, and just the stuff I find funny, and putting it down to an international stage. Cusack: The thing I really loved about Spider-Man was the fact he was just a teenage kid, and that he was hiding his identity from the girl he likes—and then that contrast of, like, he's a dweeb when he's just himself and then when he's Spider-Man, it’s super attractive. Even as a kid, that was always a goal of mine because I loved The Simpsons. I love the fact that we kind of snuck Australia onto Hulu and onto American TV. He’s a completely different person to the girl he likes and it's colorful. Just a regular dad who was sick of people littering and people not respecting the suburb he loves. MW: Getting the right vibe across in eight episodes requires a lot of thought. And to have him in a midlife crisis and a wife who is kind of on the verge of a breakdown, and not putting up with what he's doing. Cusack: Kevin is an amalgamation of a lot of people, especially some of the “middle-aged” men in Australia I've run into—friends’ dads of friends of mine, or my own dad or uncles. I read The Simpsons and Futurama comics, and all those kinds of things, but never really vibed much with superheroes. I was never really into Batman and superheroes, and things like that when I was a kid. Cusack shared more about the series and some of its deeper nuances with MovieWeb.
