"A fair deal for this industry is making sure first off that when drivers go to work, they know that at the end of the day they're going to be able to go home to their family's safely." we never take lightly, and it's a last resort — we need to draw a line in the sand for the future of the industry," he said.

A bus strike is under way in Adelaide, causing major disruptions to the city's public transport network as many commuters return to work for 2023.

“Driving a bus used to be a good and sought-after job, but that’s not the case anymore. Bus drivers are leaving the industry in droves. Bus drivers from Torrens Transit have begun a 24-hour strike from 3am on Monday, with the Transport Workers Union and Torrens Transit preparing to hold talks on Tuesday.

Torrens Transit is the sole operator of the East-West, Outer North East (which includes the O-Bahn), and Outer North contract regions for Adelaide bus services. The union, which says it has more than 700 members working for Torrens Transit in a company workforce of more than 1000 people, is asking the employer to pay bus drivers more than $32 per hour. The company is also part of a three-way consortium, “Torrens Connect”, operating the North-South bus contract region, which includes the Adelaide CBD. Members of the Transport Workers Union this morning gathered at the Torrens Transit north-eastern bus depot in St Agnes as part of a 24-hour work stoppage, ahead of a meeting between the union and the company on Tuesday to resume negotiations on a new enterprise bargaining agreement.

A meeting between both parties is scheduled for Tuesday 10 January. Mr Smith continued to say that the action is not only advocating for “a fair deal and a better bus industry”, but also for “building a better bus network” for SA. The bus company says the strike will affect bus services in East-West, Outer North East (O-Bahn), North-South and Outer North.
