The radical attack on parliament by the far-right shares many parallels with the Capitol riots ignited by Donald Trump.

Then, the right tried to paint itself as democratic, non-violent and non-corrupt, and the left as driven by violent radicals. They want the riots to be seen as democracy at its best. But the extremism of those who stormed the country's democratic institutions has taken on a life of its own which will be hard to rein in. Following the rioting, Jair Bolsonaro took to Twitter to reject the accusation made by Lula that he had made several speeches encouraging the unrest in Brasilia. Jair Bolsonaro's divisive rhetoric and his questioning of the validity of Brazil's electoral system contributed in large part to the anger on display in Brazil on Sunday. Those who took part in the rioting are on the extreme end of the spectrum but there are many more opponents of Lula who spread false information about him and thereby fanned the flames which led to Sunday's events. Seeing Lula take office and move into the presidential palace was too much for those who routinely label him a "communist threat to Brazil".

The political system will want to isolate that radical movement and move away from it,” said Mario Sérgio Lima, political analyst at Medley Advisors. And videos showed limited presence of the capital’s military police. The leader of Bolsonaro’s own party called the uprising “an embarrassment”. Our January 8 – an unprecedented manifestation in Brazilian politics – is clearly copied from January 6 in the Capitol,” said Paulo Calmon, a political science professor at the University of Brasilia. Dino, the justice minister, referred to the encampments as incubators of terrorism. Two days before Lula’s January 1 inauguration, Bolsonaro flew to the US and took up temporary residence in Orlando. “We will not accept the path of criminality to carry out political fights in Brazil. Results from Brazil’s election – the closest in more than three decades – were quickly recognised by politicians across the spectrum, including some Bolsonaro allies, as well as dozens of governments. The monumental buildings’ interiors were left in states of ruin. Justice Minister Flávio Dino told reporters police have begun tracking those who paid for the buses that transported protesters to the capital.

Brazil capital attack complicates US relationship with Bolsonaro (The Guardian)

The former Brazilian president has taken up residence in Florida, and some Democrats are calling for his visa to be revoked.

Torres, who was fired on Sunday, claimed to be there on a family holiday and to have had no contact with Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro could then try to fight extradition and seek asylum in US courts, potentially triggering a prolonged legal battle. Bolsonaro arrived in Florida on 30 December when he was still president, in which case he could have entered on an A-1 visa reserved for foreign leaders. On Monday he was reported to have been admitted to hospital, complaining of “severe abdominal pains”. “Governor DeSantis and former president Trump’s presence at Mar-a-Lago have both made Florida a place where these things seem to happen, so I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the planning for this had happened in Florida.” “We stand with Brazil as it safeguards its democratic institutions.

'Bottles, glass, bullets': inside the wreckage of Brazil's failed coup (The Guardian)

Rioters stormed Brazil's congress, leaving a bizarre trail of destruction and fury in their wake.

Amorim, who is Brazil’s former defense minister, said he was struggling to fathom how security forces and intelligence agencies had failed to detect or stop the threat. The mob failed to access the offices of president Lula but other rooms were looted and smashed. Nearby, the entrance to the offices of the senate’s current president, Rodrigo Pacheco, looked like a bank that had been targeted by ram-raiders. Chairs were hurled from the broken windows and rioters tried to torch a sofa. “I came, I won,” said one daubed slogan. A knife had been taken to portraits of former senate presidents Renan Calheiros and José Sarney.
