Football: Nine-man Wellington Phoenix survive two late penalties to ... (New Zealand Herald)

Ufuk Talay's side had for 70 minutes been relatively comfortable in defending the early 1-0 lead that Oskar Zawada seized against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

Except, that safety lasted only a couple of moments, before Evans was again pointing to the spot. After earning their first point of the season earlier in the week, the Phoenix threatened to become the first side this season to take points from United, who have begun life in the A-League Women with six wins from six. However, after showing yellow to Burgess, Evans flashed red to Pennington. Earlier in the day, the Phoenix women produced a meritorious defensive performance of their own but fell 1-0 to Western United in Melbourne. Still, with nine men on the pitch, the Phoenix had looked like holding their lead and escaping with their first clean sheet of the season. The Wellington Phoenix have overcome two red cards, a pair of stoppage-time penalties and, toughest of all, referee Shaun Evans to somehow earn their first away win of the season.

Nine-man 'Nix claim ALM win over Sydney (The West Australian)

Two missed penalties from Adam Le Fondre have handed Wellington Phoenix a 1-0 win over Sydney FC in the A-League Men.

"I didn't think there was intent (from Kraev) to go in and hurt the player," said Talay, whose side claimed their first win over Sydney since 2018. The Wellington boss claimed the decision to send Kraev off was "soft" and wasn't convinced Sydney's penalties were warranted. After the Sydney midfielder had been ruled out with a concussion, the Sky Blues were trying to get a substitute on and Zawada finished past Andrew Redmayne in the 10th minute.

ALW Match Report: Western United 1-0 Wellington Phoenix (Western United FC)

Western United kept its perfect record in the Liberty A-League Women intact with a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.

Wellington increased the pressure in the final 10 minutes and swung a number of dangerous looking balls into the box, but Hillary Beall was on hand to rid any danger and helped United see out the win, keeping the Green and Black at the top of the table. In the end the goal came from a rather simple source as Taranto floated a deep free kick towards the penalty area, and Vlajnic was rewarded for her impact with another headed chance, this time putting the ball the right side of the post to take the lead. Vlajnic was involved again around the hour mark, this time with her opposite right foot with a strike that fizzed into the keeper’s midriff as United continued to toil fruitlessly in search of the opening goal.
