The film is grounded in an original idea by The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. As well as appearing in the Fox X-Men franchise films as Hank/Beast, Hoult’s big screen presence has seen him take on more mature roles in Those Who Wish Me Dead and The Banker in recent years. Hoult’s Renfield is depicted as the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Cage).

The big news about the movie is that Cage plays Renfield’s terrible boss Dracula, which is a very exciting development but also feels like it should have happened already? (Just because I love Dracula so much I just have to drop in a little bit of lit crit for a second and say that even in the novel, not much is known about him—even how he came to be Dracula’s slave when he is stuck in a sanitorium in England and there is no reference to an Englishman visiting Castle Dracula prior to Jonathan Harker’s trip. Does Renfield have anything meaningful to say about bloodsucking masters and put-upon factotums beyond the joke of its premise?

Say this!'" Jones continued, "He pitched me a line, a joke to say, and it was really, really cool just to see him so in it and fun, and having the time of his life." And I watched this man come in to work, sit in the make-up trailer, get all made up as Dracula, and then show up on set and was so excited, and so -- oh my god, I almost got a little emotional because it was really moving to see someone love the craft so much. By the end of the conversation with our own Perri Nemiroff, Jones spoke a little bit about

Also, the camp potential of portraying Cage as the “classic” Bela Lugosi-inspired Dracula but in a straight contemporary context is HIGH. I am super into all of this, but I am especially into rendering Dracula in black-and-white, that’s just a fun visual touch, and I am into the way Renfield shouts “No!” when Dracula comes into the community center for group therapy. He’s one of cinema’s best silly boys, he’s a great actor with PHENOMENAL timing and delivery, and he commits to playing idiots, losers, fops, and wastrels better than anyone (see also: The Great, in which he plays all four of those things at once).

One aspect of Renfield that's apparent from the trailer is that the character is, at best, a reluctant servant for Dracula. Instead of focusing solely on Dracula, Renfield is about the vampire's human familiar, a vessel to lure Dracula's victims. Directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War), Renfield is the latest reimagining of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, with the titular vampire played by Nicolas Cage.
