TCU shocks Michigan, becomes first Big 12 team to make CFP title ... (ESPN Australia)

In the biggest upset since the advent of the College Football Playoff, third-seeded TCU rode its underdog status to a 51-45 win over undefeated and No.

All season, the most points Michigan had given up in an entire game was 27, and going back to last season, the most the Wolverines had surrendered in a game was 37. McCarthy](http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4433970/jj-mccarthy) threw a telegraphed pass to the outside that was picked off by sophomore safety [Bud Clark](http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4430262/bud-clark) and returned for a touchdown. They could get only one, and the Wolverines had 52 seconds to go 75 yards and make a miracle happen. Johnston sped his way to the sideline and took it 76 yards to the end zone to put the Frogs back up 10. The Frogs needed two first downs to finish the game with the ball in their hands. After Michigan cut the TCU lead to three points early in the fourth quarter, Duggan, as he has done all season, responded by making the throw of the game. The touchdown culminated a 10-play, 83-yard drive that gave the Frogs a commanding 21-6 halftime lead and put the Wolverines in their biggest deficit of the season. While Michigan struggled to capitalize, on the other side of the ball, Duggan -- the Heisman runner-up -- was pulling out all the stops. [Emari Demercado](http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4362478/emari-demercado) who broke loose for a 69-yard run that Duggan finished off with another 1-yard touchdown sneak. Under coach Jim Harbaugh, Michigan had allowed more than 14 points in the first quarter and gone on to win just once, in 2016 against Colorado, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Live updates from the College Football Playoff semifinal game: No. 2 Michigan (13-0) vs. No. 3 TCU (12-1) at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

McCarthy tried to pass to the right flat, but TCU safety Bud Clark stepped in front of the receiver and took the interception back 41 yards to put the Horned Frogs up 7-0 with 9:22 left in the quarter. On the first play from scrimmage Donovan Edwards busted off a 54-yard run to the TCU 21. The Horned Frogs scored on a 6-yard pass from Max Duggan to Taye Barber with a successful point after. The ball bounced into the end zone where it was recovered by TCU for a touchback. On second down at the 5, Duggan called his own number again and ran to the 2, then sneaked for one yard and the first down. In second quarter, Michigan got itself on the board with a 42-yard field goal from Jake Moody. The Wolverines attempted a 2-point conversion but failed to leave the score 34-22. Michigan capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by Kalel Mullings and a 2-point conversion from quarterback J.J. A heroic effort to keep the play alive ended short of the first down. A rare 3-and-out by TCU and a 40-yard punt put Michigan in business at its 44 with 6:30 left. McCarthy’s pass to the right flat intended for Donovan Edwards was deflected by safety Millard Bradford, and that left one final play for the Wolverines. McCarthy scrambled for 5 yards on first down, then overshot Roman Wilson and nearly saw the pass intercepted by a slipping Emari Demercado.

Behind standout play from Max Duggan and two touchdowns off interception returns, TCU defeated Michigan 51-45 to advance to the national championship game.

TCU (13-1), the most unlikely team to ever reach the four-team playoff in its nine-year history, has one more game left in its improbable season and it will come against either No. The play was clean. Duggan and the Frogs will no doubt be underdogs — again. After the Frogs and Wolverines combined for 62 points in 20 second-half minutes, the pace was throttled back. Max Duggan accounted for four touchdowns, Texas Christian returned two interceptions for scores and the third-ranked Horned Frogs withstood a frenetic second-half surge by No. Back came the Frogs, unleashing their best weapon.

TCU holds off Michigan rally with big plays in wild second half to win ... (AZCentral.com)

Every time Michigan made a run in the second half, TCU responded and was able to hold on for the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl win.

His sack for a seven-yard loss stalled Michigan at the TCU 49. He kept the pressure on TCU with a 5-yard TD pass that cut the score to 51-45 with 3:18 to play. The ball rolled back and out of bounds another five yards to the Michigan 37 with 24 seconds left. Then, after Michigan got the ball back with 53 seconds left, Horton had another sack that caused a fumble. From his 49, McCarthy launched a deep pass to Roman Wilson, who had gotten behind the secondary. Nobody could catch him for the 76-yard touchdown and it gave TCU a needed 10-point cushion after Michigan had fought back from a 34-16 deficit to make it 41-38. He threw a 34-yard TD pass to Ronnie Bell for Michigan's first touchdown midway through the third quarter. Next play, McCarthy handed the ball off to Kalel Mullings, who lost it. He finished with 150 yards and a score on 17 carries and Miller had run for 57 yards on eight carries. McCarthy (343 passing yards) bounced back from the two interceptions that TCU returned for touchdowns with big plays with his arm and legs. But TCU had one more big play, and held off the Wolverines. "I thought we were the more physical team on the field tonight.

No problem for a team with the nation’s best offensive line, right? 200/1 underdogs stun sporting world (NEWS.com.au)

The College Football Playoff has delivered so many duds that it makes you forget it can deliver something like this.

The Horned Frogs finished last season 5-7 and missed a bowl for the third straight year. And Michigan had little answer for the Horned Frogs’ physicality. Michigan came in as a heavy favourite, the conventional wisdom being that the better-tested Wolverines could use their physical run game to push around TCU. From there, TCU scored 20 more points in the third quarter and Michigan scored nine, fighting back multiple times when the game looked over. McCarthy led the Wolverines on a nine-play, 56-yard drive, ending in a Wilson touchdown, to bring the score to 51-45. Michigan (13-1) pulled within 41-38 two plays into the fourth quarter after Emari Demercado’s fumble set up a Roman Wilson score and a Ronnie Bell two-point conversion.

With a kiss from a (Horned) Frog, the CFP gets its first stunner (The Washington Post)

TCU, unranked at the start of the season, shocked Michigan, 51-45, in the Fiesta Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff championship game.

Michigan menaced Duggan sometimes, like the time he flipped it around the rush to Taye Barber for a six-yard touchdown on which Barber eased inside the right pylon. Duggan took TCU on drives of 76 yards in 12 plays and 83 in 10, both drives steeped in a variety Michigan couldn’t hack. Michigan went 69 yards in three plays, TCU 78 in three, Michigan 75 in three and Michigan 27 in two after a TCU fumble. Michigan wriggled from 21-3 to 21-16 in the third quarter, and Duggan, the TCU quarterback and Heisman finalist with vessels rich in grit, promptly went 46 yards to the deep right to Johnston, starting a six-play, 75-yard drive. Of course, Michigan did spend the first half appearing to swirl partway down the drain even during moments of evident prosperity. McCarthy to wreak a muff and a busted play, it had come to sort of figure. Michigan fans even had the rare experience of feeling absolutely certain of defeat and then having welcome uncertainty return. The 71,723-strong sides of State Farm Stadium, the TCU-aligned in purple and the Michigan mass in maize and blue, each had turns to practice hysteria. Against a defense ranked fourth in the nation and allowing 277 yards per game and 4.5 yards per play, TCU gained 488 and seven yards per snap. It’s a program not only from outside the kingdoms but from outside the outside of the kingdoms. They kept their sense of belonging through a preposterous third quarter in which Michigan (13-1) rang up 24 points but TCU chimed in with a helpful 20. A Michigan team more accustomed to law and order found itself wading in a damned mess.

First, McCarthy found Bell on a corner route for 43 yards, setting up a field goal to cut TCU’s lead to 21-9. A pair of McCarthy throws to Bell brought Michigan back into the game at the start of the third quarter. The Horned Frogs’ lead got back to 13, after another TCU field goal, before Michigan mounted its last scrambling attempt at a comeback. At the end, purple confetti rained down on State Farm Stadium after TCU scored a monumental 51-45 upset over Michigan in an utterly mad, wildly brilliant Fiesta Bowl.

TCU out-duels Michigan in highest-scoring Fiesta Bowl in history (Arizona Sports)

Scoring didn't let up Saturday, as TCU earned a trip to the National Championship in the final football game at State Farm Stadium in 2022.

“Our ability to stop the run, I think, was the difference in the ballgame. They leaned on a hugely productive running game and won in the trenches. But the thing we did over and over and over again was answer.” “Our ability to run the ball, we almost out-rushed Michigan for 100 yards. Johnston was named offensive MVP with six grabs for 163 yards and the touchdown. Duggan finished 14-for-29 with 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns and interceptions each. “I think that’s kind of our mindset, which helped us kind of fight through some of the momentum swings.” It was wild, just big play after big play and big play, momentum swing. But the fireworks didn’t yield. On fourth down, a fumbled snap and wild chase with laterals ended Michigan’s prayer. In the third quarter, 44 points were scored but 41 of those occurred halfway through the period. 9, a dramatic turnaround after going 16-18 over the past three seasons.

Georgia vs. TCU worthy of a Hollywood CFP national title game (Los Angeles Times)

College football's national championship game between top-ranked Georgia and a never-give-up TCU squad will provide plenty of L.A.-caliber entertainment.

As of 2011, TCU was a member of the Mountain West Conference, just trying to play its way into the Power Five under program architect Gary Patterson. Georgia, TCU advance to 2023 College Football Playoff National ... (NFL.com)

Georgia and TCU were victorious in national semifinal games on Saturday, punching their tickets to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Ringo was a hero of last year's national-championship game, with a pick-six to finish off the Crimson Tide, but his struggles this season were on display in the SEC title game and playoff semifinal. Can he make plays against the physicality and athleticism of Jones? That lack of mass will hurt Winters' NFL projection, but his sideline-to-sideline range and hitting ability will be appreciated by teams in the early Day 3 range. Horton also had a huge effort in the Big 12 Championship Game with two sacks, so he's a prospect whose arrow is pointing up. On the positive side, he chased down Marvin Harrison Jr., arguably the best receiver in college football, and punched the ball out for a fumble. For much of the game against Ohio State, Bennett was having a tough go of it, with an interception, a few near picks and some shakiness against pressure. Ringo had a rough game against the Buckeyes. Johnston started slowly in the Fiesta Bowl against Michigan but caught fire eventually, making grabs of 32, 46 and 76 yards. He led Georgia on scoring drives of 62, 76 and 72 yards in the fourth quarter, making some NFL-quality throws late in the game. When Morris suffered a knee injury against Colorado in the opener, Duggan -- who had started for three years prior -- took over again. Appreciation from NFL evaluators has grown over time because of his toughness, experience and football IQ, and he could be a Day 3 pick. Neither is a perfect prospect -- far from it -- but each has tangible and intangible qualities that will offer some appeal on the next level.
