Confined to the bench are the likes of Raphinha, Memphis Depay and Ansu Fati, who are still struggling to convince Xavi that they deserve to form part of his first XI. Expected to start for the former midfielder is goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and a flat back four of Jordi Alba, Marcus Christensen, World Cup finalist Jules Kounde and Alejandre Balde. With a full squad at his disposal, however, Barca's first team coach Xavi Hernandez said that his men are "motivated after a month and a half without competition, especially the staff".

Mateu handed out 15 bookings, including the two second yellow cards, in the Catalan derby. Espanyol goalkeeper Álvaro Fernández, recalled by Martínez to the starting lineup for the first time since October, impressed with key saves down the final stretch. Joselu stepped up to the penalty spot and drilled his shot down the middle beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen. They are generous in helping one another and stick to the plan even when things are not going our way. Espanyol criticized the decision, taken a day before the game, saying it caused “irreparable harm.” But dropping points at home against a side just one point above the relegation zone was not in coach Xavi Hernández’s plans.

Barcelona fail to pull away from Real Madrid after feisty Espanyol draw (The Guardian)

Real Sociedad moved up to third, nine points off the top two, with a 2-0 home win over Osasuna. Regardless, that his substitutes only serve to destabilize the team should be worrying for Xavi. The second one came following a foul and he said something to Lahoz as Barcelona was preparing the wall. Barcelona started the game with Ansu Fati and Raphinha on the wings. The first one came following the penalty where, for some reason, he took exception to the way the Espanyol players celebrated. Much of the talk is going to focus on the decisions made by Lahoz. One of the calling cards for Barcelona since Xavi Hernandez took over is not being able to put a game away.

Barcelona 1-1 Espanyol: Two red cards, late saves and VAR chaos ... (Eurosport.com)

A chaotic Barcelona derby ended 1-1 at the Camp Nou on Saturday as a penalty from Joselu cancelled out a first-goal from Marcos Alonso.

Alvaro Fernandez (Espanyol) - The visiting goalkeeper made five stops during the match, most in the first half when Barcelona were dominating but it was the two late in the second half which won him the award. Even if it is not a straight red card offence, it would be his second yellow card. Barcelona cannot blame their failure to win on him, this was due to erratic finishing and a fine goalkeeping performance, but they will surely hope he is not in charge of them in major matches this season. He slotted down the middle as ter Stegen moved to his left. As crazy a refereeing performance as you will see - The world got to see the erratic nature of Mateu Lahoz when he dished out ten yellow cards (including one second yellow to Denzel Dumfries) in the Argentina-Netherlands quarter-final. Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz appeared to have sent off two Espanyol players only for VAR to intervene after some delay to reduce it to just one.
