Before Friday’s crash, 293 people died on Queensland roads, including 135 drivers, 42 passengers, 29 pedestrians and 73 motorbike riders. Police closed the road in the aftermath of the crash. The three occupants of the other car – a man and two women – were trapped in a silver Mercedes-Benz. Late on Friday, police confirmed they were investigating allegations the wagon was spotted being driven dangerously in the lead-up to the crash. Three people in the other vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene while Ms Taufua – the sole occupant of the wagon which burst into flames after the crash – was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital. “Police provided lights and sirens and attempted to intercept this vehicle, however the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle evaded police, and police made the decision because of the conduct of the driver not to engage in a pursuit. Emergency services were called to the collision around 5pm Friday on Bonogin Rd in Bonogin, with the silver Mercedes knocked from the road into a power pole, trapping the driver and two passengers. All three occupants of a silver Mercedes, two women and a man from the same family, died at the scene of the collision, while Uiatu “Joan” Taufua, the mother of Broncos forward Payne Haas and sole occupant of the other vehicle, was taken to hospital with “numerous fractures” but in a stable condition.
