NBA Odds: Lakers-Heat prediction, odds and pick - 12/28/2022 (ClutchPoints)

Their three-headed guard attack of Kyle Lowry (18 points), Tyler Herro (14 points), and Max Strus (19 points) led the way. The 6’11” big man stepped in for the injured Adebayo and performed admirably. He scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the win. The three didn’t shoot well from three (combined 7-24 from three) but did a great job scoring and creating shots for others. Miami hasn’t lived up to preseason expectations but still finds itself firmly in the mix in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The Heat are 11-21-2 against the spread while 50% of their games have gone over. Russ scored 15 points in the win on 6-11 shooting. The Lakers are 13-21 against the spread while 62% of their games have gone over. The Lakers have been a dumpster fire since star Anthony Davis went down with an injury, but a big win in Orlando last night gives LA a great formula on how they can cover the spread tonight. Bryant scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the win. He was a force all night – terrorizing the Magic frontcourt en route to four offensive rebounds. The big man averages just 10.9 PPG and 5.5 RPG for the season.

Three Things to Know: Lakers at Heat 12-28-22 (Lakers.com)

L.A.’s best remedy to that is represented by LeBron – if he’s able to play – who scored 33 points with 11 boards and four assists in last season’s 113-107 loss at Miami, was a DNP in 2020-21, and went for 28 points, 12 assists, and nine boards in a 113-110 win on Dec. in the 2020 NBA Finals, with the exception of a few players, while only LeBron and (injured) Anthony Davis remain for the Lakers. Miami, having finished last regular season 53-29, good for first in the East, haven’t been able to sustain that level of winning thus far in 2022-23, ranking 9th with their 17-17 margin. The Heat, meanwhile, are 3-0 with a rest advantage against a team that played the previous night. “It’s contagious, like you saw tonight.” “Making sure we came out with a competitive defensive focus,” added Darvin Ham.

And I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championships,” James said directly. I think about the day to day of how we get better throughout the course of the season. “I’m a winner and I want to win. Because of the extension, he’s ineligible to be traded until after this season. He can become a free agent before the 2024 season by declining an approximate $50 million option. But how we get better from game to game,” he said.

The Lakers entered having been outscored by 3.4 points per game in the third, worst in the league. Miami’s 26.3 average third quarter point total is third worst in the league. Miami is three games back of No. Miami then stiffened defensively but the Lakers also missed several open shots. Only Washington is worse in that area (minus 3.4). And Miami then survived a fourth quarter letdown. Lowry missed 13 games last season because of a family issue that he wishes not to discuss publicly but said “kinda derailed my whole season.” This absence was related to that family issue. Then he sealed it with a short jumper that put the Heat up 12 with 1:15 to go. Davis - who’s averaging 27 points and 12 rebounds - is out indefinitely with a foot injury. “His versatility is vital to our group,” Spoelstra said of Martin. Got to get back to the gym [and work on] that.” “We got to work the last couple days.”

Miami held a 95-78 lead through three quarters before the Lakers finally showed some defensive chops. That leaves James and the Lakers continuing to spin their wheels on the court, with remaining games in Atlanta and Charlotte to finish out a five-game road trip. James has been listed on the injury report for most of the season, and he was even questionable against the Heat leading up to Wednesday’s game. This year’s team has a weaker record than either of the previous two and is ranked 25th in net rating (minus-1.7). In the meantime, the Lakers have been slow to act on the trade front: While many of their offseason additions became trade-eligible on Dec. 15, the league only usually unleashes a flurry of deals close to the deadline, which falls on Feb. They’ve since struggled to remake the roster with competent supporting pieces around James and Davis, who haven’t found consistent on-court chemistry with Westbrook either. “I think about that I don’t want to finish my career playing at this level from a team aspect,” James said. Miami managed 92 shot attempts to the Lakers’ 77, and while James matched his longtime rival Jimmy Butler with 27 points, the Heat also got 23 points from Bam Adebayo and 18 points from Tyler Herro. And I know it takes steps to get there, but once you get there and know how to get there, playing basketball at this level just to be playing basketball is not in my DNA. On Wednesday night, James made the most pointed comments yet about the Lakers, who are 14-21 and in 13th place in the Western Conference, making it clear that with his 38th birthday approaching on Friday, he’s not content with anything less than a contender. Even at his age, James is averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists while shooting 49.8% from the field – unprecedented production for a player this deep into his NBA career. The Lakers’ fourth-quarter fire did not come soon enough in a 112-98 loss to the Heat, well after their best player was already exhausted trying to keep up.

LeBron James's patience is wearing thin as Lakers lag in standings (The Washington Post)

LeBron James wants to spend the twilight of his Hall of Fame career contending for championships again, not going through the motions on a losing team.

“I want to win and give myself a chance to win and still compete for championships. [choosing to maximize his flexibility this summer](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/07/25/lebron-james-contract-extension-lakers/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12), though, James [signed a two-year, $97 million extension with the Lakers](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/08/17/lebron-james-lakers-extension/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12) in August. Even so, the Lakers have yet to make any trades this season to acquire the necessary athleticism, size and wing depth to keep up with the league’s best. “I’m a winner and I want to win,” James said. With Davis sidelined indefinitely, though, there’s a strong argument to hold tight until the summer, when Russell Westbrook’s $47 million salary comes off the books, thereby giving the Lakers greater flexibility to pursue higher-level trade targets and free agents. But James is in danger of missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, something he hasn’t experienced since his first two years in the NBA. By comparison, the Washington Wizards won 37 games each in 2001-2002 and 2002-03 during Michael Jordan’s oft-overlooked final chapter. Perhaps it wasn’t a coincidence that James, who turns 38 on Friday, had championship contention on his mind while playing in Miami, where he won two of his four titles and made four straight Finals appearances from 2011 to 2014. My body is going to be okay. [While his game has shown signs of slippage](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/11/10/lebron-james-groin-injury-lakers/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12), James remains one of the NBA’s top players as he closes in on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record, averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists this season. I think about how I don’t want to finish my career playing at this level from a team aspect. After failing to reach the playoffs last season, Los Angeles sits in the West’s 13th playoff spot, 8½ games back of the top-seeded New Orleans Pelicans.
