England leg spinner Rehan Ahmed becomes youngest debutant to ... (ABC News)

Eighteen-year-old England leg spinner Rehan Ahmed is just a few months younger than Pat Cummins was when he took 6-79 on debut against South Africa in 2011.

Ahmed later removed Mohammad Rizwan with a perfect leg-break delivery. With two days of play remaining, England need 55 runs to win the Test and become the first Test team to complete a 3-0 whitewash in Pakistan, having won the first two Tests in Rawalpindi and Multan. England leg spinner Rehan Ahmed has become the youngest man to take five wickets in an innings on Test debut, putting his team on course for a comfortable victory in the third and final Test against Pakistan in Karachi.

English spinner Rehan Ahmed has created history, becoming the youngest player to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut.

“If he can get the leg break to turn a bit more, fantastic. Tears for the old boy in the stand .. It’s just one of those things where we see these people for the first time on the big stage and you go ‘what‘s going to make them the complete package’. If he can‘t, I don’t think it makes a massive amount of difference. Dreams really do come true .. But though Shakeel survived the hat-trick ball amid a cage of vultures, and formed one half of a battling 110-run fightback alongside Babar, there was simply no escaping the sense of destiny that appears to be following Ahmed and this England team. The 37-year-old is a player whose service to Pakistan has been immense, not just through 7,000-plus Test runs and 19 centuries but as one of the central pillars of the team that spent 10 years in exile yet rose to No 1 in the rankings in 2016. Leach had set things in motion in the morning, claiming the first of three victims in six balls when Shan Masood attempted a reverse sweep on 24 and under-edged on to leg stump. As England offered handshakes, and teammates formed a guard of honour at the boundary’s edge, Azhar wiped a tear from his eye. Babar’s demise during Ahmed’s second over was galling for a captain surely hearing the whispers about his future, rocking back and slapping a long-hop to Ollie Pope at midwicket on 54. The tourists wanted it done in one, raiding a frankly bewildering 112 for two from 17 overs in the gloaming, leaving only 55 more to whittle off on day four.

Crawley and Duckett plundered 87 runs off 69 balls before mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed grabbed two late wickets. England players applauded and shook hands with Azhar before he took the final guard with his wife and two sons among a sparse crowd at the National Stadium. Shakeel followed up his three previous half-centuries in his maiden Test series with another defiant 50 before he top-edged a sweep against Ahmed and was caught by Leach at square leg. Rehan Ahmed (5-48) ripped through Pakistan after Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel shared a good third wicket partnership. England need 55 runs to win the Test ...

I have been working on my leg-spinner [which dismissed Rizwan] for the last two months so it was nice to get that through. You bowl better balls and don't get wickets, so to get him is great. I should have played straight. I was warming up for three hours. The 37-year-old's appearance was short-lived as he was bowled by Leach for a four-ball duck and left the field to a guard of honour. Earlier in the day, Babar Azam (54) and Saud Shakeel (53) forced England to toil in the field after lunch, with a 110-run partnership taking them to 164-3.

Rehan Ahmed, putting the game in super fast forward (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Eighteen-year old is already emerging as a difference-maker for an England team full of them.

He was back out as quickly as he walked off for his Nighthawk duties, and didn't hang around out in the middle. The joy, both his and that of his team-mates, was proof of that. A second brisk exit came, this one much angrier at failing to connect for a third four, before he was bouncing into media duties and then out of our lives again. So to get one to spin a little bit the other side, it was great." The fifth was no bunny, though: Agha Salman the next to be done by bounce on a flat-bat shot, caught by Harry Brook at short leg. Just like that, a trio of accomplished batters were chiselled out in the space of 17 balls from Rehan. That he described the first wicket of the five as "God-sent" said it all. A smart legbreak drew the wicketkeeper-batter forward before dipping shorter than he had anticipated and pitching wider than he had calculated. And then, with one of the worst balls he has bowled, he broke them up. Stokes, irked, had indulged in one of his self-flagellation spells of eight overs on the bounce with little of note beyond a couple of plays and misses. Pakistan had been skittled for 216, giving England a target of 167 for a series sweep which now sees them need just 55 when they resume on day four, with eight wickets in hand having only had 17 overs before the light took them to stumps on Monday. "I think we would have as well if we had the last seven overs of the day."

'Stuff dreams are made of': 18yo debutant breaks Pat Cummins record as England pile on pain.

His father was watching on from the grandstand, with his wild clapping and cheering quickly turning to tears of joy. “If he can get the leg break to turn a bit more, fantastic. It’s just one of those things where we see these people for the first time on the big stage and you go ‘what‘s going to make them the complete package’. “He (Kumble) took hundreds of Test match wickets without ripping a leg break,” Butcher told Sky Sports. They’ll just be talking about wickets. But former England batter Mark Butcher pointed out Indian spin legend Anil Kumble, who sits fourth on the all-time Test wicket-takers list with 619 scalps from 132 matches, rarely turned the ball across his storeyed career. If he can‘t, I don’t think it makes a massive amount of difference. But it was Rehan’s delivery to Mohammad Rizwan four overs later that had commentators delighted. “But one thing that the wrist spinner can do that finger spinners can‘t do – and the reason why teams always want them in these sorts of conditions – is because you can land it on the flat bit and make the ball spin because there’s a lot more revs on it when it comes out spun by the wrist then there is when it’s spun by the fingers.” Making his debut at 18 years and 126 days old, Rehan Ahmed had Pakistan in a spin on the third day of the third Test in Karachi, claiming three wickets in six overs on his way to 5-48. Rehan then removed Shakeel, who was out for 53 after mistiming a sweep shot of a Rehan googly, with the ball ballooning to Jack Leach at square leg to leave Pakistan 6-177 at tea. With a 100-plus run partnership between Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel putting Pakistan in control at 3-164, Rehan removed Babar – albeit via a long-hop delivery the captain smashed in the air and straight to Ollie Pope at mid-wicket to be dismissed for 54.

Brendon McCullum talks up Rehan Ahmed ahead of IPL auction (ESPNcricinfo.com)

England coach says "it would be awesome" if young spinner were to get picked up.

They can change the game and we've seen that in that spell yesterday afternoon when he came in and bowled us to victory. Asked if he would like to see Rehan given more opportunities in the Championship, McCullum told Sky Sports: "You can't force anyone to do anything. "The important thing for Rehan is that we continue to look after him. [Rehan had been "inundated" with offers from franchise leagues](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/england-lions-in-uae-2022-rehan-ahmed-mentally-ready-if-fast-track-development-leads-to-england-call-1342145)for the 2022-23 season and that "English cricket has a real responsibility to manage him carefully". The more we're prepared to do that, the more we can discover how talented people are and how much they can grow on the big stage as well. There is rarely much demand for overseas spinners at the auction, but Rehan's low price point and huge potential could convince a franchise to take a punt on him.

Ahmed's England rise a fairytale - Henderson (BBC Sport)

Rehan Ahmed's rise with England has been a "fairytale" that Leicestershire want to help the teenager continue to write.

I think he finds bowling quite easy, but his batting is fantastic and he will be a genuine all-rounder." It is with the bat that many at Leicestershire predict Ahmed to impress with further. Stuart Broad, James Taylor and Harry Gurney were among the list of recent players to go up the A46 to Trent Bridge and break into the England set-up as Notts players after starting at Leicestershire. He is a massive part of our first-team and will be for years to come." "The time for him to be part of the England set up is great, with a new coach and captain, and playing that positive cricket which is the brand he wants to play. "It's a fairytale story, he has got a lot of confidence, is full of energy and likes a challenge."

It took some courage from Stokesy and a few people to thrust him into this opportunity. Ahmed already has a deal to play in the inaugural ILT20 in the UAE in January and February, where he will represent Andy Flower's Gulf Giants alongside a number of fellow England stars including Ollie Pope, Chris Jordan and James Vince. "He's got a real future," McCullum added. I've been involved with the IPL a couple of times so sometimes it works out for guys and sometimes it doesn't.
