Many Jews of colour come from far and wide, from India, China, Ethiopia, among others, and celebrate Hanukkah with local cuisines.

As with dosas, it is not so much that these foods are traditionally associated with Hanukkah but that they could provide Black Jews with a way to celebrate African and Jewish aspects of their heritage with a food fried in oil. “Puri are fried in oil,” she said, and all of a sudden we had a Hanukkah party, with a menorah lighting and fried food. For most American Jews, these are indeed important holiday foods, replete with memories – both of their heavy, greasy deliciousness and of the smells that permeate the house for days after a latke fry. That Eastern European culture, however, is only one of many Jewish cultures around the world. Each year, the holiday starts with just the shamas and one of the eight candles and ends, on the last night, with the entire menorah lit up. Today, Jews light the menorah, a candelabra with eight candles – and one “helper” candle, called a shamas – to remember the Hanukkah oil, which kept the Jerusalem temple’s everlasting lamp burning brightly.

This is the antisemitism that — at a time of peak identity politics on- and off-campus — seeks to While the meaning of the holiday has evolved, perhaps Hanukkah’s most important and enduring lesson is that for the Jewish people, maintaining freedom can be as great a struggle as achieving it. Countering the latter type of antisemitism is not as simple as installing metal detectors and vehicle barriers. The various types and tactics of antisemitism have something else in common: They should be fought together. The first includes the broad spectrum of physical threats to Jews and Jewish institutions. These are just some of the gravest incidents on a long list that includes many more occurrences of assaults on Jews and vandalism and arson at synagogues, schools and other Jewish institutions across the country. In the West, the timing of Hanukkah also allows Jews to take part in the cheer of the Christmas holiday season with a festival uniquely their own. [intimidate Jewish college students and faculty](https://www.adl.org/resources/report/schooled-hate-anti-semitism-campus) from expressing their Jewish identity, including voicing their support for Jewish self-determination. The need to provide such physical security is outrageous. It is less focused on Jews’ physical security and instead seeks to undermine their social, academic and employment security. Considering antisemitism’s motives is important in the politically tribal atmosphere prevalent in America. The significance of Hanukkah has evolved over the past century.

Mostly under the influence of the Zionist thinker Max Nordau, they wanted to create a “muscular Judaism.” In the early decades of the Zionist movement, the founders and thinkers searched the Jewish past for role models. Hence, the word “macabre.” The Christians “saved” the Maccabees. They totally left the books of the Maccabees out of the final edition of the Hebrew Bible. You know how at the end of a movie it always says “no animals were harmed in the making of this movie?” Forget that. So, too, they believed the Maccabees were the absolute models of chivalry and knighthood. And to this day, the elegant Hebrew word for “assimilate” is “l’hityaven” — “to become Greek.” So, they invented the oil story as a way of playing down the military victory, and there is something else they did as well. Of course, the only “real” spelling is the Hebrew one. It’s not a bad story, as it is, but it wasn’t the “real” miracle. However, circumstances are changing, including the manner in which the Jewish festival of lights is celebrated and interpreted, and the spelling of Hanukkah has become more commonplace. However, Chanukah should not be overlooked since it is the preferred spelling of traditionalists and the second most common variation. They remind people of danger they hoped was in the past. LABENDZ: Shortly after the Holocaust, there's been a bipartisan commitment to anti-antisemitism in this country. RICHMAN: We do have to light up our identities. But Shyovitz says it could also serve as a human moment and show people who their neighbors are. Having said that, it's hard to judge just how bad things are when Jews expect things to be excellent in America. It's kitschy and sweet and fills the window with light. PRICHEP: Give the candles a twist, and they light up for everyone to see. And this year, with what's happening on the global stage with Twitter deregulating, it's frightening. PRICHEP: Jacob Ari Labendz directs the Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Ramapo College.
