Donald Trump Now Has an NFT Collection—And Crypto Twitter ... (Decrypt)

The former U.S. president is selling $99 digital trading cards that show him as a superhero, astronaut, and more.

Teasing NFT cards as a major announcement is not the kind of fight people want to see now. Even conservative voices see the launch as a misfire. Donald Trump today launched a collection of NFT trading cards that claim to come with real-life benefits for buyers, including an invite to a gala dinner with Trump or even a meet-and-greet with the former U.S. This is the first time that Trump himself has released his own NFT collectibles, although there have been past unofficial projects. And NFT enthusiasts and Trump supporters alike are incredulous over the news. “Collect all of your favorite Trump Digital Trading Cards, very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting,” he wrote today.

Bitcoin has slumped and a crypto "Santa rally" seems unlikely. Still, here's something weird: Donald Trump now has an offical NFT collection.

(Stats accurate at time of publishing, based on CoinGecko.com data.) Answering questions in front of Congress, O’Leary called out actions from Binance as a main reason for the collapse of FTX as a company. O’Leary was paid US$15m by FTX to be one of its spokespeople during the height of the exchange’s success. The flaccid nature of the market today can possibly be put down to a few factors. Genesis, for example, which is the biggest trading desk for pro investors in crypto, is still very much deep in the woods regarding its financial ties to FTX. Apart from pushing the collectible angle, Trump, and whoever helped dream this up for him (possibly his NFT-loving wife Melania) have also added a kind of sweepstakes set of perks, giving holders the chance to win prizes. “and so much more, we’re doin’ a lot”. “Collect all of your favorite Trump Digital Trading Cards, very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting,” wrote Trump. However, none of that will go toward his political campaign, according to the website where Trump’s digital trading cards are being marketed. But the former president ultimately proceeded with the announcement, launching it just hours before his campaign made its first policy-related announcement where Trump, in a taped video, outlined “free speech” reforms he would pursue if elected to a nonconsecutive second term. But the attempt at recalibrating Trump was overshadowed by the NFT video release, portraying the former president as a cartoon superman shooting lasers out of his eyes. Another source close to Trump indicated that the former president was happy he did it. An outside adviser told CNN that a senior Trump aide expressed confusion and annoyance about the venture during a conversation when the adviser asked why the former president was getting involved with digital collectibles – or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) – at the outset of his 2024 presidential campaign. “And in that sense – it was successful.” Instead, the NFTs appear to be a new extension of Trump’s business portfolio.
