[deleted from existence](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/hbo-max-is-getting-rid-of-generation-and-much-more-original-content), tired of seeing just how disposable and unimportant these stories become when the bottom line begins to suffer. Warrior Nun might be many queer fans’ last straw, which does not bode well for the future of queer representation on screen, but who could blame them after all this heartache? Unlike peer First Kill, which debuted to a rotten 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, Warrior Nun’s second season was incredibly well received, still sitting at a 100% critics score and a 99% audience rating on almost 8000 reviews (as mentioned earlier, a record-setting high for a Netflix series). More than any other cancellation this year, Warrior Nun’s hurts the most, especially considering the quality of the series and the importance of the story it was able to tell. Netflix’s inability to commit to the shows that it releases, while actively attempting to sabotage them, is the opposite of what television is supposed to be. Though it’s unlikely that Warrior Nun has a similar stipulation, as Netflix has probably locked its shows down even more in the time since ODAAT was canceled, it seems like the only shred of hope left for an audience clamoring to overcome the series’ cliffhanger ending. Smaller, non-priority series continue to get lost in the shuffle: greenlit by Netflix for shorter and shorter seasons, never given the proper support, and then canceled before most people even know they exist. However, while the details of Warrior Nun’s contract and stipulations are unknown, One Day at a Time was able to be saved by a traditional network merely a few months after the cancellation, with Deadline Still, the task of convincing others to watch this series has not been an easy one, and that is due simply to Netflix’s track record, and the lingering wounds that are still open from one cancellation after another this year. When the second season dropped, many fans found themselves faced with pushback from potential viewers, many of them insisting that they would watch the series after it was already renewed.

Netflix's Warrior Nun is a textbook example of how to do a slow-burn queer romance right.
The season concludes with an episode named for Jeremiah 29:13—“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”—which sounds like nothing so much as both promise and prophecy for two women who have long defied the odds to be together in the first place. It is through caring for Beatrice that Ava ultimately realizes her final act of self-sacrifice is necessary in order to protect her—and the rest of the world she has come to deeply care for. Beatrice’s gradual acceptance of her feelings for Ava is tangled up with her own struggle with self-hatred and her hyperactive sense of duty, but they are what ultimately give her the strength to fight through multiple life-threatening situations to get to the woman she loves. In a welcome—and much-needed—evolution from its first season, Warrior Nun season 2 also fully leans into the “Avatrice” romance without reservation, committing to their relationship as something more than yet another unfortunate small-screen example of a queer love that dare not speak its name. And whether the season’s episodes are primarily dealing with questions of science or theology, they almost always come back to the dynamic between the two women in some way. Through stories of women, queer people, and people of color, the show offers multiple remarkably nuanced depictions of what it means to be a person of faith, embracing empowerment, agency, and self-determination in doing so.
While it was somewhat easy to see this coming, now that it's actually happened, it doesn't feel any less stupid and short-sighted.
Warrior Nun will not be the last. Wednesday is the rare ultra-megahit that lands in this category that is very safe because of its massive viewership numbers. Netflix made a calculation that Warrior Nun simply did not get enough viewership for the relative cost of bringing its CG angels and demons to the screen, and they cancelled it. But it was likely a doomed prospect from the outset, given how quickly Warrior Nun season 2 appeared and disappeared from Netflix’s top 10 list. While Warrior Nun season 2 may not literally be the greatest season of TV on Netflix, it was extremely good and fans rallied around the show to try to save it for a third season. It aired for two seasons and will not be back for a third despite cliffhangers and unresolved plotlines, and now, it has a fanbase in mourning.
Netflix has decided that "Warrior Nun" will not be extended for another season.
