South African left-hander Rilee Rossouw adds further destruction to the batting and, in Daniel Sams, Usman Qadir and Chris Green, the bowling has a nice combination of mystery and reliability. Losing Evans and Salt is a big blow for the Scorchers as they go in search of their fifth Big Bash crown. Of course, the same could be said of Boult, Zampa and Marcus Stoinis at the Stars. The Sixers also have a formidable bowling unit, with BBL record wicket-taker Sean Abbott leading the way. Meanwhile, defending champions Perth Scorchers start their campaign on Saturday with a home game against Sydney Sixers - a repeat of An innings clock will also be used.

The pressure will be on the likes of Boyce and fellow new signing Ben Manenti, a right-arm off-spinner, to hit the ground running at their new club. He chipped in with eight wickets last season and adds depth to the bowling attack. Hose also enjoyed a prolific T20 Blast campaign, scoring 557 runs - the third-most in the competition - at a rate of 160.98, including 40 fours and 28 sixes. The right-armer has only played nine T20s prior to BBL12 but has 14 wickets, all but one of which came in last season's Big Bash. In the former, he has scored over 2,000 runs at a strike rate just a shade under 150. Capable of batting as high as No.4, he averages 23.56 with a strike rate of 157.92 in T20 cricket and also has 69 wickets. Rashid is the obvious star here, not least on pitches like these where batters are throwing their hands at the ball due to variations in grip, wrist position, and speed through the air. They continued their strong form with wins over Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder in the eliminator and knockout, respectively, but missed out on the final after losing to Sydney Sixers by four wickets. He has been the head coach of the Adelaide Strikers since 2015 and led the team to its first Big Bash title in BBL07. One of Adelaide's adopted sons, he scored 365 runs at a strike rate of 155.31 and took 92 wickets with an economy of 6.44 in his first five seasons with the club and has never taken fewer than 16 wickets in a season. Rashid Khan: Adelaide Strikers used their platinum selection to retain the services of the Afghan leg-spinner despite his availability being limited by his involvement in January's SA20 league. Game-changing batter Travis Head has committed to the club for another two seasons, extending his 10-year tenure as a Striker.

The network would do well to remember that even in the showbiz-y world of T20, people watch cricket because they want to watch cricket, not because they want to find out how cricket can be improved on. It’s not enough to promote the big hits, the flashing stumps and the acrobatic catches: without investment in the contest it’s just strangers doing tricks. Moreover, the unavailability of Australia’s best and most recognisable players for the BBL season due to international commitments, combined with the struggle for local franchises to attract big names from overseas, began to bite. Even before the virus came along, the competition was on a downhill slide, due to a combination of economic reality and administrators with a penchant for golden-goose-slaughter. Sporting events everywhere took major blows during lockdown, and although the BBL put in a mighty effort to keep the competition alive during COVID times, disrupted schedules and an ever-growing list of players forced into isolation detracted from the spectacle. And now Seven begins the tricky task of whipping up interest in the league, having earlier this year gone to court in an attempt to extricate itself from its broadcast deal with Cricket Australia.

Two Melbourne Stars players test positive to COVID before their opening Big Bash match, but new rules mean they could still play.

"The sun was out before the game so I'm sure he felt a little bit better, but you wouldn't want to have COVID and be out in the cold." "Burnsy's had a tough day with the hamstring and that as well, he'll be pretty flat I think and the same with 'Stoin', I don't think he was quite up for it with the ball and he would have been quite handy." Melbourne Stars guns Joe Burns and Marcus Stoinis both tested positive for the virus in the hours before the game but played on regardless in their last-ball loss to the Sydney Thunder.

Stars captain, and Australian spinner, Adam Zampa was poised to play in the T20 World Cup after testing positive before withdrawing. Teams will also have to notify match officials and the opposition of any Covid-positive players. Stoinis lasted just one ball with the bat and didn’t field as the illness took hold, putting him under a cloud for the Stars game on Friday.

Two key Melbourne Stars players could take the field in tonight's Big Bash League season opener, despite recovering from COVID.

Zampa was a late withdrawal from the match and was replaced by Ashton Agar. Mix in the youth and pace of Richardson, who has been tipped for a great international career for years, and Lance Morris, nicknamed the "wild thing" for his ability to bowl very quickly and they have the best seam attack in the competition. His T20 record is underwhelming at present, but he is a broad-shouldered 23-year-old – born in Bournemouth – and he figured briefly in last season's T20 Blast for Surrey. Morris was called up to Australia's Test squad recently and is believed to be the sharpest fast bowler in the country. Marsh's injury – there are few better in the world at what he does – is a major shame. The concern with Mills is always his fitness, already confined to just the four-over spells in T20 cricket, he was forced out of The Hundred and only appeared in one home T20I for England this summer due to a toe problem. That role will most likely fall to captain Turner, who has 74 Big Bash sixes and a strike rate of 142.47 in 87 innings. But they are without their two top run-scorers from last season as Kurtis Patterson moves to Sydney Sixers and Colin Munro leaves for Brisbane Heat, who picked him up in the draft in the draft. It is safe, though, to say he is yet to dominate an overseas franchise competition in the same way. Spots are potentially up for grabs and Turner will remain in the conversation, especially if he can propel his team to another successful Big Bash campaign. He comes with oodles of experience, plenty of success with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, a previous stint in the Big Bash behind him with Melbourne Renegades and, interestingly, a recent autobiography that might just make him a pantomime villain among Australian fans. He ended his playing career with the 2017/18 campaign and took over as coach in the following season. But he then was left out for a period of time and has failed to reach those heights again.
