'He was one of the first on the list': The forgotten star who could turn around BBL basketcase.

“It’s not an easy place to bat five and six, and to get the numbers that he does batting at that position, it is quite extraordinary.” “Most of the guys in the list bat at one, two or three in the batting order, if you gave those guys in the top five or six to bat down the order for a few years they wouldn’t have the numbers like Wells produces. “If you are batting at four, five and six in T20 cricket it is probably the hardest place to bat, and to have the numbers he gets, it is extraordinary. The set their sights on one man. Wells belted a staggering six maximums and nine fours to strike at 192.45 in an innings that saw the Melbourne side in red chase down the Stars’ 7/220 in only 18.5 overs. “That’s a testament to Jono that he can do that in that position. Across 111 games, Wells has scored a staggering 2554 runs to sit fourth on the all-time BBL leaderboard and also scored the second most runs in BBL11 with an impressive 501 at an average of 38.53 “We put a list of names together and Wellsy was one of the first on that list, and everybody that was involved in management we jumped at that opportunity. “When teams are struggling, he always gets you to a score that’s competitive and I think that’s going to be a massive thing for us, having that experience in the middle order. “You don’t get the opportunity to get guys like that very often, proven players are usually secured with a contract, so to find out he was out of contract and wanted a move was a huge plus for us. “Having him (Wells) there will allow the top order to play nice and aggressively, challenge teams that way and hopefully we can come up with a game plan that can fit the mould we want to play in,” Maddinson said. “Bit of planning to do, but I imagine he’d be in that middle to upper order, sort of around that four or five spot.”

BBL|12 preview: Brisbane heating up for new era (cricket.com.au)

A Heat homecoming for Queensland's Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw plus some savvy draft picks will help Brisbane prove their is life after Lynn.

But it's the teams that have had experience of doing well in the tournament you want to shape up well against." A big part of the strategy is to have that experience here in Australia before so we were very happy with the way it played out for us." And so that we create a really good T20 tournament that we'd like to think is second to the BBL in Australian cricket." We couldn't keep the strategy going with Mujeeb, which was always going to be a challenge for us. "Losing Chris is a big one for our organisation because he's been such a big part of it over many seasons. "It is a new element (the winter T20 competion).

This season may be the last for the likes of Christian and O’Keefe, with the influx of youth through spin twins set to cause a few selection headaches. The pressure will be right on Jason Sangha to lead his team this summer, with a somewhat undermanned squad set to begin the tournament against the Melbourne Stars. The Sixers have stuck to their guns this year, with the majority of their squad returning for BBL The Scorchers have easily the best bowling group in the BBL, while the role of the allrounders will be more important than ever. In addition to Cameron Green’s absence through his test duties and a shock national call up for Lance Morris, the Scorchers have had a busy period in the last fortnight as they attempt to reshuffle their roster prior to the tournament. Russell will begin the tournament and will be available for the first four matches of the season, before being replaced by Guptill who looks set to form a menacing combination at the top of the order alongside Aaron Finch. Stoinis’ return to bowling will be a huge boost alongside International recruits Boult and Wood, while the emergence of youngster Brody Couch last season will leave the fast bowling stocks set. Sutherland has enjoyed a breakout campaign for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield and will look to make a key all round contribution in red. Summary: With the Hurricanes having strong availability to start the tournament, the ‘Cane Train’ will be one of the toughest teams to beat this season. Jimmy Peirson looks set to continue to serve as the club’s captain and wicket-keeper in Khawaja’s absence, playing a vital role at the backend of an innings. The Heat have strong depth in their squad which will be tested this summer, with players like Bryant, Heazlett, Kuhnemann and Bartlett likely to play major roles in the tournament despite not being in the team’s strongest XI. Lynn will be a key part of the Strikers’ top order as he looks to solidify the holes left by Head and Carey.

Preview: BBL|12 set to get underway (Rookie Me Central)

The Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars are set to get BBL season 12 underway in Canberra, with both sides harbouring playoff hopes.

Fans and clubs alike will also be buoyed by the introduction of the decision review system (DRS). “(Melbourne Stars) are a tough side, always one of the strongest sides in the comp. A new rule introduced is that of the innings clock. Everyone’s coming from all over Australia, all over the world to meet together – some familiar faces, some that know the landscape pretty well, some are probably more relaxed, some are a bit anxious and thinking about what the game’s going to be like. He was his side’s leading run scorer last season with 445 at an average of just under 50, and will pivot the top order at number three. English international Alex Hales and South African Rilee Rossouw were the club’s key draftees, with the former returning for his fourth-consecutive season in Thunder colours.

Stoinis, Burns in BBL opener with COVID (PerthNow)

Melbourne Stars' Marcus Stoinis and Joe Burns have tested positive to COVID-19 on the day of the BBL season opener but will play against the Sydney Thunder.

From the beginning of the 12th over, the Stars hit only two boundaries as Daniel Sams (2-21) and Green (1-19) returned economical figures from their four overs. But he was unable to walk the injury off and began preventing partner Nick Larkin from playing for singles. It was BBL debutant Farooqi (2-20 from four overs) who finished as the pick of the Thunder's bowlers.

"I just wanted to keep it really simple, stay still, watch the ball, just react after that ... A second classic catch from Couch, diving in the deep, dismissed Green and the Stars were all but home with no more established batters left to come in for the Thunder. Green and Sandhu needed 15 runs from the last two overs and when the latter slogged Luke Wood to long on for four, the Thunder had a sniff. we just said if it's in your zone then smack it. The pair's premature exits on Tuesday night underscored a disappointing innings at the crease for the Stars, who were sent in to bat after losing the toss. The Sydney Thunder have survived a disastrous batting collapse on BBL opening night to claim a one-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars, who have cause for concern after losing Joe Burns to a hamstring injury mid-game.

Taken by the Stars with the third pick of the inaugural draft, veteran New Zealand international Trent Boult will make his BBL debut against the Thunder, while Englishman Luke Wood is also playing in the tournament for the first time. To minimise the spread of the infection, the pair travelled to the ground in a separate vehicle from their teammates, have their own dressing room and will not sit with the team in the dugout. The Stars confirmed to AAP that the pair tested positive on Tuesday but from this summer, the BBL is permitting teams and COVID-positive players to make the call on whether they feel comfortable playing while infected.

The network would do well to remember that even in the showbiz-y world of T20, people watch cricket because they want to watch cricket, not because they want to find out how cricket can be improved on. It’s not enough to promote the big hits, the flashing stumps and the acrobatic catches: without investment in the contest it’s just strangers doing tricks. Moreover, the unavailability of Australia’s best and most recognisable players for the BBL season due to international commitments, combined with the struggle for local franchises to attract big names from overseas, began to bite. Even before the virus came along, the competition was on a downhill slide, due to a combination of economic reality and administrators with a penchant for golden-goose-slaughter. Sporting events everywhere took major blows during lockdown, and although the BBL put in a mighty effort to keep the competition alive during COVID times, disrupted schedules and an ever-growing list of players forced into isolation detracted from the spectacle. And now Seven begins the tricky task of whipping up interest in the league, having earlier this year gone to court in an attempt to extricate itself from its broadcast deal with Cricket Australia.
