But after that betrayal at the end of season one, this love became far more complicated, and Simon even dates a new guy at one point to try and get over Wil. Until then, we recommend binging the first two seasons on repeat to help improve its chances of renewal. One key cast member who probably won't return is Ivar Forsling in the role of Prince Erik. However, that depends on how quickly a season three renewal is announced. Leonard Terfelt as Micke, Simon and Sara's father, and Ingela Olsson as Miss Anette Lilja, Hillerska's headmistress. If so, then we could be looking at a Winter 2023 release date.

Season two only just arrived on Netflix (1 November), so there's plenty of time for a third series to be confirmed, particularly depending on how popular S2 proves to be.

We review Netflix's Young Royals season 2 - this article is spoiler-free, so you can read without the risk of any major reveals.

Young Royals season 2 continues to live up to the hype with a fresh, Swedish LGTBQ+ drama that fashions a plot circling romance and revenge. I feel that season 2 of Young Royals is better than its predecessor. It makes for sensationalist viewing, but there are plenty of surprises in season 2 that will shock the audience. A lot is riding on the story’s main plot points, and the Netflix series does not waste its time delving into the less important subplots that audiences will talk little about. [But the end of season 1](https://readysteadycut.com/2021/07/01/young-royals-season-1-episode-6-recap-the-ending-explained/) left this bubbling, complicated love story at a crossroads. 'Young Royals' on Netflix: Cast explains big Season 2 moments (Los Angeles Times)

From their first chemistry read, young stars Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg threw off sparks. In the process, they've made 'Young Royals' a global hit.

As for where “Young Royals” goes next, from the future of Wilhelm and Simon’s relationship to the inevitable royal fallout from his break with tradition, Ambjörn insists that “it’s up to the Netflix gods” whether there will be a third season. I never got the teenage dream, and I felt, when I watched ‘Young Royals,’ I got that.’” Since the debut of “Young Royals” 16 months ago, Ryding and Rudberg have shot to international prominence, amassing a combined total of more than 4 million followers across Twitter and Instagram. There are young viewers around the world who have come out or “found partners or a sense of community through our show,” but there are also older ones “who had these kinds of secret relationships in the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s even,” Ambjörn recalls. Though Rudberg, who has struggled with hateful online comments in the past, had braced himself for negativity, he and the rest of the cast have been touched instead by the series’ ability to reach LGBTQ people of different cultures and generations. “This season, we feel way safer with each other,” Ryding says, “and that creates an environment where you’re able to have fun.” “Wilhelm is so obsessed with himself and his own problems that he doesn’t see it from the bigger picture.” “And whatever they do, it will not make them forget the love that they have for each other and what they’ve been through together.” “Even though Simon knows that it’s wrong, and he knows that he is there with Marcus and he has been saying no to Wilhelm, I just think it’s so beautiful that they just have to feel each other,” Rudberg says with a smile. Ambjörn retooled the premise, choosing to tell a queer coming-of-age story that is also an examination of the social class structure and enduring institutional power of the monarchy in Sweden. “We never really got to know each other as Edvin and Omar; we got to know each other as our characters first,” Ryding tells The Times in a video interview. Wilhelm respects that a lot, and that’s what he’s drawn to at first.”

Young Royals is so much more than just Heartstopper meets The ... (digitalspy.com)

Young Royals season 2 continues to prove that this breakout Swedish hit is so much more than just another generic teen show.

"I think our idea of it was to make it fun and sort of awkward. It also helps that the actors playing these roles actually look like teens. [Young Royals](https://www.digitalspy.com/young-royals/) up in just one sentence, you might say that it's [Heartstopper](https://www.digitalspy.com/heartstopper/) meets [The Crown](https://www.digitalspy.com/the-crown/) with a bit of [Skam's](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a37186581/ragnarok-herman-tommeraas-skam-reunion/) Scandinavian angst thrown in for good measure. But it's not just sex that sets Young Royals apart from other shows of its ilk. "We really work on showing what teenagers actually look like, and what teenagers go through, how teenagers feel, and what they do when they feel some things... It doesn’t have to be cringey – that sort of awkward. In episode three, August and Sara bring the awkward energy of early kiss scenes into something more physical, and we even see August rip open a condom packet at one point too. I hope we hopefully capture that sort of realistic awkwardness with the fiddling of the condom, and the little giggles, and the fumbling around." We're back again to awkward glances and simmering tension for the majority of this season. We're sure Simon and Wilhelm could learn a lot from how Nick and Charlie navigated their own love story in Heartstopper season one. That's not to say Heartstopper's innocent approach to love is a bad thing. [Young Royals](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a41461394/young-royals-season-2-release-date-surprise-clip/) is a gay teen love story, after all, and the Crown's machinations regularly impede that love, echoing the real-life problems British royals like Princess Margaret face in [Netflix](https://www.digitalspy.com/netflix/)'s other royal show.

Ambjörn is understandably tight-lipped, saying only that she has no intention to keep them apart just for the sake of drama. Ambjörn says she knows audiences love Simon for his moral fortitude, but she thought it would be more interesting to see him strip some of that away as he found his way back to Wilhelm. But by the finale, he comes to accept his feelings and Wilhelm’s impossible circumstances. “The problem was that he was forced to lie. But eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that Ryding has been quietly laying the groundwork for Wilhelm’s gradual sense of comfort in his royal role even before the speech.

Will there be a Young Royals season 3 on Netflix? Here's everything you need to know about the future of the Swedish show.

Will there be a Young Royals season 3 though? With that in mind, it looks like season 3 will focus on the aftermath of the speech and how the public reacts to Wilhelm dating a boy. Seasons 1 and 2 both have six episodes and we imagine that season 3 will be a similar length. Marcus and Simon end things in season 2 and Marcus doesn't actually attend Hillerska so it's possible that he only had a one-season arc. Given that the show is still yet to be renewed, Netflix haven't revealed a Young Royals season 3 release date at the moment. Netflix previously revealed that Young Royals would be returning for a second season almost three months after season 1 dropped.

Young Royals: The best Wilhelm and Simon moments from season 2 (Gay Times Magazine)

Wilmon stans, unite: the long-awaited sophomore season of Netflix's beloved Swedish teen drama Young Royals has finally arrived.

A rather angsty season of Young Royals concludes with Wilhelm admitting to the press that it was him in the video with Simon, moments after Simon tells him that he wants to be with him – in secret or not – and finally confesses his love. “I’m still the Crown Prince, not you,” he reaffirms, before demanding, “Get down on your knees!” Wilhelm proceeds to spit on the ground in-front of August. [Simon’s Song](https://open.spotify.com/album/2Vw1hsZFTihZd6sPhSedUY?si=mlNB6PWQS1Ky1gA1jJcW-Q) in front of the school, Hillerska’s most acclaimed singer-songwriter and future Grammy winner pursues Wilhelm in the courtyard to discuss how “everything got so messed up” in their relationship. Wilmon’s reconciliation continues to develop in the final moments of episode five when the duo make love, not before Wilhelm recognises that his bedroom curtain – the root of all their problems – isn’t drawn. After August recruits Alexander to take the fall for the leaked video, Wilhelm pays tribute to Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande’s R&B classic Get On Your Knees as he confronts August – shotgun in hand. Joining the choir, Simon performs his track to the elation of Wilhelm and it’s all very cute. After being informed by August that “third-years go first”, Wilhelm initiates a vote on the hierarchical practice as he asks the room: “Who thinks we should stop serving the third-years, and instead, everyone can eat whenever they want?” A tense – we repeat, tense – stand-off between Wilhelm and August results in the latter dissolving the rule to the surprise of his loyal followers. Wilhelm displays a feistier new side (and haircut!) in the first episode when he tells – or rather, orders – August, his cousin and former best friend who leaked the intimate video of him and Simon, to address him as the “Crown Prince” from this moment on; eliciting a shocked response from the rest of the Hillerska students (and a ‘yaaas!’ from viewers). Shortly after Wilhelm makes a mockery of his new nemesis – which we loved to see, we should add – he reunites with Simon for the first time since he awkwardly refused to reciprocate his proclamation of love in the closing moments of season one. At the first luncheon of the year, Wilhelm continues to defy Hillerska’s outdated traditions (and August) as he leaves the table to collect some food. Because Wilhelm breathes power this season, he emerges victorious and stays at Hillerska without his bodyguards; one of his “non-negotiable” terms. With Wilhelm’s place at Hillerska secure, he informs Simon that the two can pursue a romantic relationship in secret until he turns 18.

To mark the release of Young Royals season two, Joshua Littleford explains why Netflix's teen drama is a must-watch for queer audiences.

I’m hoping for another fantastic season with as much drama (but hopefully a happier ending) as the first, and I’m sure the cast and writers will deliver. Season one ended in a quite dramatic way leaving me so ready for the new season – and I’m glad I’ve only had to wait a few months. But there is also drama that causes the relationship to fall apart, which makes you angry and frustrated at the characters all the while keeping you invested for season two. Like Charlie and Nick’s relationship in Heartstopper, the relationship between Simon and Wilhelm is a feel-good romance that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Although at a private boarding school, not all the characters are the stereotypical private school students. I used to reply with a simple “no”, even though I could have just told them I’m gay and not hidden it away – but that is hard to do.

"The one with me and Simon." After two years, they finally have each other, and it looks like they're going to need that support when the world comes for them in season three. But he's happy too, because with this surprise comes the realisation that Wilhelm won't keep him a secret. As everyone prepares for Wilhelm to give the big Hillerska speech, Sara heads off to the bus stop with a plan to leave the school forever. In fact, it looks like Wil has a plan to declare his love back in the most public way possible... "It was me in the video that was leaked last semester," he boldly declares. Wilhelm doesn't have it much better either, getting into a fight with his bigoted mum and clueless dad, the reigning King and Queen of Sweden. The Crown Prince reminds August that he has proof it was him, but his slimy second cousin has already thought of everything. But here, we start with the morning after their reunion, where Simon reminds Wil he's off to call the police on August. But as Sara rightly points out, the truth is, "You’re only protecting yourself." He’s the worst person in the world. By the time episode five comes to an end, all of those secrets are out in the open.

'Young Royals' Season 2: Ending, Explained - Did Love Win For ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

The Swedish queer romance series "Young Royals" had its fandom beg for season two in the hopes that their favorite couple, Wilhelm and Simon, would get a.

He realized that he was not the perfect son his mother had hoped for him to be, but it was important for him to accept himself and be authentic about who he was. Wilhelm chose to openly admit their relationship after he realized that he had to be the change he was searching for. He confessed to the public that it was him in the leaked video. Even though it was a moment he would have preferred to keep private, he valued honesty and believed in its importance to bring change to the world. He could not report August to the police because August was his cousin and belonged to the royal family. When she learned that Simon was planning on reporting him to the police, she requested him to confess multiple times, and August agreed to give it a thought. August explained to Sara that he did what he had to do to protect the Royal family, but she knew that it was a purely selfish act. Felice had arrived at the spot with Sara, who had recently confessed to Felice that she was in love with August. As Simon and Wilhelm argued about the mess they were in, Wilhelm mentioned that it was August who had leaked the video. Wilhelm promised to be honest with the press, but his mother pressured him to deliver a speech denying that he was in the video. She reported the information to August and asked him to confess his crime to the police instead of hiding away even after knowing that he was guilty. While Wilhelm was sent to school in the hopes of living a disciplined life, he found love in the charming yet shy choir boy, Simon.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Young Royals' Season 2 On Netflix, Where A ... (Decider)

Crown Prince Wilhelm continues to rebel against his royal family in the new season of the popular Swedish series.

It’s about how Wille struggles with his royal responsibilities while trying to build a life he wants and love who he wants to love. Wille’s desire to live his own life is even stronger in Season 2 and it’s what drives the show to be more than the typical YA fare. He can’t love who he wants to love, while at the same time he feels that August can’t really get what he deserves because the royal family protects its own. Creators Lisa Ambjörn and Lars Beckung have done a good job at raising the stakes in Season 2, giving Wille more of an impetus to want to live his own life and not the life his mother or her advisors want him to live. Wille knows, though, that telling Simon that August leaked the video would ripple through the school and the royal family. She’s given a ride home from the stables by a boy named Marcus (Tommy Wättring), who finds Simon singing in his room, and there’s an immediate mutual attraction; Marcus invites Simon to karaoke night at the local pub.
