A huge crowd celebrating Halloween surged into an alley in a night life area of the South Korean capital on Saturday night, crushing people to death.

"The United States stands ready to provide the Republic of Korea with any support it needs." The crowd appears in good spirits and calm at first, but then a commotion begins and people start being pushed and pressed into one another. Many of the party-goers were wearing masks and Halloween costumes. It was the first Halloween event in Seoul in three years after the country lifted COVID restrictions and social distancing. "People were layered on top of others like a tomb. But the number exploded soon after, outnumbering first responders at the scene," Mr Lee said.

"But even after we did that, there were people collapsed at the entrance, and some passed out," he added. Park Kang-hyun, 26, traveled to Seoul from Gwangju city, in the country's southeast, in search of two missing friends. The friend who survived said "there were just too many people. Bieber was spotted elsewhere in a second costume, fit for a goth masquerade: a lacy camisole she paired with a cloak and mask. Seoul's Halloween crowd crush: How were more than 150 people ... (ABC News)

More than 150 people were crushed to death, trapped in a narrow Seoul alley for more than an hour. Here's what we know about how the tragedy unfolded.

After the Astroworld crowd surge in Houston claimed the lives of 10 concert attendees, G. “As people struggle to get up, arms and legs get twisted together. It was completely out of control," he said. The death toll rose substantially over the following hours and days with a total of 135 people, including children and two police officers, passing away due to injuries sustained in the crush. Hundreds rushed for the exits to avoid the gas, resulting in a crush that trampled or suffocated 34 to death almost instantly. An Australian man in Seoul has told the ABC that a friend of his died, and said another Australian is in intensive care with another dual citizen is in a stable condition. Keith Still, a visiting professor of crowd science at the University of Suffolk in England, said it takes only 30 seconds before you lose consciousness, and around about six minutes before "compressive or restrictive asphyxia" sets in. Before this, the deadliest crushing disaster in South Korea's history was at a pop concert in 2005, where 11 people were killed and around 60 others were injured. A woman in her 20s, surnamed Park, told Yonhap that she and others were standing along the side of the alley while others caught in the middle of the alley had no escape. Emergency workers and pedestrians desperately performed CPR on rows of people lying in the streets after the crush. The survivor, who gave their surname as Kim, said they were trapped for about an hour and a half before being rescued, as some people shouted “help me!” and others were short of breath, according to the Seoul-based Hankyoreh newspaper. Witness Moon Ju-young said there were clear signs of trouble in the alleys before the incident.

In recent years we’ve seen insane celebrity Halloween costumes like Lizzo as Baby Yoda, Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz as Shrek and Fiona, or Emily Ratajkowski as Marge Simpson that were downright insane in terms of the amount of effort that was put in. Halloween is the biggest of them all. Halloween may not be the biggest event on the Australian calendar—which, if you ask us, is a shame—but it is still one of the most far-out fun.

Now they’re given media platforms and venerated like gods as they rain their monkey shit down at us from their golden cages. This made the world an infinitely better place. The star jasmine is blooming, the jacaranda is on the way, and all across this wide brown land people are bitching about Halloween. But being America, they couldn’t just leave it alone. Some observers like to say when America sneezes Australia gets a cold. You can feel it in the air.

South Korea probes Halloween crowd surge as nation mourns (ABC News)

South Korean police are investigating what caused a crowd surge that killed more than 150 people during Halloween festivities in Seoul last weekend.

Many people also laid chrysanthemums, bottles of the Korean liquor soju, candles and snacks near an Itaewon subway station, with a host of condolence messages posted on the wall and elsewhere. The government opened temporary memorials Monday in Seoul and other major cities in South Korea. Nearly two-thirds of the dead — 98 — were women. The police statement said police-provided security for a president has long been handled by two special police units and that the units have nothing to do with the Yongsan police station, whose jurisdiction includes Itaewon. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency didn’t immediately publicize the details of its probe. Officers are analyzing footage taken by security cameras in the area at the time of the crush and related video clips posted on social media.
