After trading away Christian McCaffrey, Panthers reject idea of ... (NFL.com)

Christian McCaffrey is headed west. In the running back's wake remains a Panthers team forced to answer questions about its future.

More importantly, Carolina has four picks in the first three rounds of the 2022 draft, which Fitterer sees as a good place to start reshaping the roster. The responsibility now falls squarely on the shoulders of Fitterer, who is tasked with spending Carolina's picks wisely in order to add quality talent to a team that doesn't exactly lack it. Fitterer told reporters Friday that interest in McCaffrey started picking up Tuesday, and he received three legitimate offers, including a couple of "test-the-waters" type of offers; Rapoport reported Thursday the Rams were also in play for the RB. Carolina is now stocked with selections to remake the team into a winner through the draft, leading many to wonder whether the Panthers might surrender their hopes of contending in 2022 in order to better position themselves for the future. Christian McCaffrey contract details: How trade to 49ers from ... (Sporting News AU)

The 49ers are getting a talented player with no risk to the salary cap while the Panthers are getting a needed financial reset.

The flexibility with McCaffrey's contract makes it less of a burden for the 49ers to acquire. The Panthers will take hefty hits this year and next. They had already paid him the guaranteed money associated with the deal, and that will count against their salary cap over the next two seasons. And yet, this won't prove too costly for the Panthers. Essentially, the 49ers can approach the McCaffrey contract on a year-to-year basis. Only the $575,000 owed to him this season will be guaranteed. That is, of course, provided the team doesn't restructure his contract. McCaffrey is in the first year of a four-year contract extension worth roughly $64 million. But the 49ers won't be paying the 26-year-old quite that much. Many are focused on the draft-pick compensation in this deal, but another important element is McCaffrey's contract. Why did the Panthers trade Christian McCaffrey? Carolina commits ... (Sporting News)

San Francisco reportedly sent four draft picks back Carolina's way for the top player available at the 2022 NFL trade deadline.

As Week 7 begins, the Panthers have that top spot, as it owns the worst record in the league. With their top offensive player now out of the picture, the Panthers have their eyes on maintaining possession of the No. While the Panthers were not able to grab a first-rounder from the 49ers, collecting four draft picks over the next two drafts that range from the second round to the fifth is a strong get for a team looking to build through the draft. Carolina is facing a rebuild and needs to acquire as many draft picks as possible while also trying to secure the top pick for the 2023 NFL Draft. By getting a deal done before another game that could potentially diminish his value, the Panthers capitalize on the return. In fact, this isn't the only trade the Panthers have made. 1 trade deadline looming, the rumors turned into a matter of "when," not "if," McCaffrey would be dealt. The writing was on the wall for McCaffrey and Carolina. However, it's hard to complain about getting four draft picks, including three in the middle rounds of the 2023 draft. They're 1-5 this season, Baker Mayfield does not seem like the answer at QB and a new head coach will need to be hired in the offseason. While some teams are stuck in limbo ahead of the deadline, it's clear the Panthers were going to be sellers. Christian McCaffrey traded to 49ers: Biggest questions and what's next (ESPN Australia)

Christian McCaffrey was dealt from the Panthers to the 49ers in a surprise move Thursday night. Here are the implications.

[DJ Moore](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3915416/dj-moore) is the only legitimate threat now that [Robbie Anderson](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2574808/robbie-anderson) has been traded to the [Arizona Cardinals](/nfl/team/_/name/ari/arizona-cardinals). Wilks has to replace him with second-year back [Chuba Hubbard](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4241416/chuba-hubbard) and journeyman [D'Onta Foreman](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3125116/d'onta-foreman). Teams I've talked to believe the Rams and [Denver Broncos](/nfl/team/_/name/den/denver-broncos) were involved to some extent but were unwilling to reach the price point the 49ers ended up paying. [Matt Ioannidis](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2976263/matt-ioannidis) is the only starter not under contract. [Nick Bosa](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4040605/nick-bosa) an enormous amount of money this offseason. McCaffrey was his offense, accounting for 75% of the team's yardage in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the [Los Angeles Rams](/nfl/team/_/name/lar/los-angeles-rams). McCaffrey is a one-year rental on a cheap contract for San Francisco, with a $1.035 million salary thanks to Carolina's offseason contract restructure. [San Francisco 49ers](/nfl/team/_/name/sf/san-francisco-49ers) have mostly watched as the NFC West division rival [Los Angeles Rams](/nfl/team/_/name/lar/los-angeles-rams) have repeatedly swung for the fences to try to win the Super Bowl. No team has been more banged up than the Niners in the first six weeks, and while many of those players are expected to return, there are no guarantees when it comes to health. It should, but that comes with the significant caveat of whether the Niners and McCaffrey can get (and stay) relatively healthy. The risk is obvious: McCaffrey has missed 23 games in the past two seasons, and he's joining a team that is consistently snakebit by injury. 1 option at running back, Shanahan will use him in the pass game plenty and create more headaches for defenses, who now have to keep track of him and the likes of receivers

Christian McCaffrey Trade To The San Francisco 49ers: Analyzing ... (Forbes)

I won't go as far to say that general manager John Lynch and Co. heeded my call. But late Thursday evening, news broke that pretty much shattered the NFL news ...

But the question becomes whether anyone selected in that range would have anywhere near the same impact as a healthy Christian McCaffrey over the next three-plus seasons. This would likely include restructuring the contracts of Williams, Armstead, Warner, Kittle and Charvarius Ward, who are set to count a combined $76-plus million against the cap in 2023. The 49ers are projected to pick up two third-round compensatory picks under the guise of the NFL’s minority hiring program. This should leave the 49ers with a nice amount of selections once all is said and done. As it stands, the 49ers have avenues that could help with the cap next spring. The addition of McCaffrey changes the dynamics for San Francisco’s offense in a big way. The McCaffrey trade brings this to well under $10 million. [four-year, $64 million contract](https://www.forbes.com/profile/christian-mccaffrey/) that he signed back in April of 2020. And they'll probably have a high draft pick, in the range where they can pick up a top quarterback prospect in the draft. You also look at the rest of the division and the Saints are down on their luck and there's no telling how long Tom Brady continues playing in Tampa. It is unfortunate that he had that reputation of sloppy handling before the Falcons, but I am hopeful that he will be able to put it in the rearview mirror and continue his development. The NFC South looks up for grabs this year and in the future. But they have started well in large part because of the talent brought in on a tiiiiiiiiiight budget. Now he's had to unlearn the thinking of all those coordinators in addition to relearning - at the same time, no less - thinking and plays from Smith. And getting a quarterback on a budget in Marcus Mariota has been a positive. And, now, with the benefit of hindsight, getting a second-round pick and more for Julio Jones was a good return. And while the Niners will get McCaffrey for a little less than $700,000 for the rest of this season, his salary cap number jumps to $12 million in each of the next three years. "It's not every day that you get a guy like Christian at the minimum," Lynch said. So, I think everyone looks into it but it's also nice to keep a good player away from the team that we have to compete with year in and year out." "The first thing I told Christian was that this was our plan all along," Shanahan said, laughing. Lynch said the trade began to come together when the team was in West Virginia for a week of practice last week. For their part, Shanahan and Lynch made it clear that they view McCaffrey as a 49er beyond this season. It's something the Niners have been increasingly aware of and strengthened their desire to close out deals like this as fast as possible. "In my opinion, (it's) the best run game and one of the most explosive offenses in the league. And I think you just go down the roster and you look at all the guys, I think that's the thing I'm most excited about. McCaffrey arrived in the Bay Area on Friday morning and was quickly plugged into the team's daily activities. We've all gotta get better but we do still very much believe in this team, and that's why we took a swing at an excellent football player." Which explains, at least in part, why coach Kyle Shanahan didn't address it at all until the waning moments of that meeting.
