Brittany Higgins case: Linda Reynolds sent text messages to Bruce ... (The Australian Financial Review)

The former defence minister has told a court she has been going through the Brittany Higgins case mentally for 18 months.

After the pair discussed the late night incident, Senator Reynolds said to Ms Higgins that she should speak with the Australian Federal Police. Connect with Tom on [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) Mr Drumgold said Senator Reynolds was “attempting to coach the cross-examination”, asking her to explain her motive. Until that time, Senator Reynolds said she was unaware of the rape allegations, but said she knew Ms Higgins was distressed and had talked about going to see a doctor. Senator Reynolds said she had been going through the events mentally since Ms Higgins alleged in two February 2021 interviews that she had been raped on a couch in Parliament’s ministerial wing. “Because I was curious to know what had been said, but I was advised by my lawyer that that was not appropriate,” she told the court.

During this meeting, Senator Reynolds said she raised the security breach and Ms Higgins said she knew it was “not the right thing to do and she did not want to lose her job”.

Ms Reynolds was grilled by prosecutor Shane Drumgold SC during Ms Higgins' rape trial against Lehrmann in the ACT Supreme Court on Monday.

'She said she woke up the next morning and got dressed. The senator told the court the only time she spoke with Ms Higgins about the evening of March 22, 2019, was in October 2019 - explaining that the conversation was only about the security breach. the security breach. Ms Cash told the court that Ms Higgins was concerned about the issue of the security breach, in March 2019, would be made public because the media enquiry was from a journalist from the Canberra Times. When speaking about what she knew about Ms Higgins' claims in the weeks following the alleged assault, Ms Reynolds told the court she learned about most of the allegations on February 15, 2019 - when The Project aired and a News Corp article was published. You've not got better things to do in Rwanda?' I categorically reject that assertion.' You're injecting yourself by trying to assist in cross-examination.' Ms Reynolds said Ms Higgins 'explained in more detail over the course of the discussion that she was 'very drunk and could not remember what happened.' 'I asked Ms Higgins about the incident and she was very apologetic and embarrassed and she did apologise. If so, are you able to provide my lawyer?' These days, I cover the ACT and Queanbeyan courts. After stints in New Zealand, the UK and the Canary Islands, I returned to Australia in 2018. Mr Drumgold finished by putting it to Senator Reynolds that she had decided to deal with the events of March 2019 by adoping an approach in which "the less [she] knew, the better". The senator also denied being "politically invested" in the outcome of the trial, though she admitted she was "interested" in the result. Senator Reynolds also rejected this proposition, saying it had been made "very clear" to her that it would not be appropriate for her partner to be telling her what had been said in court before she gave her own evidence. Mr Drumgold pushed Senator Reynolds further, revealing the politician's partner had "found himself in the back of the court" during Ms Higgins' evidence.

Shortly afterwards, she would be accused in the ACT Supreme Court of offering “cross examination tips” to the defence lawyer for the accused Bruce Lehrmann.

“So that’s when I said to her that, you know, as her boss – and I’m not a trained counsellor and I’m not the person to be having this conversation with. Mr Drumgold said to Ms Reynolds: “I’m going to put this to you directly that at our time 4.27pm on Thursday, 6 October, you were aware that Ms Higgins had just started her cross-examination. “I don’t know how it could be politically embarrassing. My lawyer was very – my lawyer was very clear and I have been in Rwanda for the last week. At 4.27pm on Thursday, 6 October, you sent a text to the defence lawyer saying, ‘Hi, do you have the daily transcripts? You know, if you’ve got somebody who can’t remember what happened and she was getting dressed and she’s distressed. “Yes, but I was advised that it was not appropriate. “And your partner lives in Perth? I came back early to testify today.” Mr Drumgold then put it to Ms Reynolds that she had arranged for “your husband to sit in the back of the court, didn’t you?” “Have you attempted to inform yourself of the evidence of Ms Higgins in this trial?” Mr Drumgold asked Ms Reynolds. “Have you attempted to obtain the evidence of Ms Higgins in this trial?”

On Monday Senator Reynolds was accused of trying to interfere in the trial by requesting a copy of Ms Higgins' transcript of evidence to the defence.

Thousands have packed the promenade at Bondi to cheer 23-year-old Nedd Brockmann's arrival. But while many are even more scared of allowing children to play online, the show left us with little resources as to how to deal with it and how to keep on top of all the ways in which predators can find young victims online. Senator Reynolds said she was not seeking to coach the cross-examination of her former staffer and was "curious" about what had been said in court. Emergency warnings are in place for people in Echuca and other towns along the river, with the Murray expected to peak from Wednesday. The flood damage is expected to take a chunk out of the federal budget and drive up costs for households. He started in Perth, and ran all the way to Sydney raising almost $1.5 million for homeless charity Mobilise. On Monday, Senator Reynolds was accused of trying to interfere in the trial by requesting a copy of Ms Higgins' transcript of evidence and texting suggestions to the defence. He put to Senator Reynolds that if she was motivated enough to attempt to interfere when there was not an election on the horizon, her dominant concern when Ms Higgins first raised the complaint in 2019 would have been the impending election. Relentless rain in western NSW, Victoria and Tasmania is likely to continue to cause flooding in the coming weeks, he said. Ms Higgins has previously told the court she had conversations with Senator Reynolds and later Senator Michaelia Cash about her alleged rape. The court heard Ms Higgins told Senator Reynolds about the alleged rape in the weeks after it happened but she felt pressure not to pursue a police complaint for fear of losing her job. The 2019 federal election was looming and Ms Higgins said emphasis was placed on the impact her allegation could have on the Liberal Party.

“She described how she told him ‘no, stop’, and was crying,” Drumgold said as his closing address to the jury continued. “You may have noticed that Ms Higgins didn’t seem to embellish her account of rape at all,” he said, asking the jury to recall Higgins’ strong reaction when it was put to her the sexual assault never occurred. On the question of whether Lehrmann had sex with Higgins, prosecutor Shane Drumgold, SC, said Higgins described waking to a sharp pain as Lehrmann pinned her leg to the couch in then-minister Linda Reynolds’ office with his knee and propped her other leg up to have sex with her, “adding it was slapping quite hard”.

Reynolds said she was not aware that sending text messages to lawyers working on the trial was inappropriate. Reynolds also sent a test message to the defence lawyer, writing that messages sent between Higgins and Nicole Hamer, who also worked in her office at the time of the alleged rape, would be “revealing”. The court heard that Reynolds had sent a text message to defence lawyer Steven Whybrow, while Higgins was cross-examined, asking for the transcript.
