Night rescues are dangerous and taxing on the residents and the rescuers. Don’t clog up the roads – and stay out of the way of those working hard to save the town. It hit the town from the south-west with a full head of steam. An exhausted and emotional Joe gave me advice for the people of Echuca: don’t be complacent. While Joe never imagined he’d be a water rescuer, I never thought I would be directing traffic. Follow the advice of the authorities. But as we continue to break records, all of us will find ourselves in unexpected jobs. The water is just one risk. Perhaps the bigger risk is complacency or denial. A community meeting at Echuca East on Monday was told to expect the Murray River to peak at 95.9m (AHD) at Echuca Wharf.

If you do not relocate now you may become isolated for a number of days. The Murray River at Echuca Wharf was expected to exceed the major flood level (94.40m AHD) on Monday and reach around 95.00m AHD on Wednesday and Thursday, with major flooding. At 7am Monday, the Murray River was at 94.24m AHD. A community meeting at Echuca East on Monday was told to expect the Murray River to peak at 95.9m (AHD) at Echuca Wharf. The floodwaters on the Goulburn and Campaspe rivers combined with flows down the Murray River are expected to cause major flooding at Echuca Moama in the coming days. As of 8am today, the Murray River was at 94.25m AHD.
