Robbie Coltrane: a totally singular talent from Cracker to Harry ... (The Guardian)

From early comedy in Tutti Frutti to damaged psychologist Fitz, via Hagrid, Falstaff, Blackadder and finally National Treasure's complex, hard-to-hate lead, ...

This was John Byrne’s Boswell & Johnson’s Tour of the Western Isles, with John Sessions playing the florid literary careerist Boswell and Coltrane – intriguingly – playing the great Englishman, and an Englishman with no very natural love of the Scottish at that. Robbie Coltrane was a big man in every sense, a physical one-off, not easily absorbed into the typecast world of movies and drama, understandably reluctant to get too associated with Cracker’s Fitz, but good-humouredly content to become a much-loved figure for legions of young Potter fans. Coltrane presented a different figure: gaunt, frail, walking with a limp – his face a mask of disdain and incomprehension. But it was Harry Potter who put Coltrane in the premier league of pop culture in the 21st century: his image was one of the most recognisable in the merchandising, like Gandalf’s forgotten younger stepbrother. Coltrane was sleek in the role, worldly and cynical, a man whose impassive expression twitches marginally as he hears the click of Bond’s gun pointed to the back of his head, and he murmurs: “Walther PPK, 7.65 millimetre, only three men I know use such a gun. This giant of a man appeared like a new kind of Goliath, a Goliath who was on David’s side …

Scottish actor who graduated from the alternative comedy scene to become a major performer known for taking on complex and difficult roles.

He also indulged his interest in vintage cars in the 1997 series Coltrane’s Planes and Automobiles. Coltrane won the best TV actor Bafta in 1994, 1995 and 1996 for the role. However, Coltrane’s abilities as an actor were increasingly in evidence, and he had considerable success in 1987 with Tutti Frutti, the John Byrne-scripted, Bafta-winning TV series about a washed-up Scottish rock’n’roll band. These placed him firmly in the school of 80s alternative comedy alongside Ben Elton, Emma Thompson and Rik Mayall – an identity reinforced by his regular participation in Comic Strip Presents films including such key entries as Five Go Mad in Dorset, The Beat Generation and The Bullshitters. Born Anthony Robert McMillan in the prosperous Glaswegian suburb of Rutherglen, Coltrane was educated at Glenalmond College, an independent boarding school whose corporal punishment he described as “legalised violence”, before going to the Glasgow School of Art. Coltrane’s comedy skills began to take precedence, as he found success in the early 1980s in TV sketch shows such as Alfresco and A Kick Up the Eighties.
