MotoGP riders are proposing to have a button installed on their bikes to enable a red flag "vote", according to Luca Marini.

So, we are asking to them, also in the safety commission, to have like a button, to push it, and then maybe if 80% of the grid push this button, also in a race for example, they can have a red flag. “They are here [in the paddock] and from here you don’t feel the wind. “It’s difficult also to take this [red flag] decision,” Marini conceded.

I feel good with the bike and look forward to tomorrow to make some more steps forward.” We’re really happy to see Joan back on the bike, and he was so close to the Top 10 today. Fortunately, we had a dry FP2, so we could work on the settings, and at the end of the session we did a decent time attack. Then we will see what is possible on Saturday and Sunday, the feeling on the bike is quite good and we can see that the potential is there. We still have some work to do, but we are at a good point, and I know where we can still improve. Let’s start again from here: the goal for the last free practice sessions is to stay on track as much as possible and make some steps forward also on the pace for the race.” We need to work on the electronics, because the bike moves a lot on corner exit. “A cold and windy day, but it feels amazing to come back to the Island. “A good first day, I had to adapt to the track and the wind that especially in the afternoon was very strong. We have a few things to try tomorrow to improve our feeling, and I felt that we still have a little margin to improve our pace, especially in Sector 1. The wind was definitely a factor with the bike moving around a lot but I think everyone is having the same issue so I’m not worried about it.” “I felt really good today and the bike was also working really, really well today.

So, after all of that, the top five was Marc Marquez, Marini, Martin on that earlier 1:28.616, Aleix Espargaro, and Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) on a 1:28.690. In something of a surprise, Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) misses out on the top 10 by one position and just 0.045 seconds after topping both FP1 and FP2. Aleix Espargaro was just into the provisional Q2 positions when he set a 1:29.305 but he was out again when Quartararo came through with a 1:29.039 and Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) followed him around to clock a 1:28.965. Alex Marquez relegated him to 10th when the Spaniard set a 1:28.765 just after, but 'El Diablo' held on to his berth in Q2. Aleix Espargaro was back up to fourth with a 1:28.825 in the final minute, then Marc Marquez improved to second on a 1:28.652 before being bettered by Luca Marini’s (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) 1:28.592. Despite thoughts on Friday that conditions would be too cool for riders to lap faster in FP3, Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) made an early move from 11th to fifth on combined times with a 1:29.658, then to fourth with a 1:29.534 as he started his first serious time attack and second with a 1:29.510 next time around. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing), Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team), and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) all had to dig deep to get into Q2, while Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) scraped into 10th. Meanwhile, Quartararo had slipped to 13th on the timing screen when he punched out a 1:28.858 to move into ninth. With the chequered flag out, Aleix Espargaro made his spot in Q2 safe when he climbed from eighth to third with a 1:28.639, although Marc Marquez was tailing him around Phillip Island and moved back into P1 with a 1:28.462. (@MotoGP) Marc Marquez has set the fastest lap of a thrilling MotoGP™ FP3 at the Animoca Brands Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Back in Q1, Zarco had been quickest at the end of the first runs on a 1:28.498, with Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) second on a 1:28.647. Marc Marquez sat fifth on a 1:28.313, having been forced into one of his trademark front-end saves exiting 'MG' (Turn 10) on his second flying lap which saw him veer onto the grass. With the second runs on in earnest, Johann Zarco jumped to the top with a 1:28.007 before Martin made it a Prima Pramac Racing one-two when he knocked his teammate off his perch with the first lap of Phillip Island that was quicker than Lorenzo’s 1:27.899 in 2013. With the chequered flag about to come out, Bagnaia moved up to second on a 1:27.953 but was beaten almost immediately by the Honda rider in his slipstream, who set a 1:27.780 which was just 0.013 seconds away from pole! In fact, the top three in the Championship are third, fourth, and fifth, with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) to head up Row 2 and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) set to grid up right next to him.
