He is a $14 chance with Mark Zahra to ride, and is expected to join his stablemate in racing in the first half of the field. Maher trained Jameka to win the 2016 Caulfield Cup and says he is just as confident Smokin' Romans can deliver in the first leg of Melbourne's famous spring cups double. And Maher, who runs one of Australia's biggest stables in tandem with co-trainer David Eustace, agrees with bookmakers in suggesting Smokin' Romans is the one to beat in the $5 million race.
Less than a month ago, the Caulfield Cup wasn't the priority for Ciaron Maher with Smokin' Romans as he was focused on the Melbourne Cup.
He’s ready to run a big race. He improved from his first run into his second run and he didn’t have any luck the other day on top of the ground. “The ease of his last-start win showed how well he’s going. That’s what we’re aiming for him, but it’s been the sharpness of him over 2000m which has surprised me,” Maher said. Since then, Smokin’ Romans, in a surprise to the trainer, has won twice over 2000 metres. The Bart Cummings was suddenly off the table as Maher said running him instead in the Turnbull Stakes as a final lead-in run to the Caulfield Cup was “a no-brainer” as the winner couldn’t gain a penalty for the Melbourne Cup.

“I’ve been around racehorses quite a lot and they’re not all as friendly. “I love watching racing and have done so most of my life.” “Richie was a great racing person, not from the betting point of view, he studied form and he spent a lot of time during his week when he wasn’t working on cricket, studying the racing form,” she said.
Montefilia finished fourth in last year's Caulfield Cup and trainer David Payne says the mare is going better heading into the race this weekend.
"When I came to Australia I said I'd like to win a Melbourne Cup, but I'll take the Caulfield Cup," Payne said. "Now we're not hearing about the Caulfield Cup anymore, we're hearing about The Everest, it doesn't make sense, not to me anyway." "It's famous all over the world, when I was in South Africa, the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup is all you ever heard. "I don't think it's the strongest Caulfield Cup, she ran fourth last year and she's a much stronger mare now and I think it might be a weaker field," Payne said. David Payne would love to win either the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup with Montefilia. Four-time Group 1 winner Montefilia had her colours lowered as favourite last start in Sydney but Payne on Friday attributed the result to the "bog" Randwick surface.

Riding great Brent Thomson remembers winning the 1982 Caulfield Cup on Gurner's Lane before his abundant talents cost him the Melbourne Cup-winning ride on ...
"With the crowds and all of the stuff going on around the day, he was never going to win a Melbourne Cup. "He was never going to win a Melbourne Cup but I couldn't do anything about it." "I had to forego the ride on Gurner's Lane in the Melbourne Cup. "I rode him too well and he won the Moonee Valley Cup and made the Melbourne Cup field. He had earlier cost himself the Melbourne Cup ride on Gurner's Lane by winning the Moonee Valley Cup on the moody import Triumphal March. Racing buffs would know Gurner's Lane went on to become seventh horse to win the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same year 17 days later.
The grey gelding is named in honour of legendary cricketer and commentator Richie Benaud, who was an Australian television favourite before he died in 2015.

Twelve years after winning a wet Caulfield Cup, Gai Waterhouse is confident history can repeat on Saturday with Knights Order.
when it comes to race day he rolls up his sleeves and gets on with the job." "It certainly has come at the perfect time (midweek rain) … "He's proven on a wet track and he's a Group 1 winner on a wet track … "He's got a fabulous chance in the Caulfield Cup, all Adrian and I can say is bring on the Caulfield Cup." A wide Caulfield Cup draw can help as the field jostles for positions in the short run from the barriers to the first turn out of the straight. "He's big and strong, his racing weight is spot on, he loves the wet and the barrier is in his favour.
Training remotely from Sydney as Ed Cummings was required to do last year when Duais was in Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup was not ideal.
“Every time she has stepped out at a mile-and-a-half she has run, the exception being the Caulfield Cup last year and I’m happy to put a pen through that as an aberration,” Cummings said. We’ve known her from day one and knowing what it takes to get her to perform on the big day is critical to the lead-up.” “There was no way she would have been able to perform in the Coongy if was not for those guys and we’re very thankful to them,” Cummings said.
Melbourne form gurus Mick Sharkie, Matt Campbell and Punters' James Lamb are all singing from different hymn sheets when it comes to Saturday's Caulfield ...
"He does tick the boxes though – 2400m plus, he handles wet ground, and I just think he gets the perfect run in transit," Lamb said. "She should run the distance, so I'm with her as a value play," Sharkie said. "The horses that do handle heavy don't scream off the page ‘I'm a Caulfield Cup winner', so I think we might get an upset result in this year's Cup," Sharkie said.

I love the fact he will sit up on speed with a lightweight and with this in mind I believe he will be hard to beat. But if Nature Strip wins I will be the first to say I was wrong and I should never doubt a champion. But if the three speedsters kick up and hold their positions, Nature Strip will have to be as good as we all know he is to overcome a hard run. There are two scenarios I see happening if Eduardo breaks quickly and crosses the three speedsters inside of him, he will bring Nature Strip across and Nature Strip will be hard to beat. Hard to overlook the world’s best sprinter and defending Everest champion Nature Strip. I loved the way he attacked the line in the Might and Power, only beaten 2 ½ lengths to Anamoe.

- 1 – MILEVA – – Wrong race (and pattern against) latest. - 4 – PALAISIPAN – Wide no cover and excellent in Sheraco just missing Nimalee who had it softer. - 9 – ALEGRON – Was only 2nd-up out to 2000m in Kingston Town (run/ won in fast time) and held off Benaud who then was right on the heels of the elites last week in Might And Power at WFA. The trifecta there all ran very well in same Toorak Hcp. Latest was in G1 Turnbull and he meets key rivals like Gold Trip better at the weights for beating them. - 15 – FORTUNATE KISS*** – Badly held-up two-back and clear last 100m (then attacked line). - 6 – SAINT BATHANS – Top return win then ran out luck when about to launch Hillside. - 5 – RENAISSANCE WOMAN – Was not far away in Tea Rose when closer to inside lanes then did make late ground (4th-fastest last 200m) in G1 Flight Stks. - 5 – MURAMASA – Big finish to score at debut then didn’t seem to get around The Valley at all well latest, when balanced-up he ran home nicely (race-fastest last 200m) and winner Tijuana was beaten 1L in G1 Guineas Sat. Elliptical emerged from that race to be beaten inches in G1 Caulfield Guineas. The Rail is out 6 metres the entire track. The 2400m Handicap is regarded as the toughest 2400m race on turf.

Benaud – Made him the horse to follow out of the Might and Power. Love the gear change of blinkers going on and he can serve it up to the odds-on pop which has a negative jockey change of Damian Lane coming off. "He's a star. "He wasn't in the race to make up the numbers and I had a lot of faith in him," Douglas said. Having only his fifth start and coming from the second half of the field under jockey Craig Williams, Giga Kick denied wonder sprinter Nature Strip a second win in the 1,200-metre race. It was Chris Waller's second Caulfield Cup triumph and came only an hour after his charge Nature Strip was upstaged by Giga Kick in The Everest in Sydney. Durston has made the most of a last-minute inclusion to win the Caulfield Cup, while Giga Kick denied wonder sprinter Nature Strip in an unexpected result to claim The Everest at Royal Randwick. - Durston was a late call-up to the Caulfield Cup

“Harry probably had to get on his bike a furlong earlier than he would have really wanted but it worked out from there.” “It really didn’t pan out as we would have liked and he had to do a bit of work,” Forsman said. Sometimes finishing at 10pm and then starting again at 2am. He was found guilty of careless riding and was suspended for 13 meetings. “This guy keeps improving like Lion Tamer did,” he said. He took his Melbourne record to seven winners from 13 starters since he came here August with his small team. Distrustful Award ($15) ran on to finish third, two lengths away. “Durston, he’s a really decent horse. Durston won the Wyong Cup and then the Newcastle Cup before he failed to handle the going in the Metropolitan Handicap on a heavy track. She said once he was in they hoped that the Caulfield track would continue to improve and it did as Racing Victoria stewards upgraded the track from a heavy 8 to a soft 6 during the afternoon. The win in Victoria, however, gave Waller his second Caulfield Cup win and his second in three years as he was successful in 2020 with Verry Elleegant. In winning Durston earned a special spot in Caulfield Cup history as he became the first emergency to have won in the 146 editions of the event.
Punters were excited to be back on track for the Caulfield Cup after being forced to stay away for the past two years.
Durston, who only gained a start after the scratching of Maximal on race morning, was the first Caulfield Cup winner to emerge from the Metropolitan Handicap since Tawqeet in 2006. Their hero had stormed to Caulfield Cup favouritism with his win at Flemington, banking them $600,000, and giving them the chance of a dream result in one of Australia's great races. In the last two years, the helicopter carrying a Channel 7 camera was the only sound to be heard as the Caulfield Cup began, but the old pre-race excitement was back for 2022. But Caulfield Racecourse is a different venue in 2022 as construction work is in progress to deliver the Melbourne Racing Club's vision. Two years of cold and empty Caulfield Cup meetings fell into the past as Caulfield heaved in sections as punters celebrating getting back to the track for the $5m event. Desolation gave way to a celebration well before Durston completed a minor upset in the Caulfield Cup.
Chris Waller continued an amazing few days at Caulfield, claiming the showpiece, the Caulfield Cup (2400m) via Durston, who came with a brilliant finale to.
Great House: Prebble rode him with intent early and had him in the first few but it backfired. Alegron: Just lost sight of the bunny at a crucial stage, back last on the turn, and was never a factor. Crystal Pegasus: He gave a sneaky little sight nearer the inside, but the only way he was going to threaten was if he saved ground, which he did, but it wasn’t the spot to be. Tralee Rose: I thought she would run last given how poor the set up was, but Symon Wilde made a mug of me and most, because she ran a very honest race and you’d think has loads of improvement to come. Inspirational Girl: Was met with good support late in the piece, which somewhat surprised me given she was gate one on a track where the inside was no good. Wide no cover for the trip and he looked to be trucking on the turn, but he couldn’t quite finish it off and weakened late. He has been racing forever it seems like, he’s not quite up to the top level but doesn’t disgrace himself and that was the case again here. Was working to the line late and is crying out of a horse wanting 3200m. Just lacked the change up speed to go with them when they sprinted but he stayed on for a sixth spot, securing his spot in the Melbourne Cup. Knights Order: Just got left flat footed when the sprint went on but he kept finding under pressure and was so game in defeat, finishing third. Presented at the top of the straight and looked the winner, but just couldn’t quite see it out and was nabbed on the peg by Durston. That, a soft ride, smothered and saved for the final 400m ensured that customary turn of foot he has shown came to the fore and what a finale it was to win.
