Manly Sea Eagles part ways with NRL head coach Des Hasler (The Guardian)

The decision ends weeks of speculation about the two-time premiership-winning coach's future in the job.

Hasler persisted with the young Cherry-Evans despite senior members of the playing group clashing with the halfback and when the coach’s future came under a cloud this year, Cherry-Evans admitted he had contemplated leaving the club. Captain Daly Cherry-Evans is famously close with the ousted coach as it was Hasler who handed the halfback his NRL debut in 2011 and developed him into a premiership-winning playmaker by the end of the year. The Sea Eagles lost their last seven games of the 2022 season as the club’s decision to wear a one-off pride jersey divided and thwarted a playing group that had made the top four the campaign before.

'Tumultuous': Hasler sacked, just the start (NEWS.com.au)

Manly's coaching saga has come to an end in bloody fashion with Des Hasler on Thursday being told he's been terminated. 4 min read.

“He has expressed to me his disappointment in the club’s behaviour. He return to the club in 2019, but has been unable to deliver the same success. The extraordinary drama has extended onto the field with ongoing rumours of a rift between the Trbojevic brothers and star playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans. “I applaud the board, they’ve brought it to a head today. If it becomes untenable. “They feel that the club that they love is imploding in front of their eyes,” he said. Despite the complete break down between Hasler and the club’s front office, the club is reported to have offered Hasler an opportunity to accept a succession plan for 2023 in which he would groom the club’s next full time coach. Legend blasts Hasler decision that 'cost his job' (Wide World of Sports)

Sea Eagles great Mark Carroll believes Des Hasler's fate was sealed three months prior to him being sacked.

"He's tried and tested, he is the full package. He claims he had no prior knowledge of the rainbow jersey decision, despite it being planned for months in advance. Why did Dessie have to put his neck on the line? "It all comes down to the pride jersey. "Dessie got up and spoke in front of the media, that wasn't his position to do. "I'm in a little bit of shock, actually. of course it derailed them. That paper trail may make it difficult for Hasler to argue his case in court, although it is still expected that he will fight the Sea Eagles for every dollar. Des Hasler may be done at Manly but Sea Eagles NRL saga is far ... (The Guardian)

Manly have spent a great deal of energy ridding themselves of Hasler, now the challenge now is unifying behind Seibold.

The challenge now is unifying behind a coach who – like Hasler – has his own challenges with club politics and authority. The club, attempting to force Hasler out by undercutting his control, put forward a number of measures they thought would not be accepted, including building a succession plan with a club-appointed successor and a loss of influence over recruitment and retention. It also embarrassed the owners, who not only pushed the jersey to promote inclusivity but were forced into a defence of Hasler and the players who refused to wear the jumper. Likewise, the call by Hasler to lock owner Scott Penn out of the dressing room following the final-round clash with Canterbury left the club with little option but to move on from their coach. This is just two years after his disastrous tenure at Brisbane ended less than two seasons into a five-year deal amid outright political warfare, the club’s first wooden spoon and three of the Broncos’ four biggest losses in their history. Now, after four seasons and a whole lot of drama, he leaves against his will with a year still on his contract.

In the wake of the club's disappointing 11th-place finish in the 2022 NRL season, the Sea Eagles part ways with the two-time premiership coach.

"The board and the club would like to acknowledge Des and his long history with the club as a player and as a coach, enjoying two premierships with the club as a player and taking the club to two more premierships as a coach. As recently as Wednesday night, Hasler was reported to have told the Sea Eagles he was open to having Seibold as an assistant in 2023, with the view to vacating the head coaching role at the end of that season. - Hasler coached the Sea Eagles to premierships in 2008 and 2011

'Sort this joint out': Legends' warning for Seibold after Manly's 'ridiculous' Hasler spat.

Now, do they have to wipe it all clean and start all over again? “Seibold can coach, I still believe that, but does he want to go into a club that’s unstable after what he’s been through? “When you want to win a competition you’ve all got to be running in the same direction.” “Manly is Des Hasler and Des Hasler is Manly. “They should have broken bread, met in the middle and formed a plan for Manly to win a comp, not just fight over power. [Seibold has a shot at redemption... “Both parties should have got together months ago and worked out a contingency plan because the best thing about that is that their a chance of winning the competition. “When you’ve got the heads of your football department and head of your club fighting over who is in control, you are zero chance of winning a competition,” he said. “The losers out of this are the players and the supporters. Braith Anasta, who said he was “still a little shocked” by the news, doesn’t believe the jersey drama is solely to blame, but it “exposed massive fractures in the club between the coach and leadership.” It came after a battle of power between Hasler and the club’s senior management — one that Cooper Cronk called “ridiculous.” Anthony Seibold is expected to take over as Manly’s head coach following the sacking of Des Hasler — and a couple of rugby league legends hope he lays down his terms to the unstable club first.

'Unpredictable and emotional': Turbo to stay at Manly for now after ... (Fox Sports)

Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic will be staying put at the Sea Eagles after meeting with his manager on Friday in the wake of Des Hasler's sacking.

“He has expressed to me his disappointment in the club’s behaviour. Trbojevic is signed until the end of 2026 on $1.1 million a season. [News Corp](https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/nrl-2022-manly-sea-eagles-drama-has-taken-a-toll-on-trbojevic-brothers/news-story/3a713b00c9a24c497085c1ace6107401) then revealed that Trbojevic had called a meeting with his manager, Paul Sutton via Zoom for Friday. If it becomes untenable… “All this has probably changed the narrative in terms of how they felt in the past.” “Jake has called me from England expressing how unhappy he is with the club. Friday’s meeting came after Sutton told News Corp on Wednesday that both Tom and Jake — local Manly juniors and the lifeblood of the Sea Eagles — are “unhappy” and “concerned” that their beloved club is “imploding.” “They feel that the club that they love is imploding in front of their eyes,” Sutton said. “They are really down in the dumps with the place. But it seems the situation was brought under control with Weidler reporting on Friday that Trbojevic is “now focused on his revoery and getting back on the field for Manly.” “Tomorrow is a big day for the club.” That is according to Channel 9’s Danny Weidler, who reported that Trbojevic believes the situation is “too unpredictable and emotional” to make an immediate call on his future.
