The CW's 'The Winchesters' is a 'Supernatural' origin story (ABC News)

Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly are premiering their new TV series “The Winchesters,” with a built-in fan base.

We know where the story’s heading and the gray area that we have is to play with is how we get there and when we get there. RODGER: The darkness is the one thing that I talked to Robbie Thompson about and we’re on the same page from the get. Even Jared (Padalecki) and Misha Collins, who are not even a part of “The Winchesters,” have reached out and have met us in person. They are so dedicated to “Supernatural” because of what it did for them and how it made them feel. Rodger recalls noticing one of the guards repeatedly looking at actor, co-creator and co-executive producer of “The Winchesters,” Jensen Ackles. When Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, stars of the new series “ The Winchesters ” on The CW, attended their first Comic-Con last weekend in New York, they were accompanied by security guards.

So is the show going to show us, ‘Hey, this was John before that happened, and this is how he got to be that person’? [Our writers] will go to the ‘Supernatural’ Wiki and make sure that it doesn’t have an entry, and our goal is to have a creature added to it! Part of my job is to take characters that were either beloved or hated and do nice things or mean things to them. And to understand Mary’s trauma of being born and raised a hunter.” There was a time when the fans of “Supernatural” were among the most active around, and even with the show ending two years ago, there’s still enough of a following for Ackles and co-star Jared Padalecki to stir up support for their new shows (Ackles in “The Boys” and “Big Sky” and Padalecki in “Walker”). One of the many brilliant things that show did was it allowed itself to live in its own space.” How can the main characters be ‘hunting’ together when it was previously established that one knew nothing about the secret life of the other? “I wanted a place to be able to write about what I liked, and ‘Supernatural’ was a big part. It’s going to be interesting because in the show what really drives John to do that was Mary’s death. “One of the things we had as a touchtone was But though most of the advance chatter has been positive, that doesn’t mean “Winchesters” executive producer Robbie Thompson wasn’t nervous. But no new series may be more scrutinized than “The Winchesters,” which premieres Tuesday under the watchful eye of “Supernatural‘s” #SPNFamily fanbase.

The Winchesters Series-Premiere Recap: How I Magically Met Your ... (Vulture)

The 'Supernatural' prequel kicks off with a meet-cute, a second meet-cute, and a few demons (both personal and literal). A recap and review of the first ...

After all the meet-cutes, much of the rest of the pilot is dedicated to explaining who everyone is and what’s going on. • John says that a man he never met handed him Henry’s letter with the key and then “disappeared — like, vanished,” but the interaction happened offscreen. It wasn’t until the writers brought in more hunters, supernatural allies, and foes (and occasionally both) in later seasons that it was able to write its own mythology and find firm footing in the world it created. (I implore anyone feeling nostalgic for the Supernatural pilot to revisit Sam’s five-minute monologue explaining the entire series’ premise to the audience.) This is where The Winchesters does a better job of world-building than its predecessor and where it starts to establish itself as its own show. There’s so much going on in this pilot that it’s hard to keep track of all the bread crumbs. The now-non-possessed Ada directs Mary and her crew to Savannah to continue the search for Samuel, and John follows along, right into the next episode. It takes John about 0.02 seconds to accept that demons exist, which saves everyone a lot of exposition and brings us right into the meat of the complicated plot. [Men of Letters](https://supernatural.fandom.com/wiki/Men_of_Letters), a secret and extinct society of supernatural knowledge-keepers that plays a big role in the original series. That man appears to be hunter Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean’s grandpa, and when we meet his daughter, Mary (Meg Donnelly), on the other side of the credits, he has been missing for a few days. The pilot cold-opens on a graveyard in New Orleans, where a man dressed like Indiana Jones runs into trouble with some kind of monster. There’s no evidence of that yet in The Winchesters, which dives right into the action.

The Winchesters Boss Breaks Down What Secrets Will Be Revealed ... (TV Guide)

The Winchesters showrunner Robbie Thompson explains what the show will look like through the rest of Season 1.

He's particularly dedicated to being respectful of what has come before, and has helped get Dean's voice correct in the voiceovers. There will be a monster of the week. "This show is an opportunity to say, okay, what is the generational trauma she was dealing with? What was the reason she wanted to get out of hunting? This is a supernatural love story, and things don't usually go all that well on the show we know as Supernatural. "But at the same time, when we see the Thompson says that episode will "show all of our cards" in terms of how the writers are making sure that the prequel fits cleanly within the history that the show has established. "We're not necessarily being totally covert about where Dean is in the timeline. "We have to make sure that what we are doing does not upend or undo 15 years of Supernatural. TV Guide got on the phone with showrunner Robbie Thompson to find out what we're in for as the first season continues. From there, John and Mary headed out on the road to chase the clues left behind by Mary's dad, and ended up in a monster fight underneath a cemetery with some assistance from Mary's friends Latika (Nida Khurshid) and Carlos (Jojo Fleites). After reuniting with his mom at his family's garage, John went to an address written on a letter bearing the Men of Letters symbol, accompanied by a key.

The Winchesters Review: an intriguing prequel to Supernatural (The Spool)

A prequel to the CW smash Supernatural focuses on the parents of the monster hunting brothers. ... After fifteen seasons, ever-escalating seasonal arcs, and ...

Though they manage to find a rhythm by the end of the pilot, their dialogue is often stilted, and their chemistry uneven. And John is there to be the flannel-wearing giant with soulful eyes. Aside from John and Mary, there is the beautiful research whiz Latika (Nida Khurshid) and the vibrant Carlos (Jojo Fleites), an openly queer hunter who shows John the ropes of monster killing. Set in the 1970’s, we meet young John Winchester (Drake Rodger), a young Marine newly returned from Vietnam, and carrying all of the baggage you’d expect with that. While Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters really tried to be something different and new (to varying degrees of success), The Winchesters hits every note of your average episode of Supernatural, beat by beat. Bold, too, because who would want to watch a show about two of the most reviled characters in the show’s history?

'The Winchesters' Recap: Season 1, Episode 1 “Pilot” - Nerds and ... (Nerds and Beyond)

The long-awaited premiere of The Winchesters, The CW's Supernatural prequel, has finally arrived! Check out our recap below to see what went down in this ...

A roar sounds and Mary and John find themselves face to face with a loup-garou. Mary reveals to John that Maggie was her 18yo cousin who got killed by a vampire on a hunt and that she wants out of the life. Pouring a salt circle around the demon, Carlos hands John a piece of paper and tells him to read it. Samuel found the information in a Men of Letters space in Savannah. Mary puts Lata on the case of opening the box, despite her wanting to tag along (squeamishness aside), while she and John set off for Texas. It was a letter from his dad, Henry, stating that if he was getting the letter he was gone and to go to the address where they were. Mary picks a lock and finds the schematics for the box she was looking for, saying that she needs to find an Ada Monroe who was working with her dad before he disappeared. The two make a pit stop at the library where they meet Mary’s friend, Latika (Lata), to stock up on knowledge and supplies. Mary parks her car only to have John bring her a coffee. With John out of the way, Mary throws the demon into a vat of holy water while questioning where her father is. Outside a movie theater, John bumps into Mary Campbell and knocks all of her stuff down. After jolting awake, he pulls out a letter with his name on it and the aquarian star logo.

Is The Winchesters on Amazon? (Amazon Adviser)

The Supernatural prequel we've all been waiting for is here. The Winchesters has premiered, but where can you stream the episodes online?

This is a CW series, and the episodes are heading to The CW App the following day. When you buy on Digital, you don’t need subscription services. To see that, you need to know where the episodes are streaming online. Plus, all episodes head to your Amazon Library automatically as soon as they’re available. We’re heading back to 1972 for The Winchesters. After that, we’ll likely see it head to HBO Max, but this is going to depend on the deal Nexstar makes now that it owns the majority of the network.
