32 Thoughts: Setting the tone for a brand new NHL season (Sportsnet.ca)

As the NHL returns, so does 32 Thoughts. This week, Elliotte Friedman welcomes you back with predictions and notes on Jakob Chychrun, Bo Horvat and more.

Those conversations we do have, and we need to have, and once we put it on paper in front of them, it makes a lot of sense.” “A lot of stressful decisions.” He talked about filters, tanks and generators…finding the right people to ask the right questions. Roy closes by saying, “You don’t want to ask a question that’s going to make you sound stupid…so you don’t ask the question. [Mathew Barzal](/hockey/nhl/players/mathew-barzal/878047), [Jordan Kyrou](/hockey/nhl/players/jordan-kyrou/920333) and [Robert Thomas](/hockey/nhl/players/robert-thomas/1057129) — added to the predicted cap increases in 2024-25 — changed the market. We lost a parent when I was 11, and what it taught me was to seize the day. The financial irresponsibility of a young athlete, if not educated, is dangerous.” He said that one of the advantages of the entry-level contract in the NHL is it gives an opportunity to teach. He’s let it be known he’s willing to sign a one-way contract for close to the minimum, and there is interest. “You try to be productive in other ways, but you miss it.” He will be going to Finland as part of the NHL contingent when Colorado and Columbus play Nov. The Avalanche and Lightning are as close to perfect as you get in the NHL, and I do think there’s a drop from them to number three. Calgary, Minnesota and the Rangers could have the most to say about it, especially if the Rangers find a way to tighten up a bit around Igor Shesterkin. I predicted [Jacob Markstrom](/hockey/nhl/players/jacob-markstrom/547717) last year, and didn’t want to do it again. [Leon Draisaitl](/hockey/nhl/players/leon-draisaitl/831068), [Auston Matthews](/hockey/nhl/players/auston-matthews/920210) and [Connor McDavid](/hockey/nhl/players/connor-mcdavid/878032).

Juraj Slafkovsky And The 20 Youngest Rookies On NHL Opening ... (FloHockey)

Prospect analyst Chris Peters takes a look at each of the 20 youngest rookies to make opening night rosters across the NHL.

He’ll likely play down their lineup and that may be where he is for a lot of his career, but he has shown that he can get inside defenses and be a force around the net. But let’s think about the journey Rossi has been on, the work he has had to put in to get himself back from a devastating bout with Covid that left him with myocarditis and cost him a year of hockey. He showed that he can withstand some of the physical rigors of the game and has the hockey sense to know what kind of plays he needs to make and when to make them. Rossi performed exceptionally well in the AHL last season with the Iowa Wild, but he still had to earn his spot on the Wild, which he now has. That said, few defense prospects have the range that Guhle does and that will help him stay competitive and make a good enough impact to be an everyday player. That said, once he puts it together and continues to build some strength, he has a chance to be an elite-level player in the NHL. 8 pick is a big prospect for this franchise and they have to make sure he is still able to develop on his current trend line if he’s not getting the minutes with the big club. He has the size, the mobility and the hockey sense to be an instant impact player. That said, they’ll do what they feel is best for the player’s long-term development and with the way he dominated in junior last year and the early indications he showed in camp, he might prove the best spot for him is with the big club. Slafkovsky wasn’t a lock to make the initial roster and he’s also not a lock to stay with the big club all season. Johnston made the Stars’ opening night roster with a strong preseason and coming off of that sensational breakout year with the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL in 2021-22. The questions Seattle has to ask itself is if playing Wright down their lineup will give him the right minutes and situations to put him in a position to succeed.

2022-23 NHL Season Predictions (PensBurgh)

Looking into the cloudy crystal ball to predict the upcoming hockey season!

As ties into the above, I wouldn’t be totally shocked if a playoff team from last year drops down and a new face pops up, but I’m also not going to be brave enough to call it here. Another team I’m bullish on: The Devils, I guess. —I believe the Penguins are poised for a successful regular season with the pieces they have in place. The top three teams could be very close by the end, but we’ll call it like this. I’m just kinda down on this whole division’s strength relative to the past. They have some talent in place, but just seem to be missing that “it” factor. I put them fourth mainly because I don’t have much faith in the bottom half of the division, but it wouldn’t be shocking to me if this is the team that ends up far off from my prediction. Another team I’m bullish on: In general, the Wild. Of course, being the Leafs, it never works out. Prediction that brings pause (team in doubt): In this division, it was the Jets for me as the team I’m least confident in their placement. Prediction that brings pause (team in doubt): Easily Vegas for this division. The Flames pivoted quickly and added Nazem Kadri, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar and, yeah, that’ll do for this year.

What to expect as the NHL season opens in full, from another level of Cale Makar to a Maple Leafs playoff run to a repeat Stanley Cup Final.

I do believe the Hurricanes are right there as a contender, but I’m calling it now: It’s going to be Lightning-Avalanche again in 2023. Which is how I felt last June covering Lightning-Avalanche, an absolute elite, elite championship matchup that produced a superb level of hockey, especially considering the ailments and injuries both rosters were fighting. [kings](https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/teams/LA/los-angeles-kings/) of winning [NHL](/nhl) offseasons. If the defense can improve in front of goaltender [Anton Forsberg](/nhl/players/2147149/anton-forsberg/), I have no doubt that this is a playoff team. [Auston Matthews](/nhl/players/2245506/auston-matthews/) is the reigning league MVP. Just days later when free agency opened, they landed winger [Claude Giroux](/nhl/players/1282469/claude-giroux/) on a three-year contract to bring some much-needed veteran leadership to the team's locker room. This is the third-oldest team in the NHL and it's simply not nearly as talented of a roster than the one that went to the Stanley Cup Final in each of the past three seasons. I also think that the Eastern Conference is going to be incredibly deep this season and that could easily signal a first round exit for the Lightning. [Tampa Bay Lightning](https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/teams/TB/tampa-bay-lightning/) in yet another first-round exit. [William Nylander](/nhl/players/2147463/william-nylander/) still seems to be underrated. I'm a huge fan of what the Senators did in the offseason. If someone had no memory of recent NHL postseasons, they would look at this roster and wonder why this is a bold prediction. Every team has some degree of hope that this year can be better than the last (well, except for the After that, we get into which players will take home awards and which team will hoist the Stanley Cup.

As The 2022-23 NHL Season Opens, Teams Set New Standards For ... (Forbes)

The longer the NHL salary cap stays stagnant, the more rabbits the league's management teams need to pull out of their hats.

With a number of waiver-exempt young players, the Canucks could have maneuvered their opening-day roster slightly differently, if necessary. When clubs know that they need to dip into LTIR in order to be cap-compliant on opening day, the trick is to set their rosters to be as close as possible to their boosted ACSL. This year, 13 of the league’s 32 teams are starting the season in LTIR. Finally, the Canucks brought up waiver-exempt forward Danila Klimovich ($855,833) from their AHL farm team on Monday. The Vancouver Canucks’ road to a perfect fit was somewhat more complex. And Edmonton Oilers restricted free agent Ryan McLeod accepted a one-year deal at the comparatively round number of $798,000 on Sept. Put simply, it’s advantageous for teams to set their opening-night rosters without using it, because it will allow for greater roster flexibility as the season goes on — particularly when it comes to accruing unused cap space that can be filled near the trade deadline. But Kucherov’s recovery did coincide with the begining of the playoffs, when the salary cap no longer applies. [FAQ](https://www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq) that breaks down the details of the LTIR system. That maximizes the amount of cap space that they’ll have available over the course of the season. To accomplish this, they put star forward Nikita Kucherov and his $9.5 million cap hit on LTIR for the entire 56-game regular season after he underwent hip surgery. That allowed them to operate with an ACSL of nearly
