Chainsaw Man - Series Premiere Review - IGN (IGN)

There is arguably no anime premiere this year that is as eagerly anticipated as Chainsaw Man, the adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga. Every trailer released ...

Rest assured, this is the Chainsaw Man adaptation we were waiting for, and we're just getting started. Likewise, there is some fantastic sound design in the episode, particularly in the revving of the titular Chainsaw Man's chains, a hellish weapon that roars and deafens as it slaughters away at Denji's enemies. If there was any doubt that this show would live up to the violent implication of its title, worry no longer; Chainsaw Man is one gory show. We're talking Attack on Titan level of darkness, and it is not even because of the Devils or the absurdly gory violence, but because of the Dickensian exploration of working-class woes. The premiere introduces us to Denji, a destitute kid working to pay off an absurdly high debt he inherited from his father, and whose only friend in the world is an adorable demon-dog thing named Pochita. This is the Chainsaw Man adaptation we've been waiting for!

The anime will stream from October 11 2022, on Netflix and is expected to run for three months. The first episode introduces us to the concept of Devil Hunters, an organisation whose goal is to rid the world of all those who threaten it, which just happen to be devils right now. Now able to transform parts of his body into chainsaws, a revived Denji uses his new abilities to quickly and brutally dispatch his enemies. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Pochita merges with Denji’s dead body and grants him the powers of a chainsaw devil. Unfortunately, he has outlived his usefulness and is murdered by a devil in contract with the yakuza. It is an action and supernatural anime directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and based on an original manga written by Tatsuki Fujimoto.

Chainsaw Man is more than just an ultra-violent Jujutsu Kaisen (digitalspy.com)

Chainsaw Man releases on Crunchyroll on October 11, here's our review of the anime based on Tatsuki Fujimoto's best-selling manga.

[Attack on Titan](https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a39611286/attack-on-titan-season-4-part-3-release-date/), and some of the studio’s top talent are working on Chainsaw Man. After all, the idea of a ‘superpower’ that reflects isolation is not unique (think about X-Men’s Rogue), and Denji’s literally makes him untouchable. Denji does have a preoccupation with getting laid, which left unchecked might become the kind of insufferable personality trait that turns viewers off. Here’s hoping it can be something that’s subverted through the introduction of interesting female characters. Alongside the hyperviolence of its action scenes, a sense of nihilism also runs through these main narrative beats. In the first episode alone, which sees Denji fight some reanimated Yakuza corpses, there’s more dismemberment and viscera than a Game of Thrones spin-off could dream of.

Furthermore, as evidenced by a subsequent run-in with the yakuza and his henchman, during which the latter humiliates Denji by offering him 100 yen to eat a cigarette (which he does), it doesn’t gain him any respect. Chainsaw Man, it quickly becomes clear, is set in an alternate world in which men and women live side by side with unholy monsters, and Denji has taken it upon himself to help rid the landscape of these creatures for a hefty price; as he remarks, a dead devil usually merits a 300,000 yen sum. The chainsaw may be a familiar sight in the action-horror arena, but the triple-bladed Denji nonetheless makes it feel new, and thrilling, all over again. He lives in a dilapidated shack in the middle of an anonymous Japanese countryside, and his biggest dreams are to one day meet a girl—with whom he could play video games and sleep beside—and to acquire a bit of jam to put on the bread that is the sole food he can afford. Since he has no special powers of his own, Denji performs these duties with the aid of Pochita, a small, round red dog with a chainsaw blade sticking out of his head and a tail (which ends in a triangle) that serves as a veritable pull cord. Denji is a sad sack who’s in such dire need that, as he explains during an intro sequence, he’s succumbed to selling body parts to scrounge up money to pay the gray-haired, trenchcoated elderly yakuza boss whom he owes.

Chainsaw Man: Difference Between Devils, Fiends, and Devil Hybrids (Beebom)

Learn the differences between devils, fiends, and devil hybrids in the new Chainsaw Man anime and manga with detailed descriptions.

Together, they form the Chainsaw Man, which is easily the strongest devil hybrid in the manga series. Denji, our protagonist, is a devil hybrid between himself and the chainsaw devil named Pochita. Even the ability to turn into their devil form only lasts temporarily for the fiends in Chainsaw Man. Instead, she is the control devil who has a human like apperance. Usually, this leads to the elimination of all consciousness of the human part, but at times, shared control of the body is also possible. As the name suggests, hybrids are a result of a merger between humans and devils. The most reliable way to kill hybrid devils is to remove all the devil elements from their bodies. For example, the fox devil embodies the fear of foxes and has a strong jaw and sharp claws. We have compiled this guide to help explain the differences between devils, fiends, and devil hybrids in the Chainsaw Man anime. But if they die in the human world, they are reborn in hell. In the world of Chainsaw Man, devils are supernatural creatures that are born in hell and prey on human fears. Chainsaw Man presents us with one of the most interesting worlds that we have seen in mangas or animes lately.

Chainsaw Man Is a Bloody, Somber Story of a Boy and His Dog (Gizmodo Australia)

Chainsaws have an interesting place in pop culture. Whether it's movies or film, they're one of the handiest tools to have on hand during a zombie.

Because the rest of the show is in 2D, a CG Chainsaw Man that’s also operating on a different framerate from the rest of the 2D world looks out of place, particularly when he’s in minimal motion. After determining that he’s a human/Devil hybrid, Makima gives him the choice to join her in hunting other Devils or die, and he easily accepts. After initial bits of stumbling as he gets used to the extra weight that comes with his new form, Denji starts moving around the battlefield like a bloody force of nature. He’s a good boy, yes, but the show doesn’t go out of its way to make him anything more than a dog that just happens to have a chainsaw for a face. But in the same way that the show is blunt when it comes to its protagonist’s debt, Chainsaw Man doesn’t try too hard in regards to Pochita. It’s a shame, then, that the CG used to bring Chainsaw Man to life (and used earlier throughout the episode) can sometimes feel out of place. Chainsaw Man starts out with a slower, almost melancholic mood rather than the often playful (but no less melancholic) vibes that Jujutsu has successfully operated with over the course of a Aided by a dog-Devil with a chainsaw on his head named Pochita, the two have spent years gradually chipping away at Denji’s debt while the teen continues to live in poverty and long for a better life. Colours are muted for much of the episode’s runtime, as if to mirror Denji’s exhaustion and hopelessness, but they bloom towards the end during two key conversations between him and Pochita. For much of its runtime, the episode has no problem presenting Denji’s struggle as one that’ll forever hold him back from the future he would have if he weren’t busy cleaning up his father’s mess. [recently returned](https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2022/07/the-chainsaw-man-manga-returns-today-and-holy-hell/) manga of the same name by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man is set in a world where monstrous beings called Devils exist on Earth, and Devil Hunters are tasked with eliminating them. [Dead Rising](https://kotaku.com/dead-rising-2-7-000-zombies-and-plenty-of-chainsaws-5229775) have further turned the power tool into punchlines where the joke is absurd display of murders.

Chainsaw Man Episode 1 Review: Dog & Chainsaw (Den of Geek)

Chainsaw Man is the most violent new anime of the season, but rich lore and a confidence in its mysteries makes for a strong start.

It definitely feels as if these violent battles will be what audiences most talk about in Chainsaw Man, but thankfully that’s not all that the show has to offer. It relishes and glorifies grisly moments that the manga otherwise dwells on with a certain passivity. This premiere hammers in the dark nature of this world, but it’s not completely void of levity and silliness. This is hardly a fresh anime trope, but hopefully Chainsaw Man manages to avoid the same pitfalls that held back these at-one-point similar seinen series. This first episode looks gorgeous, but there’s equally impressive sound design, especially when it comes to the vicious massacre in the final act when Denji’s Chainsaw Man form first reveals itself. This excess can function at the series’ surface level, but it’s also led to a trend where stylized expressions of magic, energy, or even violence can become powerful metaphors for the internal problems that consume us all.

Best Chainsaw Man anime fights (Polygon)

We break down the climactic fight scene in the first episode of Chainsaw Man, the new supernatural horror action anime from studio MAPPA based on Tatsuki ...

One of the standout shots of the entire fight, and one which can be briefly glimpsed in the third trailer for the series, is when the Zombie Devil, in a fit of pain-induced desperation, grabs Chainsaw Man with one of his entrail tentacles to fling him across the room and smash into a nearby concert support beam. It’s not until the last third of the episode, after Denji is betrayed by his yakuza employers in exchange for a contract with the so-called Zombie Devil promising power, that we get to see Denji fully cut loose to rip and tear into action. After a momentary pause, Denji wastes no time leaping into action, darting past the Zombie Devil’s defensive line of droning masses and propelling himself forward to pierce the Devil’s skull with his head-mounted chainsaw and arm blades. From start to finish, the climax of Chainsaw Man’s debut episode is an exemplary feat of craftsmanship made possible only through solid production and careful planning that enables these artists and animators to do what they do best — make dope shit. From Hiroyuki Okiura and Mitsuo Iso’s work on the blistering shootout between Motoko Kusanagi and the spider-tank in The exact origin of Devils is unknown, though what is known is that these monsters are manifestations of negative feelings and emotions shared across the collective human subconscious, similar to the phenomenon of “Curses” in Jujutsu Kaisen.
