In the last couple of laps, I just got Andrew to talk a bit more and stayed concentrated. A brand which once carried the tag of “Australia’s driving future” is without one of its own. Garth was just on it this year, and Andrew this year has been epic, now he has won the most ever races in a season as an engineer,” van Gisbergen said. “It’s a team effort and a fan effort, all the support for Holden, it’s special. We didn’t quite have the tool we needed to do the job last year and he gave us the car we needed to get the job done. All you’ve got to do is give Shane the right tool to do the job and he’ll get the job done.”

Sunday’s win in the sunshine after days of rain in Bathurst is van Gisbergen’s 73rd of his career and the 57th for Tander. The win was record setting for van Gisbergen and cements the most dominant season ever in Australian Touring Cars and Supercars history. The New Zealander heroically defended his slim margin ahead of Mostert, who hounded him to the final corner, crossing for his second Bathurst triumph and the fifth for Tander.

SHANE van Gisbergen can today become the first driver in 20 years to mathematically seal a Supercars championship at Bathurst.

Bathurst 1000: Van Gisbergen/Tander take final Holden win (autosport.com)

Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander took a fitting victory in the final Bathurst 1000 that will feature the famous Holden brand.

Supercars' most successful team of the past 15 years is set for a radical shakeup next year when Jamie Whincup retires from driving and takes over the reins at Triple Eight. On the face of it, picking an 18-year-old rookie to replace arguably the greatest Supercars driver of all time is a risky move. His decision to leave Brad Jones Racing was the biggest shock of the Australian Supercars silly season so far.

Van Gisbergen/Tander deliver Holden one last Bathurst win (V8 Sleuth)

SHANE van Gisbergen and Garth Tander have roared to a second Repco Bathurst 1000 triumph in three years, conquering a crazy day at Mount Panorama.

Davison was the sixth addition to the DNF list, following Jack Smith (#4) who crashed at Sulman Park on Lap 138, and the four cars which retired within the first five laps. Fullwood was the first of the top 10 runners to blink, pulling in for his last service on Lap 138 and rejoining in 12th. Besides the likes of Car #88, another recovery effort was that of the #6 Monster Mustang, which had for a time run at the very front until Moffat tangled with Brodie Kostecki at the Cutting and dropped to the rear of the field, albeit undamaged. The race came to life when Will Davison (#17) crashed at Griffins Bend on Lap 142, bringing out the Safety Car and bunching the field up for a grandstand finish. Van Gisbergen/Tander were at the head of the field, with Kostecki/Russell and Mostert/ Coulthard their main threats. Van Gisbergen/Tander (#97) led at the halfway point of the race and converted from there to give Holden one last Bathurst 1000 victory.

Shane van Gisbergen wins Bathurst 1000 after brutal start in ... (The Guardian)

The New Zealander sealed a repeat of his 2020 triumph with Garth Tander on a day when six safety cars were deployed inside 61 laps.

He has room to extend his record with legs at the Gold Coast and Adelaide to come. He now has the most wins in a season with 19, eclipsing the previous record of 18 by Scott McLaughlin. Davison’s late crash meant his teammate and brother Alex’s record of finishing every start at Bathurst came to an end. “It’s a privilege to add to the tally of Holden wins,” van Gisbergen said. He veered across the track and was smashed into by Dale Wood’s Holden, and Matt Campbell’s Ford Mustang joined the pile-up. When racing resumed on lap five, Zane Goddard’s Mustang left the track as he attempted to overtake and lost control re-joining the tarmac.

“If I could get to the front in the first stint, great. I got a couple at the start but I gave a few up at the early stint because it was just out of control. Because I knew full well if I couldn’t get to the front, he was (gestures to van Gisbergen).” It was just getting through that phase, and just having that mindset — I don’t have anything to prove. In the end, Tander’s calm, composed stints provided the perfect co-driver performance. Tander said: “We spoke last night in the car on the way back to the house. Mark Skaife said: “It was pretty mad. The outrageous chaos of the opening 57 laps – with six safety cars – left the paddock stunned. It was crazy stuff. When the race restarted, Zane Goddard, co-driving for James Courtney, lost control at The Chase attempting a desperate overtake. But for many teams, that backfired immediately. Brodie Kostecki was in place by then to assume the lead, but when Jones beached the #96 ZB Commodore at pit entry, a Safety Car was called on Lap 57 and all ahead of #97 came into the lane. Feeney dropped from ninth to 18th when he had an off at The Chase on Lap 48, as van Gisbergen disappeared at the head of the field to a lead approaching five seconds. Will Davison got the wave-by and the #17 Mustang was thus back on the lead lap in 22nd as the race restarted on Lap 45, and officials gave word of no further action on Percat-Blanchard. Waters’ lead was almost two seconds when a Safety Car was called on Lap 31 in response to Alex Davison going off at The Chase, hitting the barriers, and getting stuck in the mud. Whincup was 20th after his early visit to the pits and D’Alberto 21st with a new steering arm after he was also caught in the Lap 1 incident, while Perkins took the wave-by ahead of the Lap 10 restart to get back on the lead lap in 24th. A third Safety Car was called on the next lap in order to recover the #56 Tradie Mustang after Jake Kostecki got himself bogged at The Chase.
