Early crash delivers ominous warning as weather takes a turn ... (Fox Sports)

It's here. 161 laps around Mount Panorama, 1000 kilometres in all. The Great Race – the 2022 Bathurst 1000 – begins at 11.15am AEDT.

The first race of the day delivered an ominous warning of what could be to come for the remainder of the day. It is a great result after the Top 10 Shootout was cancelled. There are wonderful stories all up and down the grid. From the returning veterans lighting up the track, to the stunning crashes, to the wild weather causing absolute chaos and the first cancellation of the Top 10 Shootout in its 44-year history. The weather is set to play a crucial role, as it has all weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a 60 per cent chance of any rain, with just 0 to 2mm likely. But the green flag waved and the action began in earnest – before ending in tragedy. But for James Courtney, this weekend is like no other. The Great Race – the 2022 Bathurst 1000 – begins at 11.15am AEDT. Cameron Waters, twice runner-up, starts from pole (with James Moffat), but is only second-favourite with the bookies behind 2020 winner Shane van Gisbergen. 42-year-old Dontas has been a mainstay of the SuperUtes competition, having stood on the podium in the Bathurst round of the competition in the past. 161 laps around Mount Panorama, 1000 kilometres in all.

Shane van Gisbergen wins Bathurst 1000 after brutal start in ... (The Guardian)

The New Zealander sealed a repeat of his 2020 triumph with Garth Tander on a day when six safety cars were deployed inside 61 laps.

He has room to extend his record with legs at the Gold Coast and Adelaide to come. He now has the most wins in a season with 19, eclipsing the previous record of 18 by Scott McLaughlin. Davison’s late crash meant his teammate and brother Alex’s record of finishing every start at Bathurst came to an end. “It’s a privilege to add to the tally of Holden wins,” van Gisbergen said. He veered across the track and was smashed into by Dale Wood’s Holden, and Matt Campbell’s Ford Mustang joined the pile-up. When racing resumed on lap five, Zane Goddard’s Mustang left the track as he attempted to overtake and lost control re-joining the tarmac.

Bathurst 1000: Van Gisbergen/Tander take final Holden win (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander took a fitting victory in the final Repco Bathurst 1000 that will feature the famous Holden brand.

It's been a long road for the Melbourne native but, after two lengthy battles, he's finally got a full-time drive to look forward to On the face of it, picking an 18-year-old rookie to replace arguably the greatest Supercars driver of all time is a risky move. His decision to leave Brad Jones Racing was the biggest shock of the Australian Supercars silly season so far.

'Ridiculously bad': Inside the chaos of unthinkable Bathurst axing (Fox Sports)

Earlier in the week, a Supercars organiser told me: “It happens every year. We get a forecast for tons of rain then we just get three dry days.” The forecast ...

As they waited for the decision to come, a team member told me – completely seriously – that the Shootout would deliver the slowest qualifying times in half a century. we don’t have the ability to manage that in the time tomorrow.” Holdsworth said: “There would have been cars, 100 per cent, in the fence, so it was the right call … You have to pull everything out of the car, tidy it up, put it all back. Officials debated postponing the Shootout to later in the evening. The driveways to the farms and houses around the Mountain were only channelling the rain straight onto the track. “Yesterday, it was pretty wild in the wet, there were rivers across The Chase and Turn 1,” pole-sitter Cameron Waters said. It inched around the flooded track – surprisingly driving in front of the Safety Car. He walked to the track on Saturday – and even the general carpark was closed. The on-track action on Friday was wetter, and wilder, than the day before. One fan I spoke to said he was bogged four times exiting the general carpark on Friday night (and he wasn’t alone there). Earlier in the week, a Supercars organiser told me: “It happens every year.

Whincup in disbelief after Bathurst great escapes (Speedcafe)

Jamie Whincup could not believe that he got through two major incidents in the opening six laps of the Repco Bathurst 1000 unscathed.

“I had to remind myself of last year’s DNF. “Shane and GT deserve their win. To get to the end of the race and the last Safety Car, I’m three cars behind the leader, so I had to have a reset and realise that I probably wasn’t going to fight with those boys. “I would have been happy to come out of the weekend with three straight cars, but to have all three Triple Eight cars in the top 10 just shows unbelievable depth from a team perspective and I couldn’t be happier.” “We got to the back of the podium, which was great, but we just didn’t quite have the pace in the end. He admitted, however, that it was not the most polished of performances, and that he drove within himself in the latter stages in order to ensure he made the finish after crashing out last year.

It's not what anyone needs and we're only on lap bloody four." Meanwhile, Jaxon Evans rear-ended the Matt Stone Racing No.34 of Jack Le Brocq. Whincup and Perkins simultaneously spun. Holdsworth led when the race restarted on lap 10 ahead of Fabian Coulthard (with Chaz Mostert) and Warren Luff (with Nick Percat). Behind the spinning cars, the rest of the field had to check up. On the muddied grass, the Goddard Mustang slid out of control and speared back onto the track at speed. James Courtney's co-driver Zane Goddard (No.5 Tickford Racing) sought to put a pass on Greg Murphy (No.51 Erebus Motorsport) at The Chase, only to lock up his front tyres and spear off the road. That caused the No.9 Commodore to hit the right front corner of Tony D'Alberto (No.100 Dick Johnson Racing) and bent the steering on his Mustang.
