Matildas get back to winning ways against South Africa in London ... (ABC News)

Australia ends a four-match barren run with a handsome victory over African champions South Africa in London.

Prior to the game they had identified the lack of height in the Banyana Banyana defence and shortly before the break they again converted a Catley corner. However, better goalkeeping and some missed chances kept the score down. From less than a metre out Vine tapped in her debut international goal, the easiest she'll ever score. This time Polkinghorne lost her marker and headed in at the near post. the intensity's been there every session and obviously to top it off with a win is exactly what we wanted." The fourth was a virtuoso goal from Foord, taking a Catley pass and dribbling forward before shooting inside the far post.

WATCH: CommBank Matildas defeat African Champions 4-1 at ... (Matildas)

The CommBank Matildas were simply too good for African Champions South Africa at Kingsmeadow in London. A brace to Cortnee Vine and goals to Clare ...

It was just reward for the South African fans in London, who brightened the atmosphere with their singing throughout the match. She was rewarded for her endeavour with the first goal of the second half. Vine had opportunities to complete her hattrick in the first half but it was instead Clare Polkinghorne who extended the scoring for the Australians. This system โ€“ in any game of risk and reward โ€“ meant that despite 65% possession in the first half, the CommBank Matildas were occasionally vulnerable in transition. Vine managed to backheel the ball into the back of the net with her trailing leg via a deflection, although replays seemed to show that it was her goal to claim. While the CommBank Matildas went into the game as favourites, there were a number of question marks surrounding the match.

Vine ticks off another Matildas landmark (The West Australian)

Rookie Matilda Cortnee Vine has planned out her career in landmarks, but against South Africa she achieved one she had forgotten to schedule.

That's not to say I won't come going overseas any time soon, but it is working for me at the moment. "She is someone I look up to," said Vine. I'm not sure if I put that down - but it is what you want as a striker so I should add it."

Gustavsson's team lost [3-2](/football/report?gameId=602814) to the Danes back in June 2021 -- Gustavsson's third game in charge -- making the match up a great indicator of how the Matildas have progressed under the manager. Her dash, run, and acute finish couldn't have come at a better time, not only in the match but for Foord herself. The #VineTime hashtag got a workout as Vine netted twice to notch up her first two goals in green and gold. Her corners and combination with Arsenal team mate, Foord, down the left contributed to all three goals for Australia in the first half. [The Far Post](http://linktr.ee/thefarpostpod) [Cortnee Vine](https://www.espn.com.au/soccer/player/_/id/300517/cortnee-vine), starting up top in place of Kerr, bagged the first two goals of the game and of her international career. "And then if you add Sam to that as well, we had seven before the camp start and then Sam. Her seven-minute cameo capped off 13 months away from the park in green and gold. He was simply delighted to be able to copy and paste it into the national team. Vine loomed as the odd woman out, not based on talent or the like, but for being the only one not currently in season. An illness kept Kerr away from the starting XI and forced a slightly different look front three for the Matildas. The Matildas were the dominant side all day but could not hold on for a clean sheet.
